What a gorgeous and interesting first episode! The concept seems pretty cool and I can't wait for them to explain all the concepts introduced here.

One Utena creator you didn't mention but whose work you have seen before was Yōji Enokido, one of the key members of Be-Papas, who wrote over half of the scripts and contributed to series composition. Recently, along with Anno, he co-scripted and did series composition on Gundam GQuuuuX. Prior to Utena he'd been the script writer on the yuri-themed episodes of late period Sailor Moon (Uranus/Neptune) and also wrote the scripts for several episodes of Evangelion. In general, the Utena team is a mix of folks who had met each other on Sailor Moon and Evangelion, and it shows... PS: Love the soundtrack on Utena.

Utena struck me as the first TV series to use what I'd call the "rock opera" genre of anime: unlike an idol or music show, music isn't the PLOT, but instead particular musical themes are omnipresent throughout in setting the stage of repeated set-pieces and character themes, to a greater degree than most anime, drawing from the tradition of Takarazuka musical productions but adapting it to anime medium. The same "operetic" style appears in the movie Dirty Pair: Project Eden (parts of which visually prefigure Utena) and in the works of production company Bee Train -- specifically Noir, Madlax and to a lesser extent Hack/Sign ..).
