The turning-into-car scene was so good and funny that it was etched into my mind forever.

The series is and is not anime original. There IS source material....but when making it into a TV anime, a LOT of things were changed and many things are VERY different, most people agree that the anime is very superior. As for the movie, it's also a movie you can rewatch multiple times and you'll see and figure out more stuff each time, it's great.
