Going back to the beginning, it was definitely Ramsey and not a Melissandre conspiracy. The previous episode he wanted to attack Stannis head-on, but his father said he didn't want to send his army out. Ramsey then said "I don't need an army, I only need 20 good men". That opening sequence also just goes to show that at its core, Game of Thrones is really just a show about how bad it sucks to be a horse.

You guys should keep in mind that George RR Martin has a couple of favorite themes he likes to explore in his fantasy stories. First, the difference between destiny and choice - and how choice ALWAYS has consequences (see Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Theon Greyjoy, etc., and now Stannis 😲) - and second, the role of prophecy - and how easily it is misread, or misinterpreted by some characters, and how that impacts their choices (see Melisandre: not to justify burning alive a little kid 😢, but she KNOWS that the REAL fight is between the living and the dead, and believes Stannis is the man that has to lead the armies of light against the darkness, so she will do whatever it takes to get him there)
