Happy Movie Tuesday!
Oh my gosh, I'm soooo happy you all voted for us to watch a Steven Spielberg movie. So many of you recommended we watch this movie, so it seemed like the obvious choice. You also said we would love it and you were totally right! I can't believe how well you all know our movie taste haha ❤️❤️❤️

This was awesome. Thanks! You have actually unknowingly watched alot of Spielberg contributed movies. Saving private Ryan, ET, jaws, poltergeist. Several I recommend if you haven't seen them...Close encounters of the 3rd kind, Goonies (he was exec producer), Jurassic Park, Catch me if you can-one of my favs., Minority Report-fun scifi, Munich and also Lincoln for more serious tones. Also the punching sounds in the IJ movies is always so exaggerated and awesome, like gunshots. My favorite fighting sounds in any movie

Idk if this is a bit of trivia you already knew from being alive in the internet age, but if you look over Indy's right shoulder when he and Sallah are lifting the ark out of its container in the Well of Souls, you can see that one of the hieroglyphs on the column depicts C-3PO and R2-D2. Similarly, there's another hieroglyph near the base of one of the walls that depicts Princess Leia putting the Death Star plans and her distress message to Obi-Wan into R2-D2 while C-3PO watches. Not only did Lucas co-write and co-produce "Raiders of the Lost Ark" with Spielberg, based on a story Lucas had written in 1973, but the two were buddies, so they often put little easter eggs to each other in their movies. In fact, when you get to the next Indiana Jones movie (no spoilers), you'll see a couple more Star Wars references pop up randomly. Oh, and in answer to your question about whether "Raiders" was the first to use the line on the map to show someone traveling, that was actually something that old movies from the 40s and 50s did. When Lucas wrote "Raiders," his goal was to recreate the old serials they would show in theaters before the movie when he was a kid. "Raiders" is basically just a modern day version of those old serials (without, y'know, being broken into episodes ending on cliffhangers) and a lot of those moments are nods to the tropes of those old serials. Anyway, great reaction as always. Looking forward to "Temple of Doom"!

As a kid I never noticed, but, as an adult, it's hilarious to me how crazy Indy's pistol sounds during the bar fight. He's shooting a revolver and it sounds like he's firing off a cannon. But one lesson I learned in my many years as a game designer: Realism isn't always exciting. Sometimes you have to goose it up to give the FEEL of the thing rather than just recreate the thing as it actually is.

Harrison Ford sometimes plays characters who are born skeptics. As Indiana Jones, he said about the Ark: "I don't believe in magic, a lot of superstitious hocus pocus." ...and as Han Solo, he said about The Force: "There's no mystical energy field that controls MY destiny." I've watched "Raiders" many times and I never recognized actor Alfred Molina in the opening scene until years later. Even after seeing him in "Boogie Nights" (1997) and "Spider-Man 2" (2004), it still didn't register until I finally saw his name in "Raiders" credits. I'd have to say that "Minority Report" is my favorite Spielberg film, with screenplay adapted from Philip K. Dick's story by screenwriter Scott Frank, known for his adaptation of "The Queen's Gambit" limited series. "Munich" has historical significance that reverberates to today's world. "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001) was supposed to be a joint film project with the late Stanley Kubrick.

What the character Belloq said about burying a cheap pocket watch for a hundred years and it then becomes pricelsss is true of many contemporary things considered worthless at the time. Beneath San Francisco's financial district are the hulls of abandoned wooden ships, some purposely scuttled during the Gold Rush era when crews and passengers sought their fortunes in the gold mines. These ships are discovered every now and then in landfill beneath streets and buildings during excavation for new construction. https://underscoresf.com/what-lies-beneath-the-ships-buried-under-san-francisco/

If you love the final scene where they store the Ark in the warehouse, the TV series Warehouse 13 seems like the next story developing from that scene -- at least the first season or so. Then, The Librarian TV movies took it in a slightly different direction.

Wade Wallenstein

I LOVE these films! Grew up watching the trilogy on HBO and eventually getting DVD and Blu/Ray sets. Each one is so much fun! I suggest Hook for another Spielberg movie. A Truly heartwarming film.

One of the best things i ever went to was a screening of this film with a live orchestra!! it was beyond epic, we applauded for about ten minutes straight!

Hehe yup, that's Arthur! When he's not being a rascal and trying to steal all the audio cables, he's snuggled up on one of our laps.

MaplenutsReact

Thank you for all of these! We've loved all of his movies so far, so I bet we'd love those ones too!

That makes sense! Also... YOU'RE A GAME DESIGNER!?! That's about the coolest career I can think of!

You can see R2-D2 pretty easily (if you're looking) in the shot where Indy is lifting the ark, but the rest are hard to spot, go by fast, and aren't super clear (bc, obvs, they didn't want their shout-outs to be overly obvious and break immersion). If you want to get a good look at them, tbh, you're better off googling and checking out the screenshots.

Long story short, if you're a Nazi...DON'T PISS OFF THE LORD!
