“Slip into…” 🥁Slipping Jimmy slipping into Saul Goodman! Nice one Jordan 🙌

Francesca Langer

Jimmy lies by telling the truth. His most significant cons always involve weaponizing his real feelings, that's why he's such a successful con artist. Because his tears are real! It's just that he can only express his real feelings when it's in the service of a scheme. I think he started crying for real, and then to protect himself from the emotions he was feeling he internally went "Um, actually I meant to do that!" and pivoted to using his tears as a weapon. What you gradually learn about Jimmy is that he uses all these layers of irony and performance in order to distance himself from emotions that are too painful to face. The scene at the end in the insurance office is like Jimmy’s equivalent of one of Walt’s Bond Villain set pieces, like the train heist or assassinating Gus. It’s a really intricate monologue with several different layers of performance happening simultaneously. It’s very ambiguous when Jimmy is being manipulative and when he is being sincere, not only to the viewer, but I think even to Jimmy himself. In my opinion, Jimmy is a fascinating subversion of the typical prestige anti-hero genre, which usually centers around macho men having crises of machismo. His supervillain powers are empathy and emotional intelligence. He’s incredibly cheerful and optimistic, charming, and funny, and friendly, and nurturing, and sweet, like the exact inverse of Walter White. And yet, in a completely different way from Walt, he is a menace to society.

Holy shit, well said!! You're really good at analyzing the complexities of these characters. It adds so much to the series when you can pick up on these things, so thank you
