Option A would provide more freedom in what animation you want to create.

Carrying Cross

Option a for sure. Would also add tentacles to the top of the inner lid so that it looks fully slimy and fleshy and not weirdly wooden.

That'd be largely down to the animator, honestly. I like to give them a lot of creative freedom.
