100% agree that the Gojo and Kamo clans are petty for immediately moving for the Zenin be removed, but in their defense, there's literally no one left in the Zenin clan. There's only Megumi and Maki left, and they don't care about the clan.

And Mai's technique was explained in Season 1. It's called "Construction", meaning she can create matter out of cursed energy. In season 1 she used a 6 shot revolver and made a 7th bullet with her technique. In this episode, she creates the 2nd sword Maki starts using.

If I remember correctly, Gege said that Ranta (the immobilizing eyes guy) was the nicest person in the Zenin clan, so it is a bit sad what happened to him. At least he died thinking they succeeded I guess
