Re: getting a nat 20 initiative, it's not that it's not good to hit a nat 20, it's that a nat 20 isn't much better than getting a 19 on initiative. Getting a nat 20 in almost any other circumstances is a lot better than rolling any other number. Twice as good when you're talking about doing double damage. Nat 20 initiative rolls don't even guarantee you go first. This is what makes nat 20 initiative rolls feel less satisfying.

Do yall wanna play dress to impress together

alli

Tom Hardy and Ryan Gosling as frontmen in a Flintstones reboot would put butts in seats

Amanda Ruge

Miyazaki loves a Cinematic Haircut, but the wildest one I’ve ever seen was in Laputa Castle in the Sky, where the main girl gets her pigtail braids shot off via pistol from across the room

Proopypants

He will be happy to hear it. He is called Dougal and he is 14 and he is so soft :)

Impish

really excited about this jaded millennial fred pitch

Jake Klein

Anybody else cringe slightly when they kept referencing Nazgûl when talking about what the enemy mounts were like? Like I know it’s small and nitpicky, but the Nazgûl are ring wraiths, not the fell beast that they eventually fly around on…

Ben Delahay

Caldwell can you draw Millennial Fred meeting Boomer Pooh

Kyle Veach

Batista Fred is outstanding

We all know Gazoo, Brian

Short Rest: Mixed Bag EP 1

Holy shit. I’ve got it (I promise it’s worth the read): A gritty Flintstones remake with Tom Hardy as Fred and Ryan Gosling as Barney. Think classic hardman hardy and ‘Drive’ Gosling. - Set in an absurdist caveman parallel of 1950s USA peak industrial unionisation movement. - Fred and Barney are initially elected leaders of their newly unionised state slate mining industry, with a hopeful and bright energy to the scenes, but with vaguely ominous undertones. - Problems arise. Slowly the tone shifts. The hopes and ideals the union is built upon slowly degrade under the ever mounting pressure of industry powerhouses. - Inevitability, the fight becomes dirty and criminal. Eventually Fred and Barney are warped away from their family and community values towards a grim and dark life of unseen threats and back alley violence. Can they hold their union, their families, or even themselves together? Or will they become that which they despised and lose everything they loved on the way? DUNDUNDUUNNN - FLINT/STONE - 🤯🤯🤯

Yas the FF9 reference!! Childhood nostalgia moment

Xacris

laughing at the panic that must have gone through Murph's brain at the end there, thinking "Oh no, how long have we been talking about the Flintstones?"

Adam Scull

I’m so glad cauldwell brought up ff9. That’s all I thought about with the cinematic hair cut

Bellamy Posey

Dougal... as in... shared with the beloved gnome NPC from Trinnyvale?! Outstanding! Auspicious! Hope all are well 🌧✨️😁

JB

Completely different vibe, but Gandolfini would’ve been a great Fred

Jorgus

i honestly really love all of Murphs villains he creates, a lot of unconventional classes. a plus is that all of his female villains are powerful, unflinching, and stoic, while most of the male villains are just pathetic losers.

Nick_Nack_Patty_Whack

I’m glad Caldwell used the shell phone charge. I don’t think think the video game mentality of hoarding items is enjoyable to listen to

Barback of Penance

My rose is the Murph for my new username stolen from his recap. Cheers

Aidan Felker

Everyone i know gets so annoyed when i say “yolk” and pronounce it with the L, but it makes me feel so validated when caldwell says yolked and hits that hard L sound. Because Caldwell could never be wrong🫡

sarah may

i think bryce dallas howard for wilma honestly

Scott

David harbour as Fred.

Canid

Have you tried homebrew something for it? Like you get a free action limited to dodge, hide, search, help (give someone advantage on initiative), or move half your speed with no attacks of opportunity. However Nat 1s would also need flavor like caught off guard (unguard) so either lose your reaction, -2 to AC, or disadvantage on any saving throws, skill checks, or ability checks until your first turn. Similar to pathfinder's flat-footed and shaken conditions.

Canid

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as Fred and Barney. Could bring some fellow wedding crashers actors with them. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Totally Offside

Yeah nat 1s not really being much worse than a low, but not critically low, roll is also something that makes initiative rolls less exciting overall. I would honestly just say a crit success should be an automatic first initiative unless someone else also got a 20 crit failure is an automatic last initiative unless someone also rolled a 1.

Totally Offside

So basically the benefit is that you get to bypass even enemies who have been super statted out for high initiative. Nothing lamer than getting a nat 20 initiative and going third or something because the enemies have been optimized to go high in initiative and the DM rolled well.

Joseph Christodoulou

I would like to vote for the next Mix Bag to be about you all writing the script for your Flinstones movie!

jayden f

definitely a small L for the gang. Going to need a full apology on the next short rest

Nicholas Ventura

Jon Hamm would be a perfect Fred to Ryan Gosling’s Barney

Doctor Ransom

Emily’s spot on with Karen Gillian as Wilma. I legit would be on board for a millennial Flintstones reboot with Ryan as Rubble. Hollywood, do the thing!

Taylor Jackson

John Goodman is absolutely Fred…

Riley Wesson

As someone that also records audio for our sessions, it’s comforting to know that they also rank their clap syncs everytime

Maximus Awesomeness

I can’t wait for the next D&D court. I’ve been truly wronged

Joe K

I haven’t read it but apparently the Flintstones comic from 2017 is amazing. Like unnecessarily so good

Ian Jones

Not sure if I’m hearing this right, but it sounds like Murphy and Sol are unaware that Sol can add his acrobatics bonus to checks to resist being grappled, instead of athletics. If the Bigbys hand tries to grapple him it should at least be a fair fight. Now if they were talking about the Bigby’s shove, then that is a strength check.

Max Herzog

As a lvl 6-barbarian/3-fighter, with the alert feat, I have a +13 to initiative and life couldn't be better. Rolling into the 30s is fantastic and every fight starts on my terms. For how much of a strategist Emily is, I'm surprised she doesn't care more about initiative

Dana Launius

https://www.goldradiouk.com/news/music/billy-joel-piano-man-gay-bar-theory/ thought this was interesting and you might too Emily 👍🏼

Larissa Thiel

Anybody else shocked my Emily taking part in flintstone chat??

Alec Rundle

Can't believe noone suggested buff Zac Efron as Barney

Kidtruck91

That is pretty cool. Fun how different people can read things into lyrics the author didn't originally intend but still very well fit.

eleccross

“I think the time is right for a Flintstones reboot.” Oh they are not aware of the gritty reboot comic books from a couple years ago

Kozai

I’m giving this a re-listen, and can I just say: Caldwell really makes me laugh so often. I have a big thing for cinematic haircuts, and the imagery of 14-year-old Caldwell having to take a lap after seeing the one in FF9 was so funny to me! I also love that Emily pointed out how it’s a trope for a reason, and the flack sometimes received when it’s a woman’s cinematic haircut. Love this crew.

Faith Huisman

Shoutout to Emily for predicting the Flinstones reboot. Unfortunately not the exact cast but the timing was perfection
