Tyler Spencer

I'm never this early, hi anyone who sees this 👋

Jeffrey Steck, Lord of the Fjord

Could be just me, but I didn’t get a push notification or email notification from Patreon for this or the episode drop.

Riley Holmes

No a turtle is a frog with a shell while a tortoise is a toad with a shell

d'ante' breaux

Respectfully if the duck team is too much "go get less" lol

Juliana Reslan

Just finished my biological diversity class, frogs have a three chambered heart which causes their oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood to mix and thus their blood is not that great at distributing nutrients as a four chambered heart (in humans) would be. They also need to absorb oxygen through the skin as tadpoles in order to breathe underwater and keep that feature as frogs on land to absorb even more oxygen. The frog can absorb oxygen through its skin, lungs, and even the skin around its mouth so that the lack of oxygenated blood running their their vascular system isn’t a harm to the amount of oxygen they can obtain. Breathing through the skin also makes them vulnerable to human pollutants, as they absorb harmful chemicals and are thus the easiest indicators of extinction via the mass rates of mortality in frog species due to air pollutants.

Please try baba ganoush Jake! That’ll turn any eggplant hater into a convert 🍆

Declan Konesky

Nut cheese is definitely jizz...

Eve Capelin

As an amphibian biologist, can confirm everything is 100% accurate

Duncan Watson

Fight or flight or gaslight

Olive

There is a super incredibly amazing eggplant curry at the restaurant Taste of Sri Lanka 100/10 would recommend

Wit & Whimsy

I was just reading the Grim Hollow Etharis book and I believe Arboreal Curse originated from there. It was recently published.

Austin Sharp

“I sound like Wheezy” made me actually spit take my coffee at work

Jack Campau

please let Murph being a dry shitty little toad be a thing

Curby Dickens

Tortoises are toads, turtles are frogs

ananarama

I’m a biologist and I love eggplants. There’s dozens of us!

Iain

There was nobody in this record with a foreskin. The week after Smeg-gate we have nut-cheese-a-palooza

Dakota Paulson

Turtles aren’t toads because toads don’t have necks, duh

Katy Howells

Turtles are frogs and tortoises are toads. Period.

Gwen Gilpin

I just learned today that there is something called a spadefoot that's like a toad but not! Not sure where they fall on the wet v. dry debate though.

Courtney F.

Gargling salt water helps with the uncontrollable cough -signed, someone with the same (get well soon!)

naddpod

Thank you!! I am on the mend!! I will def gargle some salt anyway though. - Emily

Courtney F.

Emily, please don't gargle salt, I think that actually might be bad.

sage penelopy

EXACTLY THIS IS WHAT I WAS GONNA SAY!!!! you can’t dislike baba ghanoush 🥺

Tasha

not a biologist but proud owner of a toad and I can confirm that they are indeed very snarky and sharp witted.

Rew Denneno

Is sal still canonically hot?

October Jones

Tortoises guys! Land turtles= toads.

Kelsey K

Biologically, spadefoot toads aren’t true toads but they’re still frogs (as are all toads) More importantly, they’re burrowers so they prefer to be dry and therefore they’re toads

Kelsey K

All the frog facts reminded me how sad it is about Sol’s fungal network. Chytrid fungus strikes again :(

Charles Hyde

As a biologist that loves eggplant, I feel ostracized by this episode

Jessica

Fun fact underneath the shell is actually super wet...cause of the viscera. It is their spine.

Colin Kilzer

so crazy I was absolutely taken out by a head cold for a few days when this came out. mine cleared up quick wishing you all the same

62-bit Hero

This frog toad turtle tortoise conversation had me loudly cracking up in the grocery store - good stuff two crew

BeanCurdHero

absolute funniest thing i have heard in a long time is Emily saying "eyes wide shut." perhaps the last, but technically appropriate for the question, answer.

Marni Russell

Barely halfway through but this is my favorite short rest ever

Marni Russell

How is a turtle NOT a toad with a shell……

Ghost

I'd like to recommend Netflix "Klaus" for a holiday movie this year. It is absolutely phenomenal

An_Armed_Bear

Wouldn't a wet snake be an eel, not a frog?

Jorgus

honestly... we know that there was plans for a mothership in the frigid north... it's not completely impossible that they would've experimented with attempting sol clones that would survive more easily in that environment

Cheyenne

Random question, but does anyone know where to send fan mail/holiday gifts to the two crew?

Proopypants

humble eggplant lover signing in

Cheyenne

That was my hope as well, but since they haven't mentioned it in so long I didn't want to send anything that wouldn't reach them. Thank you!!

Psykodactyle

Jake is actually onto something, bc in Norwegian the name for a turtle/tortoise (we use the same word for both) literally translates to "Shell toad" They really are just dry toads with shells on, and that's science.

Bandanno

"How is a turtle not a toad with a shell?" 😂🤣 This made me actually laugh out loud.

Heather Stock

All this wet or dry talk has me wishing for a Short Rest x Delete This crossover episode! (Hosts: Hank Green and his wife Katherine)

Rachel W

Every time I meet a couple from now on: “So which one of you is the frog and which one is the toad?”

Keaghan Yaxley

I’m the egg plant loving biologist in the comments and I’m fucking furious.

Justin Medrano

I’m gonna need you guys to throttle back on all the frog talk please

snake janders

ALL TOADS ARE FROGS BUT NOT ALL FROGS ARE TOADS. I hate that this sounds like a joke but it is actually 100% true 💀

Proopypants

Moussaka and baba ganoush are great. For generic use I would roughly dice it, salt it, and let it sit for a while. Pat it dry n add it to a nice Mediterranean tomato pasta sauce perhaps. Just goes dead slimy and uninteresting if you cook too long while damp. Tastes delicious if you chargrill or Extremely Roast it though, I think 😎

Nicole Jordan

Question for the crowd I'm slightly confused about the submersible sitaution- what is the current status with it/with Alexandrite changing their plans?

Joe K

Caldwell definitely watched Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. “Sparks!”

ChungleDownBimm

cant believe the "why can a toad be dry" discussion didnt prompt a call back to the dry toads (who were the army's footsoldiers i think?) from the hexbloods arc

Robert de Forest

According to Wikipedia, humans do 1-2% of our respiration through our skin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutaneous_respiration

frogwithhumanhands

I teach about reptiles and amphibians to children and I'm going to start using your guys' facts. Thanks for your contributions to science!

Alyssa

I am too but for some reason I was laughing the whole time

T. Cicc

Calder going to the ice knife tourist area is literally me going on maid of the mist for the first time in my 20s despite living in Niagara Falls my whole life

Aspen

For whatever reason, this episode is not in the Short Rest collection
