This week we had TrueAnon's Brace Belden on the pod to tell us about his experience at the Nova Festival Exhibit in New York. Also we talked about the Adas Torah pogrom in Matt Lieb's old neck of the woods.

My wife and I both come from the psytrance scene. We have attended many festivals and know people who went to the Nova festival, as well as the faces of those who were tragically affected. The main issue with psytrance since its beginnings in Goa, India, is the significant presence of Israelis who started coming in the 1980s. Many Israelis traveled to Goa after their mandatory 3/2 years of military service, seeking peace and reconciliation for what they had experienced, or maybe they felt the need to reconcile with themselves. This is how I saw it from my perspective when I was naïve, thinking that those who came from Israel were mostly against the war/occupation/apartheid and were peace people. I have always appreciated Israeli trance artists such as Astral Projection, Yahel, Infected Mushroom, Skazi, and others. However, the events of October 7th and the horrifying images from Nova left me deeply saddened and disturbed. After these events, I noticed a shift among friends and artists in the community on Facebook. Few non-Israeli DJs/producers began speaking out about Palestine and the attacks they faced with comments and canceling, only to be silenced, likely because many booking agencies and festival organizers have Zionist affiliations. For example, there's a festival in Portugal called ZNA Gathering, which I refer to as the Zionist Nationalist Army Gathering. The lineup primarily features old-school Goa artists, many of whom are Zionists. Astral Projection was announced as the "peace maker" for this festival, I think in the beginning of November, despite the attack on Nova while Palestinians in Gaza were slaughtered. Yet one of the two members, called Avi Nissim, publicly shared on Facebook his attendance at an event called Beach Party in Gaza on October 7, 2024, with the message, "See you there." When I challenged the festival organizers about this, they blocked me. Adding to the complexity, there are videos circulating of IOF TikTok psytrance DJs dropping beats in Gaza after an explosion. There are also videos showing psytrance parties that blocked humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza. Furthermore, videos of Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, and others performing for the Israeli Occupation Forces at military camps have surfaced. Psytrance was once a vibrant movement characterized by the PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) concept, where people from around the world gathered to share their love for the music, psychedelic drugs, and connect over shared ideologies. Now, it has become much like the commercialized shamanic and holistic cacao ceremonies—superficial and insincere. Only few people from the Psytrance Communities see Palestinians as human being, and this is the main problem everywhere. Someone is currently writing an article about the psytrance scene after October 7th. I will share the article once it is published. I respect what you do.
