RTD is a phenomenal writer/creator but I think this stands out because it's personal to him. He said in an interview that you could follow every piece of dialog back in time and find the friend who originally said it. Most of the characters in the show represent several different people from Russel's life, amalgamated into one character each. The exception to that is Jill. Not only is Jill based on a real person, but the person he based her on is actually called Jill in real life. She moved to London to study drama/acting, and moved into an apartment with a bunch of gay guys and called it the "Pink Palace." The real Jill actually plays the character Jill's mother in the show.
