You mentioned how silly the Titans look; the faces of the Titans were often caricatures of drunk people at the bar the author worked at. Working there inspired Titans as a whole, visually. Working there, the author had to deal with lots of drunks. One time he bumped into an American outside. The author is a shorter guy, and had met very few foreigners, and this shitfaced tourist towered over him. It scared him, and he was struck by how vulnerable he was before this glassy-eyed giant he couldn't communicate with, and how creepily serene people are when they're drunk.
