Jake’s Takes and Liv’s Gives makes its triumphant return to the podcast.   This time around, there are no bumpers in this bowling alley as Travis and Julian are nowhere to be found.   Liv and Jake throw strike after strike (or gutter ball after gutter ball if you dislike the ‘take’) in this meandering episode where they discuss everything from the Sonic Movies to petty drama between Canadian pollsters.  Come for the takes about the Ghostbusters video game but stay for the takes about what’s wrong with ankle socks.  Also a more in-depth conversation about Ship Shows.

I remember “ship shows” being mentioned before but I don’t remember the definition, can someone help me out? Seems like they’re talking about like matrix-y “woah,wtf!” Type of shows? But why “ship show”? Also I think I’ve been a patron for a couple of years, I’ve listened to every episode, and I have no idea what any of the hosts look like (except Liv).

The posh accent = proper is both of you inheriting centuries worth of deeply entrenched classism. Posh English is RP, Received Pronounciation, as in received from the crown, the king/queen of England. Children in education were abused across the empire for improper pronounciation. To this day the wrong accent of English can prevent you from getting a job. I often find it funny that americans find british accents 'proper' english. As both british and american english are derived, and have moved away from, the form of english they shared upon the original occupation of the americas. They're both just dialects/isoglosses of English, itself one of many derivations of other Proto-Indo-European isoglosses, there is no true English.

Started talking to him, when I got done wrapping up his fish he handed me his card, and it was Bradley Cooper. His mom had a house near buy and he was there on vacation. It’s a Jakeism from February this year (I think). Basically a mystery box show with an uncanny atmosphere that feels off kilter and claustrophobic- similar to being stuck on a ship. Hence a ‘ship show’. It does not need to take place on an actual ship.

Whats the deal with Sonic advertising in markets where there is none? When I was living in Colorado, albeit years ago, there would be commercials all the time for Sonic, but at the time there wasn't a Sonic within driving distance.

Correct. A synonymous term would be "divine intervention" or maybe "God's hand." It's when a seemingly impossible or nearly-impossible thing (the "Deus") arises out of ("ex") the predictable machine of reality ("Machina"). I went to private school up until I was expelled in 9th grade, and we had Latin for two years. It was the only language class that I LOVED going to. It just *made sense*. It is a very simple language without many ways of describing things. Jake’s idea for a false flag movie reminds me of Capricorn One, which is a 70s movie (starring OJ Simpson) about a group of astronauts who are told they will be part of a fake mission to Mars. The astronauts are not happy that they will be forced to go into hiding for years and things become… complicated. This would make for a great movie review episode tbh.

I’m 30, and when I was younger my mom was very insistent that I wear no-show socks. I found them annoying because I didn’t like my shoelaces (or even the edges of my shoes sometimes) hitting my ankles, and I figured (correctly, I think) that no one actually gave a shit about whether or not you could see someone’s socks. Geriatric GenXer here (1968)! I’m neither MAGA nor BlueAnon, but I definitely see both in my age group. I’m deeply disappointed that my generation went hardest for Trump in 2024. I loved the comments about trying to adopt Canadian accents. I’m currently binging a lot of Canadian comedy (Trailer Park Boys, Shoresy, Letterkenny, rewatching KITH) and I’m definitely catching myself using Canadian slang and accents.
