The #notalllibs thing… idk. I feel like I’ve seen a ton of people pointing at Gaza and basically mocking the left for not supporting Kamala. Like “haha this is what you get for caring about this” Same stuff around immigration. I feel like I see people all the time saying “without immigrants who’s going to pick all our crops, and clean up after us, and make all our food?” As if that’s some kind of clever argument and not just an explicit admission that you’re exploiting vulnerable people to do jobs you don’t want to. It feels like everybody in America knows that secretly all construction and agriculture are totally dependent on being able to exploit illegal immigrants but dems only care when they’re not in power.

Ok I love you guys so much and I think in general you are almost always on point in your skewering of pilled materials… I am thankful of your skeptical/grounded/humorous takes on most conspiracy stuff but I have to say… it sounds like you’ve (Travis especially lol) bought into the official story of 9/11 a bit too much. Would love to see you do an actual deep dive into 9/11 and especially try to give a reasonable explanation for 7 WTC at a minimum cause it’s fucking bizarre to this day. I’d say that, the dozens of other super strange aspects of the story and the information we know about Operation Northwoods and what our gov was willing to do (although was rejected by Kennedy) in Cuba all the way back in 1962… how is it so easy to dismiss that some major fuckery could have been a foot in this insane event that basically changed our country forever, gave the neocons and the national security state everything it could have hoped for and more… all just chaos and coincidence?!? Really? Jake and Julian I’m begging you hahahhahaha I can feel like you both may have your doubts too 😅 just a lilllllll pill. just lilllllll one.

Simple premise but a good episode Julian. It does help to occasionally lick one’s finger and take the temperature on the general conspiracy space. The analysis reminds of me of the pre-Obama era in how a general suspicion of ‘the establishment’ created a large common ground between left and right wing conspiracists. On a final note the separation between r/ Conspiracies and r/ UFO is really interesting. I’ve become so used to ALL the fringe ideas being smooshed together it’s positively strange to see the different subcultures actually separate themselves.

In case you are freaking out about plastic in your brain, Science Vs. did a great breakdown that showed the technique used to measure plastic in the brain involves burning the samples and the signals they were detecting would also be the result of fat (which there is a ton of in the brain). Seems like it's the same technique for all the "organs full of plastic," so we can all chill. Further investigation is required.

I think the History Channel is to blame for a lot of our cultural milieu due to non-stop speculative Nazi content and normalizing conspiracism with Ancient Aliens. I'm the guy who always criticizes the gang's pejorative use of schizophrenia. Just wanted to share an interesting theory about why schizophrenia rates have stayed stable despite evolutionary pressures: cliffs-edge genetic benefits in our advanced brains. Schizophrenia genes do not exist in Neanderthals or other homo species, and the changes in our brains lead to great genetic benefit except for a small, stable fraction of people where their combination leads to disorganized mental processes. Perhaps an over-connectivity and down-regulation of neuronal pruning - which we also see in ADHD and autism. For the majority of people, our advanced brains lead to great survival chances, for the rest of us, we get to enjoy genetic predisposition to mental health struggles. All that being said, the lives of the neurodivergent and people who struggle with mental health would be greatly improved by smashing capitalism. Those marginalized by ableism could be and should be better supported. Universal Basic Needs Guarantee now!

I didn’t see anyone talking about the faucet spyware thing. I’d say that’s actually fairly plausible. Idk how much access android apps have to your mic by default. On iPhone YouTube asks for permission so if Google wanted to spy without permission, they’d need Apple to be in on the conspiracy, but if I flip that one switch then Google has my mic directly, indefinitely. The issue then is recognizing running water. The problem here is different faucets make different noises. I’m not sure how different they are though. I suspect it might be similar to just noise. And if they had access over a long time it would be easy to train an AI to detect your specific faucet by sound pattern, along with the data about when you pickup the phone (never while this particular frequency of noise is happening at this location). Google has been leading AI stuff for like a decade so if anyone could do it… I could actually see an AI algorithm that is designed to maximize ad time figuring this out by itself if it was given all the listening data from millions of phones

Im really not an audio guy. Im sure I misused some terms here. My point is that the sound wave from a faucet isn’t going to be ordered like music or speech. I think it would just show up as a sudden but sustained shift in minimum amplitude. Like 0 - 40 db in .02 seconds and then it just stays there. At least intuitively that’s what I’d expect.

iPhones can detect and notify you of running water for sure. It’s a feature in the Accessibility settings, along with baby crying, cat meowing, other stuff. Think it’s meant to help people with hearing difficulties and it’s been in there for a long time now. Don’t know if that means apps are tapping into that capability for ads or whatever. Probably not. Just saying the tech is there.

I guess the point was two separate transactions are a slightly larger inconvenience, like that you can't add the $10 and $5 Crysta conversion units to a shopping cart and check them both out, you have to do the full process twice. (I don't claim to know if this is actually the case with Crysta, but that's what I took Jake's read on the situation to be). In the ATM analogue, assuming similar conditions, I wouldn't just go ahead and decide to pick 20 on my own but I would probably ask "do you happen to have a 5 on you so that I can make a single withdrawal and exchange a 20?" to check if the more convenient option was workable. I probably wouldn't pick the 20 in the situation Jake describes though, but that's 100% because I have a stick up my ass about dark pattern design so my stubbornness to work against it kicks in, lol.

Asking if phone mics could detect water running is a totally fair question. Not only have we had that technology for many years now (Google shipped offline song identification for Pixel phones in 2017), but hooooo buddy does it get worse. We can reconstruct the sound in a room by filming and processing objects in the room, like plastic bags. I had to sit down when I learned all this. Benn Jordan has a great video on it.
