On “everyone knew about Jimmy Saville”, I’ve only recently realized that a character in Irvine Welsh’s novella Lorraine Goes to Livingstone, which I read when published in 1996 in the collection Ecstasy, was clearly based on Saville. Though Welsh wisely decided that black comedy could extend to necrophilia which the character delights in but not child abuse which isn’t mentioned.

The nonsense about the Queen and Prince Philip murdering children at the Kamloops residential school is a product of Canadian grifter and defrocked minister Kevin Annett, who has been spreading this and similar conspiracy theories since the early 1990s. Make no mistake: the residential schools were a tool of cultural genocide, and about 6,000 children died in them, mostly of preventable illnesses. Annett’s attempts to capitalize on this shameful tragedy led to his being rejected by First Nations in Canada, who didn’t appreciate him digging up pre-planted chicken bones and pretending they belonged to murdered children.

I should add that it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that children did run away from the Kamloops school. They were terrible places where children were punished for things like speaking their own language.

why am i paying for premium service to wait over a week to get any episode during one of the biggest news weeks in a year . . . especially when there was an arrest of two gun-toting q-anon hat wearing guys at one of the vote counting locations in Philadelphia . . . great time to go off the grid
