EDIT I wrote this before I got to the "false flag" part. I don't doubt my original opinion at all now. This guy is a psychopath. /EDIT I feel bad even bringing this up... But was anyone else creeped out by how he described the shooting? There's almost no emotion until he gets to the part about him returning fire, and then he gets excited. He tells the story exactly like when someone embellishes and twists a story to make themselves sound like a complete badass? "I shot him a... eleven times (he got so excited about telling this part, and it sounds like an on the spot rewrite, like he decided to increase the number of times he fired to sound cooler, because it really sounds like he was going to say 'eight', caught himself, and added three more shots). I shot AT him eleven times... Now, did I hit him eleven times? (He sounds just like a bullshitter, like Rumsfeld, trying to cut off objections by addressing made-up ones so they can avoid the real ones) Probably not...but I'm pretty positive I did hit him.. (because I'm just that good)" I'm a proud gun owning socialist, and I was getting super creeped out when he started describing the details of the guns. The fact that he calls out Sig Sauer like he's plugging a sponsor made me nauseous, "...another Sig 9mm..." It's effing gross. Listen to how he tells the story. He makes sure to use TV police slang so that he sounds more badass - "I was able to retrieve another Sig 9mm... Then I engaged him again..." It's the verbal equivalent of wearing your sunglasses backwards on your neck. He gets downright giddy when he gets to this part. It's disgusting. I'm shocked he didn't somehow manage to work in a Punisher reference. Listen to when he starts with "...I dialed 911.." "I engaged him again, and we went into a fire at the same time. He was firing at me with an AR-15, and those bullets... were not hitting me... The same thing that was true when I engaged him the first time... In fact, all of that property has been taken out of my house and destroyed because there's so many gunshot wounds in it.." That's not how you tell a story about your daughter's murder. You certainly don't follow it up expressing the hope that you can get into a shootout with the killer again, in the hopes of making up for being made a fool the first time. Lastly, he can't even bring himself to sound remotely emotional when he's describing the killer as "a low down, dirty, dog". I'm shocked he didn't let loose and call the guy a "numbskull" or even a "meanie". It sounds like he's trying really hard to sell the line, but there's zero emotion behind it. I hate that I'm thinking this, and I'm checking to see how off base I am. But I don't think he cared about his daughter's murder nearly as much as the sympathy and cache it gives him.

I was also struck by the way he repeatedly name dropped the sig. The sympathetic part of me wants to remember that grief can make people act strangely. But I agree that it seems unlikely he wouldn't also use the opportunity to self aggrandize.

I feel like the charitable reading is that this is the result of disassociation. Aclinical recitation of what sounds like a scene from a movie as a way to distance himself from the reality of his loss.

Its so indulgent of actually being in a shootout while emotionally and realistically refusing to acknowledge that NONE OF IT MATTERED. The guy still murdered his daughter, he still got shot, and he didn’t even stop the guy in his own home! This man dedicated his life and livelihood in being a paranoid gun nut and it amounted to nothing but he somehow still envisions himself as a rogue warrior even though he and his worldview objectively failed.

This is obviously a very sad story, but I just wanted to drop in and say that Julian reads the word "Kentucky" like a character in a James Fenimore Cooper novel. I was expecting Daniel Day Lewis to show up at any minute.

I live in Central Kentucky and followed this story as it was happening in the Herald-Leader. It was wild listening to the whole episode knowing how it ended. Didn't know his Q ties, so thanks for picking up this story. Makes a lot more sense now. Dude also tried to blame the H-L for the invasion by publishing stories on his house when it went up for sale.

The bunker sounds exactly like the Superlab in Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul. They show the construction in Season 4 of Better Call Saul and it's quite the ordeal. Maybe the creative team took inspiration from this story.
