If there’s one thing that beautiful British Columbia needs, it’s more cults.  This week, the gang explores the volatile life of Edward Arthur Wilson, better known as “Brother XII.”  Wilson was an English mystic who wasted absolutely no time building a spiritual compound south of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.  Prepare yourself for Egyptian gods, hidden treasure, and heart problems as Brad Abrahams gently ferries us off to the De Coursey islands in search of gold.

Wonder if they fellated this guy as badly as they did Chudsley. Just remember the Barbie Movie got substantially more shit than Chudsley got.

JerJin

Let it go man, just cancel the patreon like you said you would if you’re gonna keep commenting this without actually listening to the episodes

There was a great episode of ‘Expedition Unknown’ on Discovery that explored this cult and the lost treasure!

What was that about the snake orgy dens in Manitoba?

Minor quibble: the Irvingites weren’t a sect of Catholics. They were founded by a Scottish minister who was excommunicated from the Scottish Presbyterian Church. He called the new church he founded the Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, but that doesn’t mean it was Catholic in the sense of Roman Catholic – it was a branch off of Presbyterianism. In the Nicene Creed – a statement of faith which predates the split of Christianity into Western and Eastern halves, and long precedes the Protestant Reformation – the Christian Church is described as the “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” These are all basically adjectives meaning that the Church is (in theory) unified, connected to God, universal (the original meaning of “catholic”), and descended from the community of the Apostles. That’s what he’s saying, “we’re the Holy Catholic Apostolic Church” in all of those senses. Most Christian churches claim those marks of the Church, I think, though I guess based on the name they had given up on the “One” part by that point.

I’m glad I was on Jake’s wavelength because because when he started talking about how there were three dates I was like “hey, I’ve seen this movie!”

Man... weird cults really are like 12 bar blues. Same chords, endless variation.

Brad Plumb

Serious Beck vibes on that Auto Q. Though Beck would have written better lyrics.

Daniel Greene

I really need to see that Rock Opera and 1969 film!

Adam Swinson

John Swan

We love Brad episodes, folks.

Keith Crosley

Makes me want to sing the St. Germaine song. Good stuff… it’s always fun to learn about historic kooks who are new to me.

Stephanie

Love a Brad episode!

Luke

Can someone please ask Brad if he coined the phrase “Paradise promised, Hell delivered”? Cos it’s amazing.

Eriq One

It's funny that on the same island is the supposed witch capital of Canada with not so hush hush talk about the history of satanic cults and all the fun paranormal stuff. Never heard of brother 12, crazy stuff

Adam Hustler

@21:30-21:40 ... So, there is actually a strain of Christian conspiracism that sees the Catholic church as taken over by Jewish people who were forced to convert (but just pretended) by said church. It's the unspoken reason for why certain Protestant sects see the Catholic church as part of the beast system.

Elle BelAnge

If anyone is curious the Canadian song writer/singer is John Gogo and the song is called The Infamous Devil of De Courcy. Thanks for the introduction Brad, I needed more tunes for my cult playlist 🖤

Miss Behavior

Always love a Brad episode!

Alex

Would it have killed you to actually credit the John Gogo song that you use in this episode?

Sonny Day

Don’t Brother Open inside 🤣
