expectations are a double-edged sword. they can serve to motivate us, give us goals, a path or they can be a weight that keeps us from moving at all. i really connect with subaru. i was a young, gifted kid, my parents had really high expectations of me, reality kicked my ass and i had several years of anxiety/panic disorder. and much like subaru, it wasn't that everyone crushed me with their expectations - it was that i had internalized it all and created an identity around that so when i could no longer keep up, started to experience Failure and rejection, i crumbled. i wasn't who i thought i was anymore. i have a wonderful mother that loved me through it all. but she is not the best at communicating. (my father and stepfather were always a bit distant, so mom was pretty much my one touchstone) i got my psych degree and that really helped me organize and understand my thoughts. it was during that time that i set my own goals and worked my ass off to achieve them and built myself back up. several years later and I am the mother now. i clearly set realistic expectations w my kids. i tell them- it's my job to love you and teach you how to be grown-ups and when you're ready to start your own life, i'll still be here whenever you need me.
