CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER

Reuben Filimaua

Roswaal definitely feels like a twisted mirror to Subaru. Both have similar stories regarding how they met their white hair waifus lol: the girl saved their life and as such they devoted their life to said girl - putting her on a petestal.. not viewing her as a person but as a savior beyond their understanding. Looking at the Roswaal, Beatrice, Echidna dynamic.. Roswaal definitely had a Subaru vibe. Its no wonder Beatrice liked him and held a similar bratty energy towards him. Especially in his "fight" against Hector, Roswaal clearly was the weakest there getting his ass kicked as a distraction for Echidna. Another similarity to Subaru's self sacrifical nature. That event in time of Roswaal getting his ass kicked from Hector and losing Echidna definitely left a scar on his psyche. His weakness was what led to him not being strong enough to save her. I think Roswaal's way of thinking is that in order to be strong you must accept your weakness as a human and that there are sacrifices that have to be made. You can't save everyone, so focus everything on your one goal and nothing else. Throw away your own life and the lives of everyone around you for your desire. That's exactly what he was trying to teach Subaru with his Return by Death. Throw away everything for the sake of your one desire - Emilia. Because no one is strong enough to get everything they desire unless they use whatever it takes (their power, their own self, the feelings of other people).. everything they have on that one desire. So I think what triggered Roswaal at the end was Garfiel's ability to change after accepting the trauma of his past, and Subaru's declaration that he will save everyone. Two things that Roswaal has not reconciled with himself. They don't coincide with his beliefs that he has held for 400 years.
