There is something uniquely compelling about the structure of this show. It makes a promise, but doesn’t feel the need to fulfill it quickly. Not many anime will spend this long time focusing on a protagonist refusing to be the protagonist. We barely get any hints that he might start to care until he has already been sent to jail. He is of the same archetype as Thorfinn (Vinland), Eris (mushoku), or Zuko (avatar), refusing to be tamed by anyone and lashing out physically against those who try, but Joe masks his redeeming qualities much more than those characters, as he actively tries to sabotage any attempts to help him. Joe doesn’t trust anyone but himself, and that’s understandable given that his parents abandoned him at such a young age, but the degree of stubbornness feels more real somehow. It’s also unique to see our protagonist falling so far into the pit without getting any sign of them trying to climb out of it yet.
