This episode, and the whole this season featuring Hantengu and Shinazugawa Genya's story, has a strong Buddhist motif in it. Hantengu (半天狗). Tengu (天狗) is a type of yōkai that lives in deep mountains and valleys all over Japan. As the most famous Japanese yōkai, characterized by a long cylindrical nose, a red face, wings, and a geda shoes, Tengu literally appears in all kinds of Japanese anime. (The mask worn by Sakonji Urokodaki is also the Tengu's Men.) Tengu are deeply related to Buddhism in many ways, and they are heavily influenced by Shugendo, so they got ascetic-like vibe rather than a typical monsterous yōkai. In various literatures, it is often described as anti-Buddhist, but also commonly decribed as round/dynamic character that eventually embrace to Buddhism. On the surface, the Han半 in Hantengu (半天狗) means half in English. However, the character 半 is a combination of 八 (eight) and 牛 (cow), and 八 originally mean 'to divide in two', which was combined with the word 牛, representing dissecting a cow into two pieces. As a result, 半 actually becomes the word half with the nuance of 'devide', 'to be divided'. Thus, a Hantengu(of Halftengu) becomes, a 'Tengu that meant to be divided'. So Why do they express different emotions? Why they use such weapon or ability? What have they got to do with Genya? I'm sorry if my English is difficult to understand, my English is not very good, but I will try best to explain more deeply hidden Buddhist motifs in the next episode.
