I was expecting Fire Punch next in the Fujimoto list but i ain't complaining.

It was a decision by the director of season 1 to frame it as more of a movie than an anime. I remember it got some flak when the season was airing. If I remember right, a lot of the Western audience liked it, but the JP audience didn't seem to like it.
