THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

This Is Spinal Tap (also known as This Is Spın̈al Tap: A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi[a]) is a 1984 American mockumentary comedy film co-written and directed by Rob Reiner in his feature directorial debut. The film's starring trio, who also co-wrote the film, are Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. Guest, McKean and Shearer play members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, which is characterized as "one of England's loudest bands". Reiner plays Martin "Marty" Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour. The film satirizes the behavior and musical pretensions of rock bands and the perceived hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries such as The Song Remains the Same (1976) and The Last Waltz (1978), and follows the similar All You Need Is Cash (1978) by the Rutles.[5] Most of its dialogue was improvised and dozens of hours were filmed. This movie invented the mockumentary genre. Christopher Guest (who played Nigel) went on to make three more films inthis style: Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind. It also probably inspired the Office, which in turn inspired other shows like Parks & Recreation and Veep. It's filled with minor famous people in many of the roles; one of my favorites is Paul Shaffer as the PR guy, who is best known for being David Letterman's band leader for decades. It's great that Coby recognized Michael McKean from Laverne & Shirley. Harry Shearer (the bass player) does about 50% of all supporting character voices in the Simpsons. One could analyze and discuss every minute of this movie. It's that packed full of references and details. And of course, Christopher Guest is married to Jamie Lee Curtis, so nicely done, Chris!

Actually it didn't. The Rutles predate Spinal Tap, and of course Woody Allen's first movie, "Take The Money And Run" is also a "mockumentary". So is "Zelig" (1983).

This came out my freshman year of highschool - but I don't think I saw it until about 2005. Ridiculous in the best possible of ways.

Also - just wanted to say I saw your instagram post, and offer sincere condolances for your loss. When we lose heroes, especially ones in our family, or even those we just consider as family, it's very hard.

Your impression of Fran Dresher saying "Dog Collar" and liking Janine's Australian Nightmare clothes are hilarious.......
