Superman: The Movie (also marketed as Superman) is a 1978 superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the eponymous character, played by Christopher Reeve. It is the first of four installments in the Superman film series starring Reeve as Superman. The film was directed by Richard Donner based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton. The film features an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman). I just heard a little about the new Superman movie. There’s something about that movie that I think you’re gonna especially like. I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t say what it is. When you see it you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. After you see it please let me know if I was right. 😁

When this came out, the producers of "Superman" and "Superman II" (not Donner) were involved in a lawsuit over their production of "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and "The Four Musketeers" (1974). They had filmed them as one long movie, then in post-production told the actors that it was too long and split it into too parts, but insisted that they would only pay the SAG union rate for a single film. Their big mistake was that they had cast Charlton Heston as Cardinal Richelieu. He was the President of SAG at the time and brought the full weight of SAG's bankroll to fund a lawsuit, and got the other unions (writers, etc.) to join. The suit was still in court in 1978 when the producers did the same thing for Super 1 & 2: filming it as one movie, then telling the actors that it was too long and they were going to split it into 2 parts, but only pay the single movie rate. When this was presented to the judge, he called it a "Pattern and Practice" and summarily ruled in favor of SAG, so they had to pay everyone for 2 movies, plus pay for SAG's legal team, plus pay for 2 "Superman" movies.
