Apple's App Store Changes (Patreon)

So, you've read the pictures (hopefully) and Apple has decided that it deserves 30% of any Pledge made to my Patreon through their App Store. Meaning that for Patrons that pledge to me through said App, the price of your pledge is going to be jacked up to cover Apple's selfish fees.

Also, going forward, they're forcibly switching every Patreon user to subscription billing, so budgeting is definitely gonna be harder to do for me going forward as the money comes in bit by bit instead of just on the first of the month. Lovely...

I highly encourage everyone to NOT use the Apple App Store for Patreon if you have ANY other alternative.

Sorry, to bring bad (or just annoying) news, but every one of my Patrons should be made aware of this before it goes into effect.

Redundant to ask I know but I still kind of feel like I should. If your a Patron yourself but used the Patreon website itself to pay for memberships then I'm assuming your fine right?

Yeah, the subscription thing is a bit annoying. I switched over to it when they first gave the option cause at that point I actually believed the little messages about how cool the new features were was always helpful.

If you're on iPhone use the browser to manage your subscriptions or a computer if you have it available it sucks but it's how Apple wants to play

Yeah, Google doesn't appear to be charging extra fees for being on Patreon. Apple is getting WAY too greedy nowadays.

It's not just on Apple, Patreon's been looking for an excuse to push rolling subscriptions for a while now. Either way, I do everything I can through a web browser, so no impact to me, but thanks for spreading the word.

I had understood the changes to be affecting google play so I uninstalled the app just to be safe. I may no redownload it as it will keep me off the phone a little more, lol. Will still be here on my computer though.

I use the App on IPhone, but I pay my followed creators through a personal card. Will that affect me?

good thing I mostly use the web for Patreon and for when I want to access it at work I use the app on my S24 lol

The problem is not how it will affect us, but how it will affect the creators. As long as you join as a member via the app the creators will earn less. This is because Apple will start taking a 30% cut.

As far as I'm aware from what Patreon has said in these pictures I shared, it's only Apple's App Store upcharging right now. Not sure if Google will follow suit in the future or not.

your pricing is reasonable and you update frequently unlike one author who I made the mistake of following as I really liked his stories. I went with the 10 dollar option to read a story and he only updates once a month at best lol

Ok. So the up charge would still be added even if it’s through a personal bank card. That sucks. Is this an as if the coming November issue? Like my current memberships are still by the month, first or last Friday of the month?

If you go through Apple's App store, you'll the upcharge. If you pay through Patreon's website instead of the App, then you shouldn't get the upcharge. But as of November, Apple App users will be hit with a 30% up charge by Apple. What will change by the end of 2025 is that all NEW members of a Patreon Page (not current Patrons like yourself) will start being charged on their subscription date, which is the day of the month that you initially joined the group. So, if you become a Patron of someone that has subscription billing, then you'll be charged on the same day every month. So, if you first pledged on, say, the 30th of the month, then you'll be charge on the 30th of every month unless you leave the group and then rejoin on a different day of the month, then it'll start charging you on the new date that you joined each month. That's how I understand subscription billing at least.

The iOS Patreon App upcharge will apply to ALL of your pledges on Patreon, so for each one you have, however much it is, it will increase by 30% starting in November.

Dang. So my $1 is no $1.33? Not leaving, just gonna have to look through and try to maybe lower my tiers on others. Personally I feel there shouldn’t be a fee for changing to a lower tier, and if upgrading after paying for the month, you should only pay the difference.

You do only pay the difference when upgrading Tiers if you already paid, but I don't know if Apple will be taking a 30% cut of that or not too. Dropping down a Tier is always free if you've already paid the higher Tier that month.
