Chapter 24 – Fortuneteller Baba’s Challenge

Early in the morning at Kame House was usually filled with training for Caulifla and Kale. Today, however, it was greeted with the familiar ‘Bomf’ of a Capsule releasing its contents.

“You still have this plane?” Launch asked, seeing the four-seater plane that Bulma had thrown to Roshi after the end of the 21st Tenka’ichi Budokai.

“Bulma told me to keep it when I tried to return it, so I’ve held onto it.” Roshi said with a shrug as he climbed into the pilot’s seat. “Pile in, gang! We’ll be flying for a while to get to Baba’s place!”

Once everyone was in the plane, Caulifla had a smug grin at getting to sit in Goku’s lap, the plane took off and ascended into the sky. Roshi turned the plane in a wide bank and then increased the speed, knowing that if they flew southeast, they’d get to his older sister’s place faster than flying to the northwest.

About an hour into the flight and Launch opened the backpack that she’d brought to reveal a Capsule filled with pre-packaged food for breakfast. Roshi ate with one had while flying the plane, while the three Saiyans chowed down. Launch snorted out a laugh at how fast the large pile of food was disappearing, even as she ate her own portion.

A few hours later and the plane was flying over a large desert, while Launch and Roshi tried to figure out where exactly they needed to land.

“Launch, about how much further?” Roshi asked, scanning the desert below with his eyes.

“It should be somewhere around here…” Launch said, looking at the map and then out the front of the plane to try and figure out exactly where they were.

Roshi scanned the desert, seeing nothing but sand, rocks, and dunes from horizon to horizon. “Well… ‘Somewhere around here’ is nothing but desert.”

Launch glanced over at Roshi with an annoyed glare. “I’m just following the map and the spot YOU marked on it.”

A glimmer on the horizon caught the eyes of the three Saiyans.

“Is that a lake?” Kale asked, leaning forward in her seat.

“Looks like it.” Caulifla said as the plane got closer.

Goku peered over Caulifla’s shoulder. “I think those are buildings on top of the lake. How’re they floating like that?”

Roshi noticed what his three students had seen and let out a small laugh. “That’s it! That’s my sister’s place!” He took the plane low and slowed its speed, sending the loose sand scattering through the air as the plane hovered to a soft landing. As everyone got out of the plane and Roshi capsulized it again, placing the Capsule in a small white case which he put in his pocket, and the group noticed that there was a short line in front of the sprawling ‘palace’ that sat on the oasis lake.

“It’s hot out here.” Goku said, feeling the heat of the desert sun.

“There’s already other people here.” Kale mentioned of the short line at the front of the palace.

As the group approached the short line, they noticed that it was all burly men, a burly gorilla man and an equally muscled lion man. All five of the group ahead of them glared at the newcomers, but that didn’t bother Goku in the slightest as he approached the five men.

“Excuse me.” Goku spoke to the five men, only to be cut off.

A ghost wearing a conical straw hat floated over to the group with a smile. The strange creature might have been a spirit, though it seemed a bit too solid for that. “Get in line, get in line.”

Goku, never one to be fazed by much, looked at the floating ghost. “Is this the Ball-Seeing Crone’s house?” He asked, conflating the woman’s title with what he wanted her to find for him.

“That’s ‘All-Seeing Crone’, boy!” The ghost corrected Goku with a flat look before taking in the group as a whole. “Are the five of you together?”

“Yeah, we are. Why?” Caulifla answered easily, wanting to get out of the heat.

The ghost chuckled a bit. “Heh heh heh… Indeed? I see…” The ghost turned and started floating away. “Well then… I shall call you when your turn arrives…”

“Weirdo.” Launch scoffed as the ghost floated back into the palace.

“Why does everyone in line look so tough?” Kale asked, noticing that the group in font of them were all large, muscled men, and at least one of them was wearing traditional martial arts clothing. It seemed odd that the short line was filled with nothing but people that would fit the ‘brute’ or ‘bruiser’ type of person based on appearance.

Caulifla shrugged, not really caring that much. “Maybe they’re in a group like us? They could be friends or something.”

Two people walked out of the entrance of the palace, an older man and an equally old woman, both wore refined clothing, befitting of ‘old money’ as the man had a top hat and a monocle along with an ornate walking cane. The woman was wearing a long dress, a wide-brimmed hat with a large feather plume in one side, and carrying a designer purse.

“My, my…” The rich old man said as he and his wife walked past the line. “So that was it, really! Now that I’ve been reminded, I did leave it there! My soldi gold pickling stone!”

“How wonderful, my dear.” His wife giggled as the couple stopped several meters into the desert.

The older man tossed out a single Capsule and in the familiar cloud of smoke, a fancy hover car appeared and the rich couple got inside. With a whirr and the sound of air being displaced, the fancy car zoomed away over the sand, kicking up a cloud of dust and grit behind it.

“Well, not everyone is a tough guy.” Launch mentioned as the hover car disappeared in the distance.

“Yeah… I guess not.” Kale blinked as the ghost from before floated over to the five men in front of them.

“Will the next group please follow me?” The ghost requested of the five burly men.

The five men all started shouting and cheering, clearly trying to pump themselves up.

“Yeah!”

“Go!”

“Let’s get ‘em!”

The group of five followed the ghost into the palace.

Goku tilted his head as the group ahead of them disappeared into the palace. “They’re really pumped up, huh?”

Launch narrowed her eyes, finding that suspicious compared to the rich couple that had come out earlier. “That does seem weird.”

Kale perked up a moment later, cupping one hand to her ear. “Do you guys hear that?”

Caulifla and Goku both mimicked Kale’s pose, cupping a hand to their ears as well.

“Aaagh!”

“No!”

“M-Mercy!”

Caulifla blinked at the cries of pain. “What’s going on in there?”

A few minutes of silence followed before the five burly men came limping and hobbling out of the palace. One man was walking with crutches, his left leg in a makeshift cast. Another man had his right arm bandaged up and in a sling. The large guy in the traditional martial artist clothing had a swollen cheek and a large bump on his bald head. The gorilla man looked to be missing a few teeth and his face was bruised as he was supported by the bald martial artist so that he could walk. The lion man looked the best off, merely using a long stick to help him walk on unsteady feet, his left eye blackened and his wild hair completely disheveled.

“Sorry folks, better luck next time.” The ghost in the conical straw hat said to the men as they hobbled away.

“Eh?” Launch blinked at the thorough beating that the group of men had taken.

The ghost turned to them with its smile still in place. “Thanks for waiting…”

“What happened to those guys?” Kale asked, motioning towards the beaten up men behind them.

The smiling ghost only chuckled. “Heh heh heh heh… Come this way, please…” He floated into the palace as everyone followed after him, glancing between each other at the lack of an answer. “Right through here. “The ghost waved its almost triangular ‘arm’ towards the entrance of the main building of the palace. “I have brought them.” The ghost said as it floated into the large dome-shaped building first.

“Heh heh…” An old woman in a black robe and a black witch’s hat chuckled. The fact that she was sitting atop a large floating orb only added to her oddness. “My, my, aren’t you all so young?” She said, before her eyes fell on Roshi. “Well, almost all of you.”

“Long time no see, big sister.” Roshi greeted with a small wave.

“Not that you’ve changed one iota.” The old woman said with derision.

Roshi tsked at his sister. “Oh, stuff it!”

Kale looked between Roshi and the old woman. “I see why you said that she wouldn’t do you any favors, Master.”

“Imagine growing up with her!” Roshi said with a bit of snark.

“No favors. I live for two things, money and fights.” The old woman declared.

Roshi adjusted his sunglasses a bit. “How much money do you have, sis?”

With the most deadpan stare, the old woman replied sharply. “You’ll never know, free loader!”

Goku, wanting to find the last Dragon Ball as soon as he could, stepped forward and looked up at the floating old woman. “Are you the All-Seeing Bone?” He managed to get the first part right this time…but fumbled the last word.

“That’s ‘All-Seeing Crone’…” The old woman corrected.

“That’s a weird name.” Goku said bluntly.

The old woman nearly fell off her floating orb at Goku’s words. “It’s not my name! It’s my professional Title!” She shouted at Goku before letting out a huff. “Just call me Fortuneteller Baba, if you must.”

Goku smiled at Baba. “Okay! There’s something I want you to find for me!”

“Very well. That will be ten-million Zeni.” Baba told Goku the price for her magical divination.

“TEN MILLION?!” Launch exclaimed, pointing at Baba incredulously. “Do we look like we just carry that much money around?!”

Baba chuckled at the blonde young woman’s outburst. “Not enough to pay, eh?” She floated atop her large orb towards the huge doorway on the opposite side of the building. “In that case, come this way.”

Caulifla put her hands behind her head as the group followed behind Baba. “So, what do we have to do to get your help?”

“I’m going to have you battle my champions…one by one.” Baba informed the group at large as she led them to a large circular stone ring with a ring of grass around the elevated platform, the lake surrounding the entire circular area. “Win, and you can fight the next champion. Lose, and another person in your group must try. If you can defeat five of my champions, I’ll divine for you without charge.”

Kale connected the dots fairly quickly. “Oh! So that’s what happened to those guys before us!”

“They got beaten, huh?” Caulifla smirked as she cracked her knuckles. “Well, hate to break it to you, old lady. But three of us made it to the main tournament of the Tenka’ichi Budokai!”

“Oh?” Baba looked mildly amused. “Well then… This will be fun, won’t it?”

“You up for it?” Goku asked Kale and Caulifla with a grin.

Caulifla scoffed at the question. “Sure! We’re supposed to be training today anyway!”

Kale nodded once. “I’ll do my best!”

Baba narrowed her eyes at Roshi. “You’re not allowed.”

“I know, I know.” Roshi waved his sister off. “These four will be more than enough. I believe in them.”

Goku grinned up at Baba. “Yeah, the four of us will take care of it!”

“You’re going to fight my five with just your four?” Baba asked, seeming amused by Goku’s words. “Ho ho ho! The confidence of youth!”

“Heh! I feel sorry for these champions of yours!” Caulifla smirked at Baba, her tail waving behind her.

Launch stepped up to ask the obvious question. “What are the rules of the fights?”

Baba grinned a little. “Not many. If you beg for mercy or fall in the lake, you lose.” Getting nods of understanding from the four challengers, Baba smirked. “And with that, let us begin. Who will start from your side?”

Before any of the Saiyans could volunteer, Launch stepped up. “I will.”

“Hey!” Caulifla stepped right up to Launch. “Why do you get to go first?!”

“I’m going to gauge this champion of hers. Even if I lose quick, you’ll at least know who the champion is instead of going in blind.” Launch explained to all three Saiyans firmly.

Kale put her hands on Caulifla’s shoulders. “Sis, let her do this. She’s helping us.”

“Good luck, Launch!” Goku smiled at Launch with confidence.

Once Roshi, Caulifla, Kale, and Goku were standing on the grass next to the ring, Launch looked at Baba, waiting for the old woman to bring out her first champion. When nothing happened for a while, Launch started getting impatient.

“Aren’t you going to call out your fighter?” Launch demanded of Baba.

Baba only smirked. “Ho ho ho… But your opponent is already here.”

Launch doubled over as a punch slammed into her stomach. “Gah!” She stumbled backwards, holding her stomach with both hands. “Wha… koff… What the fuck?!”

“Can’t see him?” Baba chuckled. “Heh heh heh… Of course not, he’s the Invisible Man.”

A punch hit Launch in the face and she staggered to her right, nearly losing her footing. “Augh! Son of a…” She held her cheek, feeling the pain and knew that she was going to have a bruise from that. Launch swung a wild haymaker at where she thought the invisible man was, but her fist just passed through open air. “Where’d you go?!”

A kick to the side sent Launch crashing to the floor close to the edge of the ring.

“Damn it!” Launch bit out as he scrambled to her feet. A few loud footsteps alerted her to someone rapidly approaching her, most likely to shove her out of the ring, and she launched a kick straight in front of her.

And connected.

“AWK!!!” A man’s voice choked out, followed by a low whine and whimper. A small thud was heard a second later.

Launch held her stomach and her cheek. “Serves you right, asshole!” She started kicking the space in front of her over and over again.

“Gah! Ow! Ack! St-Stop!” A man cried out in a squeaky voice, clearly unable to speak properly.

Kale blinked as she realized what had happened. “Did she kick him in the…”

“HAHAHAHAHA!!!” Caulifla laughed loudly, pointing at where the invisible man was.

Roshi clenched his thighs closed a bit with a grimace. “Well… Luck is part of any fight.”

“Oh!” Goku had caught on and chuckled slightly. “Good thing attacks on the ‘jewels’ aren’t against the rules here.”

Launch looked over at Baba. “Hey! He begged for mercy! That means I win, right?”

Baba nodded once. “Yes, yes. Even if it was by sheer dumb luck.” The ghost in the conical straw hat floated over and helped the Invisible Man out of the ring. The man, having taken a full power kick to the groin from Launch and her combat boots, definitely needed the assistance. “Count Dracula, enter!” Baba called out.

“Dracula?” Launch looked confused until a bat flew out from the secondary building on the opposite side of the ring.

With a ‘poof’ of smoke, the bat changed into a pale man with bluish skin, wearing green shorts, with hist fists in boxing gloves and his feet wrapped in martial arts bandages. The vampire had the classic fangs, the pointed ears, and his brown hair was spiked up. “Tra-la-la-la!” He sang out as he bowed and then assumed a stance.

“Hey, that bat turned into a person!” Goku pointed out in amazement.

“A kickboxer, huh?” Launch grimaced, seeing the stance the vampire had taken up. Her body still hurt from the blows that she’d taken from the Invisible Man.

“Tag out!” Caulifla shouted to Launch, sticking her hand out towards Launch.

Launch looked at Baba and tagged Caulifla’s hand. “I’m out.” She stepped out of the ring as Caulifla jumped in.

Kale and Goku looked over Launch, but she just grinned and told them both that she was fine.

“Alright, weirdo! Let’s do this!” Caulifla smirked as she took up her stance with a grin.

“Begin!” Baba called out.

“Skreehehehe!” Dracula laughed only to blink as Caulifla became wavy around the edges. “Guakh!!!” He cried out as Caulifla’s leg hit him from the side, his body bending around her shin before he was launched off the ring and went splashing into the lake.

Caulifla blinked at how easy the fight had been. “Was that it?” She didn’t look impressed at all. “That was boring!”

“Hmm…” Baba’s eyes widened for just a moment before they returned to normal and she shot a look at Roshi.

“Heh!” Roshi gave his sister a ‘peace’ sign with a grin.

Baba looked at Caulifla and gave the girl a nod. “Impressive. Now, for the next two opponents, we’re going to change arenas.” She floated towards the far building on the opposite side of the ring on her orb. “Follow me.”

The group followed after Baba, heading up a flight of stairs almost as soon as they entered the large building.

“Where is this match going to be?” Caulifla questioned Baba. But it was Roshi that answered her.

“The devil’s cesspool.” Roshi cautioned his student as they all walked up the stairs.

Caulifla cocked an eyebrow at that. “Devil’s cesspool?” It sounded disgusting. “Why kind of arena is that? Any advice?”

Roshi nodded once. “Yes. Don’t die! Take it from me.”

“That’s…helpful.” Caulifla deadpanned at Roshi.

Baba stopped by a door with a large skull covering it. “The contestant enters through here.”

Caulifla shrugged without a care. “Sure.” She entered the door and it closed behind her.

“The rest of you come this way. There’s an excellent view of the match from up here.” Baba floated further up the stairs until they came to a viewing area that showed a massive chamber with two large stone devil statues with their long tongues sticking out, nearly touching in the center of the chamber, both statues were sitting on equally massive stone toilets, with a strange bubbling liquid far below covering the bottom of the chamber. “There. See?” Baba pointed at the open mouth of one of the demons as Caulifla steeped out of it and on to the tongue-shaped platform.

“This is a classy room.” Launch snarked at the statues.

Caulifla looked over at the window and saw everyone. “What’s the idea, old woman?!” She had no idea what this weird chamber had to do with fighting.

“You’re going to be fighting atop those demon statues’ tongues.” Baba explained to Caulifla simply. “Below you is a swamp of acid. Fall in and you die.” She pulled a large piece of meat from seemingly nowhere. “Watch carefully as I drop this slab of meat…” She let the meat fall toward the bubbling acid and in mere seconds it had dissolved completely before everyone’s eyes.

“What the hell?” Caulifla’s eyes widened at the deadly acid.

Baba chuckled at everyone’s surprise. “As you can see, one misstep and you’ll dissolve completely into nothingness.” She looked at Caulifla with a grin. “If you want to call off the match, now’s the time. You still have so much to live for.”

Caulifla tsked at Baba’s words. “Hell no! Start the match!”

“Hee hee hee! Now that’s the spirit!” Baba cackled at Caulifla’s response. “Well then, let me introduce you to my third champion…”

Launch looked pointedly at Roshi. “The little brother’s a lech… The older sister’s a sadist… You must come from one hell of family, old man.”

Roshi noticeably kept silent, not looking at Launch.

“…that living hunk of jerky… The Mummy!” Baba announced as the third champion was heard walking from within the mouth of the demon statue opposite of Caulifla’s.

A massive man wrapped in bandages emerged from the other demon statue’s mouth, having to duck to fit through the opening. He saw Caulifla and smirked at her as he stood to his full height, towering over the Saiyan girl. “Mwahaha…” He chuckled at his opponent.

“A mummy? You have a thing for monster movies, old lady?” Caulifla questioned Baba as she noticed the theme of the champions.

“Remember, if you cry ‘Mercy’ or die…you lose!” Baba told Caulifla. “Now begin!”

“Sis! Be careful!” Kale called out to Caulifla, worry on her face.

Caulifla dropped into her stance and analyzed her opponent. ‘He’s huge… Probably uses his size and strength to force his opponent’s off this narrow platform. So, lets see how he reacts to this!’ She blurred forward, leaving behind an After Image.

“Hmph!” The mummy leapt into the air and came down behind Caulifla, ignoring her After Image entirely as he threw a powerful reverse roundhouse towards Caulifla’s head.

“Too slow!” Caulifla ducked under the kick, only to be barraged by a blitz of punches from the mummy. With deft steps and blocks, she knocked all of the punches away and stepped into the mummy’s guard, slamming her knees into the huge man’s stomach, making him stagger backwards a step with a grunt.

“He’s incredibly swift for his size!” Roshi mentioned as he watched the fight.

Goku tilted his head. “You think so?” His eyes were following every punch from the mummy easily enough.

As Caulifla rushed the mummy, he dropped low and swept her feet, knocking her to the platform on her side. With his unusual speed, the mummy kicked Caulifla across the platform and then leapt into the air to come down on her with a driving knee strike.

“Ngh!” Caulifla rolled out of the way of the knee strike and then lashed out with her own powerful leg sweep, knocking the mummy off balance and sending him falling towards the acid.

“He’s falling!” Kale called out as the mummy fell from the platform.

The mummy only smirked as he unfurled a bandage for his right arm and launched the cloth upwards, where it wrapped around one of the stone tongues. He swung over the pit of acid and then kicked off the wall, launching himself up high before he landed easily on the narrow platform again. “Hehehe! You’ll stoop to anything to win, huh? I hope you’re prepared to pay for it.”

Baba snickered as everyone else was shocked that the mummy had managed to recover. “My champions won’t go down so easily.”

“Bring it on!” Caulifla called out as the mummy rushed her again.

The two clashed in a furious exchanges of punches and kicks, becoming a blur to Launch’s eyes as she struggled to keep track of the fight. A chop nearly hit Caulifla in the neck, but she managed to lean to the side to dodge the blow, bringing up her left leg in the process and slam it into the mummy’s large, sturdy body.

“Guh!” The mummy grunted as his foot nearly slipped off the edge of the narrow platform again. But he launched his knee at the off balance Caulifla, forcing her to block with her own raised knee. But she didn’t take into account her stance and the force of the mummy’s strike as she went sailing off the edge of the platform.

“Shit!” Caulifla cursed as she fell towards the acid below.

“Sis!” Kale screamed out.

Goku jumped up onto the edge of the large viewing area and his Nyoibō was in his hands. “Nyoibō, extend!” The red pole glowed before shooting towards where Caulifla was falling. The magical weapon reached below Caulifla and she quickly grabbed onto it to stop her fall.

Caulifla let out a breath as she held onto the Nyoibō as it started to shorten, bringing her up to Goku and the others. “Damn it, I lost my footing of all things!” She cursed the simple mistake that had cost her the fight.

“That’s a victory for the mummy.” Baba declared and the large mummy smirked as he flexed on the narrow platform.

“What’s important is that you’re okay.” Roshi told his student as it had been a close call.

Goku nodded, hugging Caulifla warmly. “You can always fight again.”

Launch agreed, wrapping Caulifla in a one-armed side hug. “Maybe not in this challenge, but you live to fight another day.”

“Should I go next or?” Goku looked towards Kale, but she wasn’t there anymore. “Huh? Where’d Kale go?”

Baba provided the answer not even a second later. “Next match! Begin!”

Goku, Caulifla, and Launch all snapped their eyes to the stone tongue platform, seeing Kale standing across from the mummy, her hands at her sides as she faced down the hulking man.

The mummy smirked at Kale. “So, you’re the next contestant, huh?”

“I hope you didn’t expect a challenge, mummy.” Baba chuckled at what appeared to be a mismatch, given what Baba had seen of Kale, so far.

Kale didn’t say a word or move a muscle. Her expression was like stone, but her eyes glowed with a deep rage that was rising to the surface.

Something’s odd…’ The mummy noticed as he took his stance. ‘…she’s just standing there, but there are no openings in her guard.’ He slid his lead foot forward, testing to see if Kael would react at all. When she didn’t, the mummy grimaced. ‘She’s not even a third my size…yet, there’s something imposing about her.

“What’re you doing?!” Baba demanded when neither fighter had moved since the beginning of the match. “Hurry up and get on with it!”

The mummy tensed his body and prepared to attack. “All right! You asked for it!” He rushed straight towards Kale; his fist cocked back for a devastating punch.

In a move even Goku found hard to see, Kale’s right foot shot forward, kicking the mummy’s leading leg strongly, right before he could place his foot down. This led to an immediate loss of balance as the downward force of the mummy’s interrupted step sent him tilting to his left. There was a blur of white as the mummy went rocketing into the wall next to the viewing area, shattering the stone s his large body crashed through it and he lay in a crumpled heap on the floor beyond.

Baba jerked to the side strongly, her eyes wide in shock as she saw what had become of her champion.

“Wh-What just happened?” Launch asked in shock, looking between Kale and the beaten form of the mummy.

“Kale kicked out his leg, and then she elbowed him right in the chest.” Goku said, having only just kept up with the sudden increase in Kale’s speed and power.

“That was awesome, Kale!” Caulifla shouted down to Kale with a bright grin on her face.

Kale looked like she’d just snapped out of her previous anger and she bashfully smiled up at Caulifla, Goku, Launch, and Roshi. “Ah, I didn’t mean to hit him that hard. I was just so mad at him for almost killing Caulifla.” She bowed to Baba in apology for severely injuring one of her champions.

I’ve never seen a fighter gain such speed and power just from anger. She executed her strikes quickly as well, rather than going wild with rage.’ Roshi thought to himself, having never seen such a display from Kale in the months that he’d been training her.

“Don’t worry about it, girl.” Baba shook herself and responded easily to Kale’s apology. “The mummy is incredibly tough. He’ll recover sooner than any normal man.” She assured Kale before looking down at the girl for a moment. “Are you going to take the next match as well?”

“Yes, if that’s okay?” Kale wanted to fight and put her training to good use. The chance to test her strength made her smile as she looked towards the mouth of the opposite demon statue, waiting for her opponent.

Baba snorted lightly at Kale’s seeming eagerness. “You won’t be so eager soon, girl!” She pointed towards the demon statue’s mouth. “All right! The fourth champion! It’s your turn…Devil!”

The next fighter to appear on the opposite side of Kale was a man in a blue suit with large white horns on his head and bat-like wings on his back. He crossed his arms and smirked darkly at Kale. “You’re the first group to ever make it this far! But your luck has run out against me!” The Devil declared with certainty.

“Are you all based on movie monsters?” Kale asked the Devil curiously.

Roshi leaned forward in shock. “What?! She’s bringing the devil out already?! He always used to be her right-hand man! That means she’s saving an even more incredible foe for last!”

“Begin!” baba began the match suddenly.

The Devil leapt into the air, his wings spread wide and a thin tail with an arrow-like pointed tip was revealed swaying behind him. “Ready to visit my place, girl? Care to visit Hell?!” He dove down at Kale with his sharp claws bared to slash her.

Kale threw a roundhouse kick at the speeding Devil, but he ducked beneath it, his clawed hands nearly reaching Kale before a force slammed into the side of his head and sent his through the air before he flapped his wings powerfully to stop himself.

“Gah!” The Devil held his injured cheek with one hand while looking down at Kale, seeing her monkey-like tail swaying behind her.

“W-What?!” Baba exclaimed in surprise that the Devil had been struck so easily.

“You don’t seem much stronger than the mummy from before.” Kale said honestly as the Devil landed on the narrow platform again.

The Devil bared his fangs at Kale for her words. “W-What?! How dare you taunt the Devil, you churl!”

Baba narrowed her eyes at the lull in the fighting. “Spare us the talking, Devil! Just take care of her!”

“Y-Yes, ma’am!” The Devil said before rushing at Kale. “Hyoh!” He swiped his claws at Kale’s face, but she backstepped to avoid them. A low kick towards her legs was leapt away from, creating some distance. When the Devil lunged for Kale, she grabbed the wrist of his right hand and jerked it to the side, crossing it over his chest and opening up his side to a powerful knee strike to his liver. “GAUGKH!!!” The Devil hacked out a mouthful of spit as he skidded backward and tenderly held his injured side.

Kale watched as the Devil took heavy breaths as he held his side. “Do you want to quit?”

The Devil panted in pain as she glared at Kale. “Heh… Heh heh… Y-You think you can take down the D-Devil with no more than that, s-so you?!”

“I haven’t used any Ki techniques on you yet.” Kale told the Devil truthfully, while also revealing that she still wasn’t going all out.

“Wh-What?!” The Devil grimaced as his body shook slightly.

Launch crossed her arms with a smirk. “For a ‘Devil’ he doesn’t seem like much.” Sure, she couldn’t follow the match at all with her eyes, but Kale was handling the guy easily enough.

“It only looks that way.” Roshi said, getting Launch, Caulifla, and Goku’s attention. “The Devil is a two-time champion of the Tenka’ichi Budokai! It’s just that Kale is that much better!”

Caulifla didn’t look like she believed it. “That guy’s a two-time champion?”

“Whoa…” Goku looked back at the Devil, wondering if he was still holding something back.

“DEVIL!!! Can’t you do any better than that?!” Baba yelled down at her champion, never having seen him being handled so easily.

The Devil straightened up to his full height, and adopted a calm expression. “Of c-course I can, my lady.” He brought his hands up to the sides of his head, extending his index and middle fingers, placing them against his temples. “Now I’ll show my true strength!”

Kale readied her stance, prepared for whatever the Devil was about to do.

“Even the most sweet-faced little goody-goody has a drop of evil in his heart.” The Devil said with a dark smirk. “I can make that little drop expand and expand and expand until…” He bared his fangs at Kael. “…you’re blown to bits!”

“Huh?” Kale didn’t understand what the Devil was talking about.

Roshi, however, very much did. “No! It’s the Beam of Evil! He really IS planning to kill Kale!”

“Hyoh!” The Devil moved his fingertips from his temples to touching each other as he pointed them at Kale.

“Devil, wait! You don’t have to go that far!” Baba yelled at her champions, but the attack had already been launched.

A beam spiraled from the tips of the Devil’s fingers and coiled through the air as it raced towards Kale.

Kale charged straight through the large gap in the center of the technique, the way the beam spiraled around made it very slow and easy to predict its path. Even as the edges of the beam struck her and made her body start glowing, Kale slammed her palm into the Devil’s face. “KIAI!!!” She unleashed a burst of Ki from her palm and the in less than the time it took to blink, the Devil was half-buried through the far wall behind the demon statue that he’d entered from.

“Kale!” Caulifla, Goku, and Launch all yelled out in worry for Kale as her entire body glowed with the strange light of the Devil’s technique.

“It’s too late!” Roshi cried out.

Everyone watched as the glow surrounded Kale, only to slowly dim and shrink, before it disappeared entirely.

“What was that about?” Kale asked, looking herself over for any changes or injuries.

Baba gaped at Kale not being affected by the ‘Beam of Evil’ from the Devil. “What…what is this child?! Her heart is like a baby’s…or an animal’s?!” That was the only way that the Beam of Evil shouldn’t work.

“Either her thoughts were completely pure…or her mind was utterly blank…” Roshi let out a relieved breath. “Either way, she’s alive.”

Kale looked up at Baba with a small smile. “I won again, Miss Baba!”

“That was awesome, Kale!” Caulifla cheered loudly. “Was that the technique that Bulma came up with?!”

“That’s my girl!” Launch called out with a bright grin. “This last bum outta be a piece of cake too!”

Goku laughed brightly. “I wanted to fight too, but it doesn’t look like I’ll get to!” He was still happy that his friends got to fight and test out their skills though.

Baba floated on her orb, still surprised by the turn of events that had happened today. “I… I don’t believe this!” She composed herself as best as she could before looking at the group that her brother had brought to her place. “Hmph! I have to admit… You’re the first group to have progressed this far. But you have never met a warrior like the last champion! Hee hee hee!” She looked toward the mouth of the demon statue across from Kale. “Now, the time has come!”

“The time for…” A short man in a mask stepped onto the stone tongue. “…me!” he waved at Kale once. The masked man had a simply drawn fox mask on his face, he wore a traditional martial arts uniform, which consisted of a sleeveless orange jacket with a yellow circle pattern, over a long-sleeved black shirt and matching pants, and wore a green hat. The oddest thing about the masked man was the yellow circle above his head, looking much like a halo.

“H-Hello.” Kale waved back to the man who sounded like he was elderly.

Caulifla tilted her head in confusion. “That’s supposed to be the ace up her sleeve?”

The masked man looked up at Baba, both arms behind his back. “Madame Crone, I was wondering if we might leave this cramped room so that I may fight these last two youngsters all-out, no holds barred in the outside arena?”

Baba seemed to mull it over for a short moment. “Very well, why not?” She floated away, leading everyone back out to the arena outside where the first two matches had taken place.

As everyone was walking across the bridge that connected the outdoor arena to the other two buildings, Baba and the masked old man were talking.

“You’re going to win this, right?” Baba asked the masked champion.

“Well… I like to think so.” The old man in the mask chuckled.

Kale smiled at Goku as they walked next to each other. “Hey, Goku, do you want to take this last match?”

Goku looked at Kale in surprise. “Really, Kale? You’d let me fight instead of you?”

“I fought twice already. You haven’t gotten to fight at all.” Kale said with a small smile.

“Sure!, Thanks, Kale!” Goku beamed at Kale and kissed her cheek quickly.

Kale giggled, her hand coming up to touch the spot that Goku had kissed with a warm smile. “Goku…”

“I think you’ve got this last fight in the bag, Goku.” Launch said as she leaned over slightly to whisper into Goku’s ear.

“Maybe…” Goku said, his eyes watching the back of the masked man.

Caulifla noticed the way that Goku was watching the last of Baba’s champions. “Is something wrong, Goku? Usually you’d be getting way more excited about a fight like this.”

Goku shook his head once. “Nah… I’m excited. But that guy…he kind of smells nice, familiar…” A small little smile spread on Goku’s face as he watched the older man’s back. “I don’t know how to say it exactly, but… It’s a happy smell.”

“Happy smell?” Kale looked curious at Goku’s words.

In the middle of the outside arena the masked man spoke to Baba. “Madam Crone…”

“Yes?” Baba leaned in as the old masked man began to whisper to her.

Launch noticed that Roshi had been oddly quiet this whole time and looked back at him. “Something wrong, old man? You’ve been really quiet.”

“Hmm…” Roshi hummed thoughtfully, his eyes on the masked man’s back. “The masked champion’s voice sounds vaguely familiar… I have a feeling that I’ve met him somewhere before… But I can’t remember the details…” He lightly stroked his mustache as he tried to figure out where he may have met the mysterious man. “I can sense that he has an aura of great power, however…”

Launch raised an eyebrow at that. “Great power? Him?” She pointed her thumb at the old masked man.

Roshi nodded once. “My crone of a sister wouldn’t have so much confidence in him unless he were a master.”

“You’re kidding.” Launch looked the masked man over again. “He doesn’t look like much of a master.”

“Oh, ho, HO!” Baba laughed as the old man finished whispering to her. “So that’s what you had in mind!” She chuckled a bit more. “Well, well… Hehehe… This will be quite a treat!”

Goku stepped up onto the arena. “Are we gonna fight now?”

“All right, then!” Baba looked over at Goku as her orb started floating towards the edge of the arena. “The final match! And if it should be my champion who surrenders, not that it will happen, of course… I shall divine the location of the Dragon Ball for you.”

“Go, Goku!” Caulifla cheered loudly.

“Don’t let your guard down!” Kale shouted out.

Goku smiled at his girlfriends. “Don’t worry! I’m gonna win!”

The masked old man put his hands together rand bowed to Goku. “What about the pre-match greeting?”

“Oh, right!” Goku smiled as he put his feet together and then put his hands together before bowing to the masked old man.

“Hm…” Roshi looked closely at the masked man again.

Launch cocked an eyebrow at the strict adherence to tradition. “He seems pretty straight-laced for a guy in a mask.”

“Let the match begin!” Baba shouted and both Goku and the masked champion took up their stances.

A tension filled the air, quickly becoming palpable to those watching.

“This one…” Roshi said quietly, only heard by Kale, Caulifla, and Launch. “…will not be an easy match.”

He’s strange…’ Goku thought, looking for any openings in the old man’s guard. ‘His power’s totally different from the other ones!

“Attack!” The old masked man ordered strongly.

“Okay!” Goku shot forward in a blur. “Tah!” He chambered a punch, only to see the counter attack coming.

“Tsuo!” The old masked man launched a blurring spearhand strike towards Goku’s face.

Goku ducked, the spearhand strike, barely brushing the tips of his wild hair. “Ugh!” Goku’s feet touched the ground for only a fraction of a second before he launched a powerful uppercut towards the old man’s chin. “Yah!”

The masked man caught the punch with his left hand, and then, feeling Goku’s great strength, grabbed his left arm with his right had to provide support and extra strength. Both of them strained against each other in the deadlock for a moment before separating from each other, leaping backwards to make distance. The old man kicked off the ground, soaring over Goku to land on the opposite side of the ring. The masked man instantly kicked off the floor and blurred straight towards Goku, landing a punch against his jaw from the odd angle of the strike. Goku went flying backwards, but caught himself on his hands, and flipped back to his feet, kicking off the arena floor powerfully and spun into a powerful front kick that slammed into the masked man’s upper chest, just below his throat.

“Ugh!” The old man hacked out a painful cough as he used the force of the blow to make distance between himself and Goku.

Goku landed nimbly on the floor and stared his opponent down.

“Whoa…” Launch uttered out, only now seeing Goku and the old man again.

Kale looked at Caulifla. “Did you see all of that, Sis?”

Caulifla nodded after a second. “It was fast…but I still saw most of it.”

“What a match…Goku’s astounding…but so is the other fellow!” Roshi said as he tried to piece together the masked man’s fighting style to figure out his identity.

“Who in the heck is this old guy?!” Caulifla asked as she wondered how the old man was able to keep up with Goku.

The masked man blurred forward, striking at Goku with swift and precise attacks. Goku was forced to block and parry each strike until he knocked aside the old man’s arm, opening up his guard, and Goku landed a strong kick across the man’s face.

“Huh?!” Goku’s eyes widened as the old man grabbed his ankle that was still in the air and then bodily slammed him face first into the arena floor. Before Goku could react, the masked man threw him high into the air at great speed.

“He tossed him upwards! What’s he planning to do?!” Roshi wondered as the masked man crouched down and then launched himself straight up with a powerful leap.

Goku saw the masked old man appear right above him a split second before the man spun into a front flip and dropped a devastating kick on Goku. “Guh!” Goku went rocketing straight down into the area floor, shattering some of the tiles and kicking up a small cloud of dust.

“N-No!” Kale cried out, her hands covering her mouth.

“Ho ho ho! That must have hurt.” The old man called out as he fell towards the arena below.

Goku shattered the fragments of the tiles as he shot upwards like an orange rocket.

“What?!” The masked old man cried out as Goku reached him in the air and then land his own devastating kick. The old man went flying backwards towards the large building behind the outdoor arena. He managed to flip in midair and land on his feet, absorbing the shock and using it to kick off the building straight at Goku. “Toh!”

“Oh!” Goku saw the masked man rocketing towards him the instant his feet touched the arena floor. With a grunt he steeled himself, channeling ki like he’d learned how to do in his fight against Taopaipai, and tightened his muscles.

The old man’s kick slammed into Goku’s torso at full power with an audible thud. “What?!” The masked man exclaimed as Goku didn’t even budge.

Caulifla, Kale, Launch, and Roshi were all gaping in surprise that Goku had managed to taken that kick without injury.

“Heh heh heh…” Goku had a wide smile on his face as the old man landed on the arena floor. “Wow, you’re strong! This is exciting!”

What kind of training did he get?! He took my kick full force!’ The masked old man wondered in the privacy of his mind. ‘Well then, perhaps I should toss in a surprise?’ He thought as he moved his arms forward, bringing his wrists together with his hands open, palms facing Goku and his fingers curled halfway.

Goku blinked, the stance incredibly familiar to him. “Huh?!”

“Ka… Me….” The masked man began the technique as he focused his ki into his palms.

“Huh!” Roshi exclaimed, recognizing his won technique anywhere. ‘There’s no one that knows my technique that I haven’t taught myself!

Caulifla slammed her hands on the edge of the arena. “No way!”

Kale cried out in disbelief. “That’s not possible!”

“Ha… Me…” The old man brought his cupped hands down towards his right hip as a glowing ball of blue-white ki formed.

“Really?!” Goku called out just as the old man threw his hands forward.

“HA!!!” The masked man launched the bema of ki straight at Goku.

Goku narrowed his eyes and his form briefly blurred. The Kamehameha passed through the After Image and blasted the lake near the far shore, kicking up a huge spray of water.

The old man seemed shocked at Goku’s dodge. “Eh?!”

“He disappeared!” Baba yelled in both shock and excitement. She did love incredible fights, after all.

“The After Image!” The masked old man realized instantly.

“Over here!” Goku shouted as he fell from high in the air, aiming straight for the masked man.

The old man looked up and realized what had happened. “That was awfully deft… Dodging my Kamehameha with the After Image technique and then escaping into the air.”

Goku dropped towards the masked man. “Now it’s my turn to attack!”

“But you made a fatal mistake! Ho ho ho! Because you don’t have full control in the air!” The masked man cupped his hands together again. “This is my opportunity! This time, you cannot escape my Kamehameha!”

“Ka… Me… Ha… Me…” Goku cupped his own hands at his side as he poured his ki into his palms, forming the familiar blue-white sphere of ki in his cupped hands.

The old man audibly gasped as he saw what Goku was doing. “Wh-What the…?! Don’t tell me you know the Kamehameha too?!”

“HA!!!” Goku threw his hands forward, unleashing the beam of ki straight down towards the masked man.

The old man leapt to the side, but the beam slammed into the arena before he could get out of range.

BOOM

The center of the arena exploded into shattered stone tiles, sending the masked man bouncing along the floor of the ring until he rolled to a stop.

Goku landed on the arena floor lightly, He saw the old man groaning, and leapt towards him before his opponent could get back to his feet, driving his knee into the masked man’s chest.”

“Gyaa!” The old man hacked out.

“Sh-Shoot!” Baba shouted at her champion looking like he was about to lose.

Goku stood over the downed man with a smile. “Hey, do you surrender?” He raised his elbow, prepared to drop it on the old man. “If you don’t say ‘mercy’, I’ll have to give you the final blow!”

Caulifla punched her fist into her opposite palm. “Yeah!”

“He won!” Kale beamed at Goku’s victory.

“Ho ho ho ho…” The old man chuckled, surprising Goku.

Goku blinked in confusion. “Huh? Why’re you laughing?”

The masked old man’s hand lashed out like a striking snake and grabbed Goku’s tail tightly.

“Hey!” Goku cried out as he felt his strength leaving him. “Grrrnn!” With a grunt, Goku mustered his fading strength and slammed his elbow down on the masked man powerfully.

“Guh!” The old man body cracked the tiles beneath him, and his feet shot upwards from the force that had hit his sprawled out body. As he gasped for breath, his grip on Goku’s tail faltered and Goku managed to pull his tail away from the old man and wrap it securely around his waist.

“How did you know about my tail?!” Goku demanded as he grabbed the front of the man’s clothes and pulled him up to his feet.

“To know about Goku’s tail weakness…and have learned the Kamehameha.” Roshi chuckled as all the pieces fit together in his mind. “That’s it! His true identity is…Son Gohan! Goku’s late grandfather!”

“What?!” Launch, Kale, and Caulifla looked at Roshi like the old man had gone insane.

Roshi turned to look at Baba. “That was the furthest thing from my mind, big sister.”

“Ho ho ho…” The masked old man chuckled as he set his feet on the ground. “Mercy. I lose.”

“Well… I guess that’s it.” Baba sighed, but the smile on her face showed how much she’d enjoyed the fight.

The old man put his hands behind his back and gave Goku a short bow. “Thank you for the spar.”

Goku blinked and bowed to the old man. “Thank you for the spar.”

“You’ve gotten quite strong, Goku. You’ve trained well…mostly.” The masked man praised Goku.

“How do you know my name?” Goku asked, having not heard what Roshi had said a moment ago as he’d been focused on the masked man.

The old man chuckled. “But it semes you still haven’t fully trained that weakness out of your tail…I thought I warned you about that?”

Goku’s eyes widened, having heard those exact words before, years ago. “Y-You… You don’t mean!” He pointed at the old man.

“My, my, how embarrassing. It took you this long to figure it out?” The old man took off the mask and looked at Goku with a smile, his thick white mustache rising up from how wide his smile was. “That’s right, lad. It’s me!” Son Gohan said with a chuckle as Goku gaped at him.

“Gr-Grampa?” Goku couldn’t believe it. “Grampa!” He took pull the old man into a warm hug and lifted him off his feet. “GRAMPA!!!”

Gohan laughed as Goku nearly spun him around. “Whoa there, lad! You’ve gotten bigger since I last saw you! Easy now!”

Happy tears escaped Goku’s eyes as he set his grandpa back on his feet. “Grampa…”

“Hahaha… Come now, my boy! There’s no need for tears when men meet again!” Son Gohan smiled at Goku, patting his shoulders as Goku laughed happily.

“I’m so happy for Goku.” Kale said, little tears gathering at the corners of her eyes.

Caulifla had a little smile on her lips as she crossed her arms. “Yeah.”

Launch gently pulled both Caulifla and Kale into a gentle hug with a warm smile of her own. “It’s nice to see those you care about again. Right?”

All three of them smiled at each other, knowing that they were much the same in their desire to see each other often.

“In any case, you’ve become quite the marvel.” Son Gohan praised Goku with a bright smile. “I never thought I’d be the one to lose! Did you receive training for Master Roshi?”

“Yep!” Goku smiled brightly in return.

“Been well, Gohan?” Roshi greeted his late student with a grin.

Son Gohan put his hands together and gave Roshi and proper bow. “Very well, Master. It has been a long time.”

Roshi agreed with a chuckle. “Quite some time. I didn’t even realize it was you at first.”

“But when did you come back to life, grampa?” Goku asked with a curious look.

Son Gohan pointed up at the halo above his head. “Oh, I haven’t come back to life. The esteemed ‘All-seeing Crone’…elder sister of our Master Muten Roshi…can freely travel between this world and the next.”

Baba grinned at the amazed looks on the faces of Launch, Kale, Goku, and Caulifla.

“So, she scouts deceased marital champions and brings us back here to fight matches…for quite a nice salary, I must say!” Son Gohan explained how he stood before them all today.

Goku was still nearly bouncing on his feet in joy. “Does that mean you can come live with me again, grampa?”

Son Gohan shook his head with a lopsided smile. “Alas, no. It doesn’t work that way. I can only return to this world for a single day.”

“You mean that those two meeting today was pure chance?” Launch asked, stunned by the coincidence.

Roshi scoffed slightly. “Heck no! My big sis can read the future! She knew we’d be coming today…didn’t you?” He looked at his sister from behind his sunglasses.

“Heh heh heh… Of course!” Baba revealed that she’d known the most likely outcome of the day before the group had ever arrived. “Gohan asked me to let him know if a boy with a monkey-like tail ever came by. I had no idea you were his grandson though.”

Son Gohan prostrated himself before Roshi in heartfelt thanks. “I had been concerned about how Goku would do… I never dreamed he’d be training under you, Master! Thank you so much! Now, I can return to the next world with no worries!”

Roshi chuckled and helped Son Gohan to his feet. “Think nothing of it, Gohan.” Roshi leaned in a bit. “In fact, Goku has even received lessons from Master Korin, as well!”

“Truly?!” Son Gohan marveled at how far Goku had grown from the young child that he’d originally taught martial arts.

“Hey, grampa!” Goku beamed at Gohan as he held up the Four-Star Dragon Ball. “Remember this?”

Son Gohan looked at the orange sphere with the four red stars in it. “Oh my! I remember when I picked up that little bauble a long time ago!” He chuckled that Goku had kept his memento all these years.

Goku looked over at Caulifla, Kale, and Launch. “Grampa! There’s some people that I want you to meet!” He nearly dragged Gohan over to the girls. “This is Kale.” He introduced Kale to his grandpa with a bright smile.

“Hello, sir.” Kale smiled, blushing slightly at meeting Goku’s grandfather so suddenly.

“A pleasure to meet you, young lady.” Son Gohan smiled kindly at Kale.

“This is Caulifla!” Goku introduced his grandpa to Caulifla next.

Caulifla smiled and waved to the old man. “Yo! Nice to meet ya!”

Son Gohan chuckled at the greeting. “And very nice to meet you, as well.”

Goku then introduced his grandpa to Launch. “And this is Launch!”

“It’s nice to meet you.” Launch was as polite as anyone had ever seen her.

“Glad to meet you as well, Miss Launch.” Son Gohan greeted Launch with a gentle smile.

“They’re my girlfriends!” Goku said with a beaming smile as she hugged all three from behind, barely managing to get his arms around all three of the girls.

“G-Girlfriends…” Son Gohan sputtered out in shock, never having thought his, somewhat dim, grandson would have a girlfriend…much less THREE!

Goku, still smiling brightly, nodded to his grandpa. “Uh huh!”

Son Gohan managed to get over his surprise after a moment and smiled at the three young women. “Thank you for looking after my grandson.”

“It’s no problem.” Kale, Launch, and Caulifla all said at the same time, before looking at each other and then cracking up laughing. Gohan and Goku joined them in warm laughter before Goku realized that someone was missing.

“Wait! You have to meet Bulma!” Goku took hold of his grandpa’s shoulders. “NIMBUS!!!:” He bellowed towards the sky.

“Bulma?” Son Gohan blinked at the new name while Nimbus soared down from the skies and stopped next to Goku.

“Be back in a bit!” Goku said to Baba as he sat on Nimbus with Gohan behind him.

Baba’s eyes widened and she tried to say something, but the Nimbus rocketed into the sky and disappeared over the horizon in mere seconds. “I… Ugh…” She glanced over at Roshi. “He’s definitely your student.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Roshi questioned his big sister with clear annoyance in his voice.

While brother and sister bickered; Launch Caulifla and Kale all looked towards the horizon where the Nimbus had disappeared.

“Anyone else see that coming?” Caulifla asked with a grin.

“Yep.” Launch snickered as she crossed her arms.

Kale nodded with a cute smile. “Goku wouldn’t leave Bulma out of meeting his grandpa.”

“Well, when he gets back, we’ll have the old lady find the last Dragon Ball for us.” Caulifla shrugged, looking over at Launch.

Launch didn’t look away from the horizon where Goku had gone. “Yeah…” She silently accepted the gentle hug from Kale, putting her arm around the slightly shorter girl’s shoulders. “Soon enough… Looks like both of me will finally get to live our own lives.”

BAM!!!

Stronger Goku, plus Caulifla and Kale with him, means Baba’s champions don’t really stand much of a chance!

With the changes earlier in the story building up over time, changing how Goku and friends have learned and grown, things will continue to change more!

Launch got a fight!

She managed to win, entirely by luck, but a win is a win! Hah! Kicked the Invisible Man right in the balls!

Caulifla easily knocks out Dracula, only to lose by ‘ring out’ to the Mummy.

Kale, however, shows a brief display of a greater power deep within. One that’s sparked by rage! Thankfully, Kale’s anger starts out cold, rather than an instant blind rage that would make her lose herself.

Goku reunites with Grandpa Gohan! Yay!

Then he introduces his grandpa to his three present girlfriends, shocking the old man completely! Heh!

Of course, Goku can’t leave Bulma out! So, he basically grabs his grandpa and then flies off instantly! Baba doesn’t get a single word in about it!

But now that Goku and friends have conquered Baba’s champions, she’ll divine the location of the missing Dragon Ball!

Where could it have ended up? Or perhaps a better question would be, WHO did it end up in the hands of?

Keep reading to find out!
