I think Indy was supposed to be in college and she was in high school. Which is weird now, but at the time was pretty normal. (I suspect that Harrison Ford looks older than Indy is supposed to be.)

Indy shooting the saber swinger was Ford's idea because he was suffering from dysentery during the filming, so he asked if he could just shoot him instead of doing the long action scene that was originally planned.
