Additional disclaimer - I was able to film today and Thursday's drops, but I'm having to edit at the hospital in between things. My grandfather ended up in the hospital while I was out of town. My dad and I have been taking turns staying with him all day/evening. He was doing a lot better and improving, but then he was discharged to a skilled facility (to build up his strength for a few days) by the hospital doctor.... despite the consulting infectious diseases recommendation and our protest to keep him in the hospital for a couple more days due to his other health conditions and age. Lo and behold he was there 15 hours before we had to rush him back to the hospital and now things are a bit rocky again. That said:

  • This video I originally planned for Thursday, but since it's shorter and required less editing I needed to switch it with the new Clipse album video since it ended up being a lot longer than I expected.

  • Full transparency the editing on this isn't as polished as normal. Also, pretty sure I accidentally started calling "Odd Future" ...."Odd Fellows" ? .....I don't even know my brain was not cooperating🤦🏻‍♀️

In early Tyler I see a crazy-ass 20something coming to terms with his own queer/bi identity. Probably from an environment that he had to navigate quietly. I know a lot of folks who went through a shock/extreme phase in their expression before coming into themselves. The fact that Tyler is still cool with the OFWGKTA crew says they’ve seen that too, that he needed to evolve.

I have heard about 3-5 complete Taylor songs. I had made up my opinion of his artist abilities last year. Now, vambie gives me a second chance to give him a honest ear. I think he’s a solid artist. Not my cup of tea sound wise. As a person he is really interesting and authentic though. So, I will give it a deep dive and hold my opinions ,and be willing to learn from Taylor fans. I will be reading every one’s post to learn more about Taylor the person. The music.

I do know one thing about Taylor. He’s a doesn’t back down. He has that Kendrick approach to respect. Taylor did a song with maxo cream ( Texas hoover crip) maxo set was hanging out at with Taylor. Trying to make fun Taylor about openly saying “gay stuff” and Taylor stood up for himself. In another man’s city around a bunch of gang members. They respected him after. I don’t think it was them being homophobic towards him. It was them testing him as a man, because you have to stand on your principles on the streets or you will get punked fast.

okay, your reaction was about what i expected 😭. few things: it’s really crazy to see how desensitized i am, when i can like nod my head to songs like blow and assmilk, and sarah being like one of my favorite songs ever from a narrative and production standpoint, and you were losing your mind. which like, fair, they’re very disturbing. 2: the second beat you heard when listening to sarah isn’t apart of sarah, it’s a song called rotten sarah, a sequel that never released but was later leaked, guess it was added onto what you listened on. and about goblin and wolf, if you can handle sarah, you should be fine, there’s scattered lines that are really bad but no full song that’s that visceral. and since you seem to be invested in the story, i would go ahead and listen to wolf next, and follow that up with goblin, that’s the chronological order, and wolf is a little break from all the… sarah-type stuff (mostly) also praying for your grandpa !! <3

Lol yeah I would have recommended Tupac or J Cole or Kanye. Early Tyler isn't good to me unless you're 14 but his Flower Boy Album isn't horror core, it's amazing and beautiful.

Well, we did try to warn you. Some of us at least. Personally I completely empathize with your reaction, I don't go back to early Tyler myself outside of a few songs. Just know that by Flower Boy, he's not just a much better artist, but the edginess is pretty much gone. Nothing as bad as a lot of the stuff on here. Personally, I would advise you to skip most of Goblin, it's not just his worst album musically, it also gets even worse lyrically than Bastard. The opening/title track is about the reaction to Bastard, and Yonkers is THE essential early Tyler song. Both are relatively harmless lyrically. She is the other essential song off the album, and I'd say it would sit about in the middle of Bastards in terms of violent lyrics. I think you should be ok doing those three songs based on your reactions to Bastard. There might be a few more decent songs on the album, I'd have to go back and give it a quick listen. I guess we could condense the Goblin tracklist down to a palatable EP for you. But much of the album is, as far as I remember it, just a worse version of Bastard. I have to step away for a bit but I'll comment my 2 cents on Wolf and Cherry Bomb below later.

As others have stated, starting with this one is definitely a choice lmao. I remember being an emo kid growing up, who was angry too. This angry? Probably not, but angry nonetheless. Tyler, The Creator is probably my 2nd favorite hip-hop artist right now outside of Kendrick, and that 's in large part due to his growth while simultaneously still maintaining the good parts of his edge if that makes sense.

i just joined your patreon for the first time because of this album and haven't watched this reaction yet but by the comments i can tell your reactions about to be what i think its gonna be 😂. BUT i will say one thing, Tylers growth as a person is one of the best things about him and his music. I think him starting like this will be all the mroe reason you'll really like him in his future albums, especially seeing the things you like about Kendricks discography. give him time though and i think hell definitely be an artist you like after a few albums and some studying. - edited side note while watching, i dont recommend skipping but if u really feel as though you have to skip i recommend skipping to wolf after watching the dive as thats when he definitely starts to mellow a bit in comparison but if you've made it through Bastard thats the worst of it by far imo.

Tyler is really good as a reaction because you can tie his Hey Now freestyle to the GNX album and Doechii's live performance with him on "Balloon." That would be a great thing to use as a way to introduce a series on Doechii.

Fun fact: In 2015, Tyler, the Creator was banned from entering the UK, New Zealand, and Australia for 3 to 5 years due to lyrics from his early albums Bastard and Goblin. The governments of those countries accused him of promoting violence, terrorism, and intolerance toward LGBTQ+ individuals. Back then, much of the media took his lyrics literally, failing to recognize that many were spoken through alter egos and fictional characters, not Tyler himself. As a result, he was labeled homophobic and accused of promoting violence against women. He faced intense backlash and was seen as one of the most controversial artists of his time. It’s wild to see how much he’s grown since then both as a person and as an artist, becoming one of the most creative and influential voices in music today.

Lots of love and well wishes to you and your family Vambie, and thank you for doing this whole album despite the regrets you have through it 😆. I really appreciate you being able to compartmentalize some of the subject matter from this era and IMO taking the time to think about the artist perspective from when it was made, like you did and have done for some of Kendricks songs is very much needed, because knowing a little bit about his mindset and what he was trying to do with the albums/songs in that time allows you to appreciate his artistry first to see the growth even if you don't really appreciate the musical content itself early in his career for obvious reasons. I'd honestly have to relisten to the albums that follow but I don't think his shock value lyrics gets much worse overall from here, and he does still maintain his "edgey" and "abrasive" persona and style in his music for awhile but he really does start to focus more on his production first, then lyrics with each release going forward. I'm content with you going through the best of songs or the whole albums going forward and maybe going live like you mentioned for some of them if it might make it more enjoyable for you and if we're not concerned about a YouTube upload for them but do what you feel most comfortable with of course ❤️

To be fair to Tyler, you don’t get his early works without early Bone Thugs, Cage, early Eminem, Insane Clown Posse, Esham, and others. Eminem was one of his biggest influences, but so was MF DOOM. Goblin is maybe on par with Badtard, then it gradually tones down. But even Tyler has written off much of his early projects, and went as far as to say which tracks from those albums he’s okay with, and which ones he’d throw away. You handled this much better than I anticipated though, so kudos to you for soldiering through it. However you decide to move forward, I just ask that you don’t completely abandon listening to his music, because as both Tyler and his music matures, I have a feeling you’ll end up loving him.

Ohhh, respect for going in order. These older albuma are the product of a kid raised on Eminem and Pharrell. And he was a teenager. Beyond just the juvenile stuff he's talking about, you can tell he has a major amount of talent under the hood. He doesn't hit his mass appeal stride until about 4 or 5 albums, but I was around as these came out and love all of them. The growth on every album is awesome.

His early music is definitely influenced by old Eminem. Tongue-in-cheek, young kid feeling a lot of emotions, distilling/heightening that, and translating it into a song. This wasn't long after Eminem dropped RELAPSE, where he's basically playing a serial killer the whole album. Hes definitely taking influence from that, and trusting that the audience is on board enough to get it and listen.

Alright, I skimmed through Goblin including the lyrics, and I don't think it's much worse than Bastard. Probably on the same level lyrically. But it is longer than Bastard and musically worse, so if Bastard was tough for you to get through, Goblin would still be even tougher. Personally I think if you do the songs Goblin, Yonkers, She, and Golden (the closing track on the standard version), that should be enough. And if you do decide to only do a few songs from Goblin, you might as well add the Odd Future posse cut Oldie from OF Tape Vol. 2 at the end of that recording session, that was released between Goblin and Wolf, was a big song for the group, and also has a music video where they're all just doing their verses and goofing around together if you want to put some faces to the OF members.

I feel like this album is a good peek into his beginnings so it was worth listening to for gaining some understanding of where he started. Goblin I would probably recommend just listening to some highlight tracks cause even as someone who became interested in him and odd future after hearing bastard I just didn’t like the album. Wolf is worth listening to though in my opinion, even though it’s part of this trilogy the subject matter is not as jarring and I feel like that’s where his next stage of growth took place after bastard, both lyrically and as a producer. It was the transition album from where he began to where he is now(in my opinion).

i hate tyler's old stuff. personally can't connect to it at all, and all the eminem edgelord horrorcore shit gets on my nerves. Flower Boy and Igor are incredible, and I *am* moved by the personal and creative evolution that it took to get to those albums––but there's nothing that'd make me sit through Bastard or Goblin. Personally the order of albums i would go for would be: Goblin - Wolf - Flower Boy - Igor - Call me if you get lost - Chromakopia and then Dont tap the glass. I think these albums are perfect to understand his evolution in music.

I was in middle/high school at the time of all of his early music coming out so I have the context of hearing this around the time of release. I thought the music was weird at the time as I wasn’t really an angsty teen. I wouldn’t say I found much of it shocking or took it seriously since I had heard other rap with violent lyrical themes and a lot of this stuff was just more normalized at the time. Parents hated the music at the time but he built a very large fanbase of teens off of this music. The culture has definitely changed a lot in the 15 or so years since and I’m sure if I hadn’t heard it at the time going back with my 2025 brain would make the music have more of a shock factor. I believe the fact that he was the same age of a lot of his fans is a big part of why he was able to easily transition to his more modern music without too much backlash. A lot of his fanbase grew up and evolved with him so I think it’s just chalked up to being a different time and a different culture. I remember preferring wolf out of the first 3 albums since it was a lot more chill but I wouldnt say I became a fan until flower boy. I believe he announced he was part of the LGBTQ community before releasing that album so that kind put a lot of his early music in a different context which also contributes to his lack of backlash.

Also doing discography deep dives is just now becoming a norm so I’m fairly sure a lot of his modern fans don’t even know this music exists because a lot of modern music fans don’t do their homework and really get into the evolution of an artist. There’s a lot of Kendrick fans that came in on Damn and haven’t really taken the time to listen to anything made prior. The amount of good kid first listen reactions I see on YouTube these days is fascinating.

I was introduced to this album in middle school in 2010 and I was hooked to the sonics and admittedly was a lot more brash in my humor as a young guy so I was not offended at the lyrics but I always did wish the lyrics were less crazy to really enjoy the whole scope of what he was attempting. Its been crazy growing with tylers music as hes evolved and matured through the years and when you listen to his new projects you can see everything he was trying to accomplish musically

Might I recommend a couple albums, pallet cleansers/refreshers to insert between Tyler album listens? “Warriors”, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s concept album based on the 1979 film. “Alligator bites never heal”, by Doechii. as much as you love Kendrick, you will love Doechii!

Honestly, if you're able to make it through both Bastard and Goblin, you'll be just fine going through the rest of the discography. Wolf is objectively the best out of the trilogy. I'd personally say just go ahead and go through Goblin, don't skip or do highlights of it. As for Bastard, I really appreciate it musically. The content of the tracks are raw, unfiltered, and unapologetic. In most cases that would be applauded, in Tyler's case, he's actively pushing the boundary of what can be done with his freedom of speech and expression in his artistry. My opinion is that the intense and visceral knee-jerk reaction to his earlier songs are intentional, but it shows that you're actively listening to what he's saying and that's often important to how Tyler tends to present his art, in my experience. For me, personally? I'd probably listen to it at least a few more times all the way through in my own time to really digest what I'm hearing, in multiple aspects. Looking forward to your next Tyler album reaction!

I don't listen to Tyler at all but for this album atleast I can tell he was heavily ASAP Rocky inspired, sonically that is. The production elements like that deep voiced autotune, and the beats it's very Long Live ASAP or Live Love ASAP (GREAT ALBUMS BTW), whichever came first lol

you're brave for starting at the very beginning, my 11 year old is a HUGE tyler fan but she obviously only knew of his work from Flower Boy and on. I played assmilk in the car one time and she said "IS THAT TYLER?!", she couldn't believe the words coming out of his mouth lmao .. I showed her a video explaining how "Ace" is just a character Tyler made up from his own teenage rage. I showed her the connection in the first 3 albums so she could see the amazing artistry hidden inside Tyler's "blatant" disrespect for hip hop.. (that's what old heads thought in 2012)

I think the biggest two problems with Goblin specifically are Tyler ruins great productions by being and saying super strange shit and I would say about half to a little under half of the songs on Goblin are just straight up terrible. Especially Fish. Its just not a good song

i llke these early albums because he was 17 at the time and going wild and saying whatever came to his mind with his friends. his next album goblin makes bastard seem tame. when you hear tron cat you will have an panic attack lol, wolf isnt that bad but there is a few problematic song but nothing other then that. but when you get to flower boy something changes, like you see his pre frontal cortex evolve in real time from a 17 year old kid who makes crazy music with his friends top a mature 32 year old man who has mastered his sound and no more crazy lyrics lol

okay even though tyler is one of my absolute favourite artists rn, i made a promise to myself to never revisit his first 2 albums so i'm currently breaking that promise. but it's for you and honestly, your reaction was SO worth it. my condolences for having to live thru this pain 😂 he really was THEEEE edgelord back in the day. it all pays off in later albums tho and is a real big relief when he fully develops his frontal lobe 🫶🏻

As someone who was an angry boy in his youth i listened to a lot of shock and horrorcore rap when i was younger, so im a little more desensitised to it. Tyler really does an amazing job of creating the soundscape to amplify the messed up stuff he's saying. Most artists in this genre of music are trying to gross you out and make you uncomfortable, i think thats why you felt it more than you were expecting. I have only lostened to Tyler from flowerboy onwards, so this is interesting, even if ive grown out of this type of music. Hopefully this wont be too much for you and you hop on to some other music between the 3 horrorcore albums to cleanse your pallette.

I've been listening to Tyler for 16 years and even I haven't touched this album lol. Nor Goblin (except the 2 hits on it). I'm very anti-cancellation and difficult to offend but I would've shut it off after Blow lol I literally gagged. So props to you!

You think this is sum you should React to Eminem's "Relapse" (2009) which Tyler saw as an inspiration for his horror-core raps/production and has the album cover in his living room house in California til this very day! I reckon cherry bombs a better point. It sounds off due to it being the transitional phase, but it has less of the more edgey language besides basic "f--- yous" and like 1 f slur from what I can remember, which was from a quick interlude

I think the little interlude thingy on "AssMilk" kinda helps show that it's just a couple of kids playing around and being as fucked up and edgy as possible on purpose. Not to excuse the lyrics. You can be plenty edgy without 99% of it being violence against women and homophobia.

that “outro to Sarah” actually isnt part of the album, its a demo that Tyler made after im not sure what you were listening to it on or why it attached that demo to this but thats interesting. I don’t think you were being dramatic about Sarah, that song is wild 💀 after a song like that, nothing else the album throws at you can ever feel shocking
