It's another installment of "really long Amtrak trip that gets a really long video"! I just need to remember to film the Manta ad in the middle before the public release next week...

OOH I love these long trip reports in coach!! Your trip with Jackson on the Empire Builder inspired me to take my trip across the country last Spring.

Noah K

Can we get a Jackson saying "ass" counter?

Corey

Miles face on the thumbnail just says it all

The Gulf Coast portion of the route is coming back early next year! (Now that’s a fun fact)

Corey

So Miles and Jackson took this train, got off at the least used station in New Mexico, took Greyhound to the least used station in Arizona, released the video for the Arizona station first, put out the video for the New Mexico station second, and put out the video for the train that took them to New Mexico in the first place third. AND included the same footage from the train in all three videos. Did I get the timeline right? Because that's the most Miles ass thing possible.

You could sleep at a table in broad daylight? How wrecked were you?

Matthew Harris

So this entire thing is a bit timey-wimey, because you actually rode two separate trains, because you visited the two stations in Arizona and New Mexico, right? I was wondering (since even a "normal" two day long train ride on the Empire Builder or California Zephyr is pretty wearing) was there any point when you were on this train, looking out at the desert, where you just got exhausted? Or did having the break for the cities actually make it easier, since you got to walk around?

Matthew Harris

From my own experience on long distance Amtrak trains, I would say once you get into the rhythm of train riding, you just end up taking your naps where you can get them.

Matthew Harris

The entire debate about whether leaving the train for food gets into a much larger question about what the focus and reason of transit is. This is actually an entire Heideggerian question, and I am not just saying that to be ironically pretentious! We can focus on transit first, with the fact that communities exist served by transit as a background fact. Or we can look at the communities first, and look at the fact that transit connects them as a consequence of that. And obviously, when people present transit experiences, they come from both perspectives, and sometimes end up in the middle! In my mind, though, by definition, there is no "pure transit", because transit is about connections, people are always coming and going, and the inputs into the system are, by definition, the system! And most of the travelogues that are only about the means of transit itself are missing the point and tend to get a bit obsessive. So reminding people that there is a world outside the train, a world full of things like pizza, is actually important! Because the only pure transit experience would be Snowpiercer, and I don't think you would like the dining options there!

Always a good day when I get the miles in transit upload notification!

I took this train in coach almost 13 years ago, albeit in the opposite direction. I really enjoyed it, though that was before I did the Zephyr or Builder (or the Canadian). Speaking of which, the Canadian actually shares a few things in common with the Sunset Limited - in addition to its train numbers (1/2), it too has lots of padding. Though it’s on a whole different level - there are multiple stops scheduled for over an hour, and sometimes you get even more. That’s because the freight delays are so long and unpredictable - it actually used to be 3 nights and is now 4 with the padding. I got 3 hr in Jasper on my last trip! Looking forward to seeing the videos from LA Union Station and San Diego/Tijuana - used to live in SD myself. Definitely hope you try the Canadian sometime, but go for at least a berth - 4 days in coach sounds like torture, and you miss out on the dining car/Park car…

Wow, this honestly might be my favorite trip report so far!

I am very disappointed in Jackson for not making a joke about Pee-wee Herman's bike being in the basement of the Alamo.

As we’ve seen from miles’ food choices, he’s probably on some watchlist. If he ever goes to Japan, idk how he’ll react to anything there

Not a Boomer but grateful all the same for the Bread reference.

Jackson, you're too young to be making Dad jokes.

I took the Sunset Limited last year doing the full route to New Orleans and we ended up getting stuck in Alpine, TX for about 5 hours because of a freight derailment. It got to the point where the train got so delayed after that the crew ran out of time and the train went out of service in San Antonio and amtrak had to do coach buses for everyone from there. I guess because the train schedule is so padded that even with all of that we still got into New Orleans on time with the bus. No one else on the train had seen this kind of schedule interrupt for the route before where amtrak had to bus us, but because its single track for a good section of the route there was nothing our train could do.

I’m unable to watch the video. Where the embedded video should be in Patreon, it says “Sign in to confirm you’re not a bot. This helps protect our community. Learn more.” and there’s no way to get past it.

Yeah, Maricopa is always a painfully long stop. 1 for the crew change, another for the first sleeper, 1-2 for the coaches and another for the last sleeper. I believe that the Beaumont-Houston-San Antonio trio is the only time there are 3 back to back (regularly available) fresh air breaks on the entire Amtrak network.

When I took the Sunset Limited eastbound we were on or ahead of schedule the entire time and then once it became the Texas Eagle we were an hour delayed by the time we got to Fort Worth. I also thought it was really funny when I got a "Welcome to Mexico" test from AT&T.

Just wanted to say I'm glad I'm not alone in eating tomatoes like that. I add a teeny bit of salt to each one though!

Finally got around to watching this. Very enjoyable. Along with the dust devils as previously mentioned, the industry in Louisiana is all petrochemical factories. You also went through my town, Palm Springs CA, which may not be the least used station in California but is definitely the one that closes the most; last June it was closed over two weeks due to sandstorms along the interstate.
