As one of about four people total who would regularly board in East Lansing to head back to Flint for the weekend I loved having a car to myself lol

DOESN'T HAVE NARRATION OR EXPERTISE...

Not only is East Lansing the 3rd busiest station in Michigan, it’s also the 8th most traveled to station from Chicago in total! More people go to/from East Lansing from Chicago on the 2 Blue Water trains per day than Carbondale with its 6 trains per day, Galesburg with its 8, or Kalamazoo with its 10!

The Milwaukee sticker suggests your Horizon coach is used routinely on the Hiawatha. Did either of your seatback pockets also have the MKE Airport "Now Boarding" magazine? Those sometimes stocked on Hiawatha trains, though I've seen one appear on somebody's Lincoln Service trip report to STL.

This train (and the VIA train from Sarnia we’ll see on your next video) did used to operate as a single train called the International from Chicago-Toronto (with Amtrak crews replaced by VIA crews at the border, much like the Maple Leaf). The cross-border service was discontinued in 2004 due to increased border delays after 9/11, with the current Blue Water and VIA services replacing them. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_(Amtrak_train) Amtrak/VIA are in discussions to resume cross-border Chicago-Toronto service, but it would be via Detroit/Windsor, with passengers changing physical trains and doing customs both ways in Windsor. https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2025/02/25/detroit-toronto-rail-windsor-mdot-2028/79473989007/

Miles, while I love the cafe car content, I'm perfectly fine with you getting a salad to eat so you don't have to eat a huge chunk of stale, unsalted bread on the train.

Food review with side of trainception at Porter Jct edit !!* Enjoyed this video.

I can't believe the International lasted that long! That makes it feel so much more doable to bring it back...the Detroit-Windsor routing would be funny if only because it would be a FOURTH Amtrak border crossing done in a completely bespoke way.

Blue Water is what we service airplane lavatories with.

I rode it to Chicago and back. LONG TRIP, but an interesting ride with the Superliners. Highlight was seeing a Ford Trimotor above us near Kalamazoo!

14:35 "classic old-school Otis" why doesn't this get a *foamer meter*?

I have some opinions to share on the subject of Train Food. One thing I believe about food, and this is pretty obvious, is the better something is when it is fresh, the worse it will be when it is not fresh---either because it was prepared fresh, and then got old, or because it was imitation fresh with preserved ingredients. So something like a sandwich that is great when served fresh is going to become either a soggy gross mess (especially if shoved into a backpack), or is just going to be a stale imitation of the real thing. A lot of well meaning people have told me that when I am travelling on a train or bus I should make some elaborate meal and pack it in tupperware, and bring fresh fruit. And the thing about that is, best case scenario I get some food that is "almost" a real meal, worst case scenario is a mushy apple gets smashed against my socks and underwear at the bottom of my bag. Also, I am pretty good with dried and preserved food for a trip. Even if it is a two day trip, I am not going to get scurvy on the California Zephyr. A box of wheat thins and some cheese slices are fine. Thank you for reading the proceeding essay! :)
