[EARLY] Riding Oregon City's Space-Age Municipal Elevator

I'm bringing out my inner Tom Scott (What On Earth Is This? Luke O'Sullivan?) for this one as I continue to be not on the continent. How did you get there? Orange line to the 33 or the 35 all the way?

Matthew Harris

I was curious about this as well, because presumably this was taken during the West Coast trip, so if he came here after the OHSU Aerial Tram video, he could have taken both ways...but I am trying to figure out the timeline for that.

Matthew Harris

You missed mentioning another way to get to Oregon City: the Amtrak Cascades has a stop there, two times a day, in both directions. It is one of the local stops (along with Tukwila, south of Seattle) that is served by the Amtrak Cascades but not by the Coast Starlight. It is not exactly an efficient way to get there, but it is very cheap ($2 from Portland, making it one of the cheapest rides in the Amtrak system, and a slightly more expensive $8 ride from Salem).

There's only one municipal elevator in the US?! Québec City has a whole network of them

Matthew Harris

On a very specific note, Oregon City is also (more or less) the southmost town that can be reached on Trimet. But south of Oregon City there are lots of little rural bus routes connecting the suburbs, exurbs, and small towns of the Willamette Valley. I think that exurban areas in Oregon might have a friendlier view of transit than in other places, because for people with the time and inclination, you can get to a lot of places! But going from Oregon City to Molalla by public transit is a very specific transit adventure.

It's great seeing you find your way to places in the Pacific Northwest that aren't in California. Nothing against California, but I'm sure there must be transit in places other than California that aren't Portland or Seattle. At least I hope so.

I thought that whole flying saucer looking thing was the elevator. I was immensely disappointed with the actual elevator.

Breanna Fairchild

This was originally built when the biggest employer in town was a paper mill across the river, une that used the flowing water of Willamette Falls as it's worse of power. A big obstacle for some of them commuting home after crossing that bridge that Miles pointed out was climbing the hill back home. Therefore, the elevator really was what passed for commuter transit back when it was built.

Hey, I noticed when I watched this one on YouTube that your channel is getting dangerously close to reaching 100,000 subscribers! Yay! I hope you have a big party in Phily or New York or something when you cross the line! That's so awesome to see.

Can't wait to click. The trip to MA's least populated town really restored my sanity today.

This was great! Loved the elevator. And the “secret” atm manufacturer at the end.
