The Dad Crew is back with The Peach Pit! This week they sit down to talk about the first episode of The Peachyville Horror -- they get into Will's DM preparation for the new show, the appeal of the Call of Cthulhu system, Will's original concept for season three, and how the first antagonist of the season became Mothman.

Plus, they answer some questions from listeners, including formative horror movie experiences, everyone's season three character inspiration, and other campaigns they would like to play together someday.

The wonderful children's RPG "Amazing Tales" is basically Matt's Platonic idea of an RPG: You select 4 skills of your choice, assign a die to each, and you're good to go. Rolling 3 or more is a success, below is a success with a complication. I'm playing it with my 5-year old, and we have invented stories in a plethora of scenarios (sci-fi, pirate, fairy tales), and have even successfully adapted parts of the DnD module "The Wild Beyond The Witchlight". While the system is supposedly "simplified for kids", I honestly think that it contains everything an RPG needs.

To me, the joy of trying out other systems comes exactly from using those "annoying complications" around the dice rolls in creative ways. I want to figure out the coolest way to play within the rough guidelines of a system. What's a new and interesting way I can use the Unseen Servant spell? What feats make the most sense for my character in this specific setting? Idk I mean the way they play is essentially that they simply play a story and roll dice to see if they manage certain things and that's fun (I mean I am a Patreon, obviously I enjoy them.) but many people actually do use and enjoy the more specific mechanics and almost more boardgame-y aspects that come along with some ttrpg systems xD

Completely disagree with Matt on RPGs but I can see why he has the view he does and is right for their playstyle. When I tell people about the pod I don't call it a dnd podcast I call it fantasy improv because they use dnd on a very surface level. But if you play RPGs and like mechanics and the restrictions that brings, rpg systems are very different oh also sleepy Hollow fucked me up as a kid. I had my first existential crisis and broke down crying freaking about not wanting to die. It was just me and my dad and he was not prepared to handle that lol

The best TTRPG's have rules and mechanics that enforce the setting and themes of the RPG. Dread has a legally distinct from Jenga tower that literally builds tension as the story progresses and actions make it less stable. The Modiphius Star Treck game has a mechanic that rewards the crew everytime someone succeeds at a task with a pool of resources, so it encourages the crew to work in there specialty (conveniently color coded, thanks Star Treck) to succeed as the best Starfleet has to offer. Apocalypse World is a gritty post-apocalyptic world, so the dice mechanics are weighted toward success but at a cost. But yes there are a lot of generic systems out there too, but that's why I personally like to find ones that lean into the setting/tone.

I second this - agree about it being both problematic and an awesome concept for a game. The other game this brought to mind is "Better Angels" by Greg Stolze. You play a superhero/supervillain with powers begotten by a demon, and each person ALSO plays the demon for the person next to them. Probably too crunchy for this group, but has a similar dynamic to what Beth was asking for.

I've been thinking for years that it would be so tight to watch like a tv mini-series just about life in the Shire (sort of similar to things like From Lark Rise to Candleford), where all of the conflict is centered around rural life and everyday complications. The only movie I could think about influencing my life is Mars Attacks!!! It messed me up SO bad when I was young! It’s instilled a serious fear of aliens. When my brother and I were like 5 and 6, we started watching it on TV one night, and didn't get past someone getting their finger bit off.. we popped Oliver and company into the vcr so quick after that. In my head I know it's not as scary as we thought, but I have yet to revisit it all these years later
