The Dad Crew sits down to talk about the latest episode of season three! They get into Will's plans for the interrogations, whether or not Tony is an actual undercover communist, and Beth's emotional journey with Trudy's big reveal.

I figured Tony was not a communist, just that Penny thought Tony was her replacement, because of how hard the cop came down on him, and how hard he was sure it was him But Tony, paying taxes, and the FBI having no record is really funny. But I’m also confused because wooden therapy paperwork for Tony in the military unless his neighbor was right and implying that he didn’t go into the military, and if he was right then what was Tony beforehand ? Especially since that’s character is a robot, now I’m very confused.

This episode, to me, highlights the difference between Anthony and Will’s GM’ing styles. Anthony ran D&D like a game designer, and Will runs Cthulhu like a screenwriter. I think it’s very interesting to get to see the show from such different perspectives. Edit: I think both of them are fantastic at running both games, and it’s fitting that Anthony and Will’s strengths show through in two TTRPG’s that reflect them. D&D is a lot more “gamey” than Cthulhu, which relies more on improvisation from the players and the Keeper alike.

I can recommend the book 'Alone Together: why we expect more from technology than from eachother' for anyone interested in human/robot social dynamics. It's so interesting and left me with a similar bias as Matt due to how eager humans are to project connection and affection onto any apparatus that vaguely appears alive.

Reminds me of the Pop Culture Detective essay where he pointed out that one of the only female coded Droids in Star Wars (L3-37) was immediately painted as ridiculous and over the top and as not to be taken seriously. The whole episode is interesting, talking about how inconsistent Star Wars is with when their droids are supposed to be human-like and when they are just machines.

I understand not empathizing with real life robots. Who gives a shit if some metal that moves gets hurt or destroyed. But to not care in a fictional setting is wild. Like it depends on the story. Not even the property but the actual story. In Star Wars I didn’t really care about the robot in Solo dying, but I thought K2 in Rogue One was touching. Saying you can’t connect with a character because of what they are at it’s base is wild. You aren’t meeting the character or the story on its terms and are applying some weird logic to get around that.

That's what I'm most excited for this season, Trudy is so interesting to me. To see this topic explored is so interesting, and especially in a setting where misogyny is far more overt. I really think Trudy might become my favorite character in media in general. I can just see so clearly the thought, care, and love put into her from Beth, and it comes together so perfectly. Love the robot reveal. I guessed it because trudy reminds me of 7 of 9 except with socialization in the 50s. As a person who gets stuck on words a lot, those gliches were also a very good clue (as in they were very close to just a natrually ditzy person with no social awareness.... and it's so very human but also very off. If I lose thoughts frequently I try and socially cover for them... trudy doesn't therefore she seemed more robotic to me but it was only because of the frequency and repeated verbal glich. Same type of error solved in the same way each time... humans aren't that consistent). But I also was uncertain because being robotic could have been an acting choice and some commentary on women in the 50s. As in trudy had internalized all societal expectations so hard that it broke her and now she has a very deeply ingrained mask of what she thinks everyone wants. ... and maybe her secret was she runs a small crime network on the side. Or she could have just been an autistic woman in the 50s. There were options but robot made the most sense and I can't wait to see where her story goes!

beth, i hope you don’t feel too bad about people guessing the robot thing. i did pick up on it almost first thing, but then when you kept dropping clues it still didn’t feel obvious at all. when i heard “charged with battery” my first thought was honestly that you might have been reading people’s theories and were being mysterious on purpose, because it still could have had lots of other explanations. i loved it. finding out she really WAS a robot was so fun. i also loved what you said about female robots being portrayed as objects for the use of/enjoyment of men. i love having a stepford wife character in a cosmic horror story set in the 50s specifically for that reason. i’ve honestly been looking for horror movies that capture the same vibe, because i can’t get enough! it’s something i relate to and i’m loving exploring the fear. i love trudy, and if anyone has any similar horror recommendations i would love to hear!

As someone who picks up on movie stuff really well I was surprised that I did not pick up on the robot thing. I thought she was hiding stuff well but I thought she was lobotomised or something creepy going on and not robots. I felt stupid because of course robot, the husband is an inventor it made sense. But my god the scene of him chucking her into the pit with all the other robots I was loving this was so creepy!

I feel like if this had actually been a movie, maybe it would've been more obvious depending on how the actors moved and came across in these scenes, but here, I too completely did not expect any sort of twist with Beth's character. Thought she was just being Beth, I mean, Ron was a weird fucking character too. In fact, I would've guessed Ron was a robot before Trudy.

Only 6 hours, but it's the greatest looking game ever made, plus the psychological aspect of it is still on par with my favorite game ever, Senua's Sacrifice . . I, really like video games. Also, I'm not a fan of gacha games, but Honkai: Star Rail is pretty incredible. A robot told me my mom's an antiquety.

Now I wanna know how Freddie’s friend would feel watching a wuxia drama where more often than not the actors are dubbed over by VAs even when they’re speaking the same language. Like would he notice that that’s not Wang Yibo’s voice speaking as Lan Wangji?? Would it tear him out of the story??? (I tend to think Mandarin-speaking VAs have a peculiarly difficult job in that they’re basically doing ADR for an entire fucking show and if you don’t know that going in/aren’t looking for it then it’s incredibly convincing to watch. Such a subtle and difficult skill)
