Every character managed to shine in what could have been a choppy (split party) episode. Excellent DM'ing from Will to give room for the players to thrash around but it's definitely time to raise the stakes. I really hope Tony doesn't though because Freddy is cracking me up this season. Maybe Ebby White will swoop in?

So there's an add on to Call of Cthulhu called Pulp Cthulhu, which makes the game a little pulpier and beefs up the PC's a little. In Pulp, your characters get the option to sacrifice ALL of their luck, in order to avoid certain death. You do need to have at least 30 points of luck to do it. Your character shows up later, with 1HP and a wild story, but alive. Could be an idea in a show where we wanna hold on to our fave characters a little longer. Especially since the tone is quite pulpy anyway with the mothman and robots, etc.

Your critiques assume a lot of things about these people and their decisions. I think the first point I'll make is that DMing is difficult, and that Will is doing a fantastic job. I cannot really see how he is railroading besides maybe the Francis flashback, but even then, the difference between that memory and what Francis ended up doing is still very interesting! We don't know a lot about Francis, we still don't know what he would've been interviewed about the prior episode, and I wonder if that potentially ties in with his decisions this episode. I also get that Anthony didn't want to roleplay last episode, but both mechanically and in the character's eyes, it made sense to keep put until something changed in his environment. For him to get some kind of advantage. And it's another thing to call these people unprofessional while they're playing a ttrpg. It's a game! I understand you're paying money to listen, but you wouldn't have even known to call them out on anything if it hadn't been mentioned. They all listen back to the episodes, they don't need to be checked in at every moment at the table. And if it is a problem, then they can handle it without strangers on the internet calling them out for it when they've already called themselves/each other out as friends. Will is getting his footing in this world and characters, let him be! He does not need people breathing down his neck about how he's "having issues" despite running a very fun game his players are clearly enjoying! I think there are legitimate criticisms to be made about this season, as I believe there are legitimate criticisms to be made with any media, but there are more kind and more productive ways to do it than this. This just reeks of passive aggressiveness masked as "criticism". And if that's not what you were going for, I'm sorry. But please be aware of how your words come off online, and don't say anything you wouldn't say to these people irl. It's insane that people think they have authority over online performers because they've put themselves out there. No one has the right to call out performers for mundane issues other than themselves and their loved ones. There's a big difference between criticizing media and criticizing people, and that's the case here. We the audience do not know these people and have no say over their decisions.

I think you’re taking all of this way too seriously. They’re a group of friends sitting around playing a game. They’re all interested in and work within the domain of storytelling, character development, and world building, but they’re still just five people who have known each other for a long time (most of them for over a decade) who are having fun pursuing a creative opportunity. They work to create a good product, but part of the appeal is that they’re funny people with good chemistry who don’t take themselves or even the game systems too seriously. Now, is Will as good at managing a bunch of maniacs as Anthony is? No, or at least not yet. Part of that may be personality, but I think another part is that, from my perspective, Will approaches his role as someone writing a story—which involves total control of every element—while Anthony approaches it as someone creating/playing an open world video game. I’m also only a woman, and one who’s never played any of these types of games at that, but I bet if Will can start conceptualizing the role of DM a little bit differently, he’ll be able to let go and let the narrative breathe a little more along the way.

(Assuming the children aren't also skinbots, but I have my doubts. Except maybe the smallest one, it's weird she keeps specifying 2.5 children.) DM here! I'm actually gonna push back this a bit. Here's my perspective, which could be, and probably is completely totally wrong! The way I see it, DND is, at it's core a collaborative storytelling engine, but it is also just as much a collaborative storytelling game - aka winners and losers. A good DM is a sort of antagonist who wants to be defeated, but not without a good fight. Nobody likes a sicko who just drops rocks a kills everyone. Since the players are supposed to prevail over the DM, I believe that derailing the DM's plans in a way that gives you an easier time, like what Matt and Anthony did is actually good DND. (Francis could have easily been killed by Sven and Tor if he confronted them alone, and Kelsey gained an information advantage by hiding under her house and listening for information.) On the other hand, derailment just for the sake of derailment can be pretty easily punished, like what we saw with Freddy. His drunken amnesia he decided to have didn't help him at all, (in fact it was so funny in part BECAUSE it made the situation so much worse), and he may have legit died because of it. But hey, that's just theory Thank you for listening to my TED talk 😁

From my limited TTRPG experience, it ends up that way more or less with groups of the same people that switch DMs. In addition, the previous DM becomes the most unhinged character (murder hobo type that looks for any way to derail the campaign)
