Content

The Dad Crew sits down to talk through the latest episode of season three! They bust out their newly-named Pick of the Week segment and get into the chaos element that Beth brought to the flashback, anticipation for the upcoming "Punished Tony" arc, and what inspired Will to give Francis a sniper rifle.

Also the 20 minute delay before the opening credits in the first season of The OA. She starts telling her Russian backstory and then you see Netflix presents . . Still gives me chills and I knew this was going to be one of my favorite shows.

First I agree with Matt-anti robot, theology / philosophy. As far as does the robot have a soul if brain, then humanculas rules. She can be the OG Trudi and have a soul or fraction of a soul, thus sentient. Can the fraction be so low that I don't cry? Yes. Judaic-christan theology wise she might be more pure/holy then us[sentient life], if her flesh is without sin.

One of my favorite TV opening credits was for Weeds were the started having different artist do covers of the "Little Boxes" theme song in different musical genres. Just the contrast of styles but the song staying the same about the conformity of the suburbs.

I think the intro for Peacemaker is also a too tier intro. I also really like the X-men 97 intro; I think it changes every week to reflect the episode. And that music is iconic to me. I agree with Matt on his out look on robots. I feel represented.

As somebody who drove semi trucks in my 20’s I would just like to say that there are very few blind spots in the mirrors other than directly behind. Matt is not the first person to have that idea of using a truck for privacy and I can attest that you are blocked from everybody except the truck driver.

I think that the Talos Principle (1 and 2) actually make you accept that AI are conscious as a premise of the setting, as opposed to arguing for its validity. I've just recently been writing about these games, so I'll share some thoughts: Your character in the Talos Principle is an AI, and you're seeing through it's eyes with your human consciousness as a real person playing a video game. But in order to have any narrative buy-in and immersion in the world, you have to suspend your disbelief that the AI character you are playing as is itself conscious as well; you recast "your consciousness as a player" as "the AI's consciousness as a character." This is just a part of the process of buying in to the world of the story. But the game then goes forward to advance the argument that a sufficiently complex AI would be conscious in real life, as if it were a forgone conclusion, and from there to conclude that materialist metaphysics is true. All on the basis of something you had to accept *without argument* at the beginning, just as part of suspending your disbelief to get invested in the story and characters.It's actually pretty sneaky! To popcorn off of Matt: It's like making Finding Nemo and having the audience suspend their disbelief in talking fish in order to become invested in the story, but then the message of the story starts to imply to the audience conclusions such as "fish talk, and therefore have human intelligence, and therefore should have the rights of human citizens," with the seriousness of points meant to be taken as real-life philosophical positions, as opposed to thinks only being argued for in-fiction.
