Okay damn since nobody else has apparently heard of it, I knew exactly what Matt was talking about- I honestly think I've heard of it in a couple of different fairytales I read as a kid: evil stepmother or gremlin etc tasks young girl with separating like... flour and sawdust. I can't remember the exact powders, it definitely wasn't salt and pepper. It's supposed to be an impossible task- I remember one version where she works at it until the sun goes down and it's too dark to see, and then she has to differentiate it by taste (not sure how that works lmao) - and then she's crying and some ants take pity on her and solve it for her and the step gremlin is shocked to find 2 perfect piles in the morning

It's a well-known trope -- TV Tropes has a whole page on it, filed (fittingly) under "Impossible Task", with "Sorting a huge pile of grains and lentils in a single night (if you helped a wounded bird or ant earlier, it will call its friends to help you)" as a classical example of the trope. There seems to be not one recorded instance of the things having to be separated are salt and pepper, though. (But I never went to Sunday school, so what do I know.)

Totally unlocked a memory for me, I also did numbers 1-6 for the UK lotto and got and UNIMAGINABLE amount of heat for the cashier from picking those numbers (I was 8, my mum was with me). But get this, I won a tenner! I sat opposite that booth after school for DAYS waiting for her ugly mauve died hair and bad lipstick to come back on shift so I could claim my ticket. I absolutely love how Will gets confidently every animal wrong in "Where's My Hat" (which is as fantastic as he says). Also, as a dad that was inspired by Will to try the dumb phone lifestyle, I can say with confidence that the best option might be a Unihertz phone: fully functioning, fast smartphones with the latest version of android, all apps that you need, but so freakin' tiny that you don't use them just for fun.

For a good children's book I'd recommend Bea Wolf (a retelling of Beowulf for kids) by Zach Weinersmith. I also like The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Thing Beneath the Bed by Patrick Rothfus, but it's really more for adults than for children.

If you’re on iOS, you can use the Screen Time restrictions to block Safari & the App Store. Then you can still have access to essential apps like Maps and Banking stuff, but eliminate all the social media apps and your web browser. Highly recommend if you wanna go halfway toward a dumb phone.

It’s baffled me how the lesson Hollywood seemed to take from the “women only get cast as one-dimensional love interests” complaint was to remove love stories from blockbusters entirely. One of my biggest issues with the MCU was that they are completely romance-less. We want romance! Love stories are great! It’s the “one-dimensional” part of the equation that’s the problem. Give women roles. Make us fully-realized characters with plot agency. Give us more story functions than just falling in love or being a macguffin. Lastly, let us write more movies, dagnabbit.

I LOVE the dumb phone life! I deleted all social media apps from my phone, and if I need something in particular from an app, I have to go over to my desktop to go to my browser and look. It’s very annoying. I even put my phone on silent mode for hours during the day. I did this “for a week” to get a palette cleanser and that was 4 years ago. Just do it for a day or two. Even that is refreshing. Edit: I still have a new iPhone. I use it for my email, texts, normal stuff, etc. I am a stay at home mom with two young kids, it’s possible.

what really irritates me about people who dislike marvel is when they say no one should enjoy them. Beth and Freddy are welcome to dislike Deadpool and Wolverine and any other Marvel movie they want, people are allowed to have different tastes. don't say that people aren't allowed to like them though. not all marvel movies are great yeah but a lot of them are fun and there is no franchise that exists where every single film or episode is amazing constantly.

Idk what it says about me that i loved "scary stories to tell in the dark" like I rented it from the library often in elementary school. We did have a German childrens book called "Der Struwwelpeter" and some of those stories freaked me out. especially the story where the boy gets his thumbs cut off.

Absolutely this, but also “nic cage being nic cage” is hardly even a criticism. Cage’s wild performance almost always caters to the absurdity of the film and makes it 10x better. My favorite example of this is Color Out of Space.
