I always loved how nuanced the character of Gerald is in this film. Obviously Stellan Skarsgard plays him perfectly, but I love that his is the kind of character who, in a lesser screenplay, would just be a hissable villain. And while there are plenty of ugly sides to him (the quintessential lecherous professor, after all) his investment in Will is genuine, and his quarrel with Williams' Sean is more of a fight between two worried co-parents. They're two sides of what Will needed; he needed Sean to heal the damaged part of his heart, but he also needed Gerald to take his talent seriously and to move the wheels of the system in his favour and give him the opportunity to have that healing take place. I absolutely love a complex character occupying a role that I'm so used to being rote and boring. That's what separates Damon and Affleck's script from other wannabe talents in their position.

An absolutely wonderful film. You mentioned the park bench scene and also the “It’s not your fault” scene as being pivotal moments, 100% correct. But I think where Sean earned Will’s respect the most was when Sean warned him not to disrespect his wife again. That was just the show of strength he needed in order to allow him to ever consider listening to what he had to say. And…”My boy is wicked smaht.” and “How do you like them apples.” are two phrases I use quite frequently :) So glad you enjoyed this. It is one of my all time favorites

Spot on and couldn't have summed it up better myself! There was a level a nuance there that I really think a second viewing would help me see even more of!
