Sam is based on a animated short by the director that he made many years ago. Its called Seasons Greetings. Then he decided to use inspiration from that short to lay the foundation and adapt it into an anthology movie. To which he later then made into a graphic comic.

You should check out its trailer (one of the best to ever do it). When this trailer came out, the horror community was pretty much collectively besides ourselves. Then, it had been quite a while since we'd gotten a big, grand Halloween-themed film. We were counting the days until its release. Then, Warner Bros. pulled the movie, shelved it and it languished for a couple of years in release limbo before eventually being unceremoniously dumped onto DVD. They got cold feet over the number of dead children in the movie. Years later, it has come as far as it has into the mainstream (the yearly merch at Spirit Halloween is pretty insane) due solely to word of mouth. Trick R Treat and Krampus are supposed to be in the same movie universe according to the creators. There was a deleted scene in Krampus that shows Max giving out his old Halloween candy and he has the same pumpkin suckers as Sam.

It's so nice to get a fun horror that is proper Halloween vibes. It's surprising that more aren't set on Halloween, to be honest. I only saw this for the first time a couple of Halloweens ago and it immediately put me in the holiday spirit. Glad you enjoyed!
