Each of the Lords in this story represents a particular ideology. Oidecalla has lost faith in trying to deliberately change the world. Like his gardens, he believes the world is best left untended and wild, and that ambition for change is just exhausting; he wants a "return to innocence"
Looking back on Avalon's speech on page 1, you might understand where he learned this ideology
Oidecalla on life and death:
"Nothing CAN be lost. Everything will be REMADE, endlessly. There is no finale, no glorious end. Only fading embers, transfigured into a thousand shapes. We shall sit by the dimming fire of creation for as long as we can feel its warmth. And as darkness and firmament gave way to light and greenery, the end of this world will be a slope back into gentle darkness. The purpose of life is to meet that end with gratitude for our fleeting pleasures, for there is no virtue in suffering for something that cannot last.”
Oidecalla on strength:
"Nature is innocent, because it has no knowledge of good and evil, nor the ability to comprehend either. Innocent strength is its own justification, but the burden of conscious choice inflicts us all with guilt."
