As if the hints weren't enough, the reader should be clear on Tony's desires at this point: he's uncertain and uncomfortable with college, and he's feeling a desire to sink back into "how things used to be".

It’s a tough time in life, people aren’t generally prepared for change or taught how it works, he’s very sympathetic, I think everyone goes through a bout of that at least once. Very sweet and incisive writing!
