The final battle is greatly enhanced made even better in the movie and that is the best part to watch out of the movies. There are a bunch of OVAs with one of them being a short one showing Lordgenome rise and fall that is pretty good.

After watching Gurren Lagann I would recommend the movie PROMARE, which was made by the same people with music from Hiroyuki Sawano. It's basically the insanity of Gurren Lagann condensed into a movie and it has even "Kamina" as the main character.

no, Tengen Toppa was not actually the size of a galaxy, the whole ending fight took place in a pocket dimension created by the Anti Spirals not the actual universe. granted though it was big, likely the size of the sun at most going by the size of the anti spiral hand that was reaching for earth.

Brother let me tell you. Gundam thunderbolt is two movies. Both are barely 90 minutes. You wont regret it.

if you do watch the movies you really only need the last like 15 minutes. because the final fight in the OVA is fucking peak masculinity man., I think one of the reason Simon steps away is because hes trying to prevent the spiral nemesis from happening. Dudes absorbed so much spiral energy he was basically god like at that point and could have revived everyone if he wanted but didn't want to set an example of unchecked spiral power usage which would endanger the universe. Basically guy set the stage for the spiral races to dominate the universe became on par with God himself and stepped away giving up the power to set an example and prevent the spiral power from going out of control triggering the spiral nemesis. Truly one of the best Tragic heroes of all time. just remember lord genome who was no where near as powerful as simon could create life and give people immortality. Simon literally choosing to just live a normal life span and die is wild.

Funny how it’s a mech anime but some how it feels more then that I understand if you don’t like mech in general but this series transcends that it’s more about the characters ideology’s and so much more then a guy in a robot it’s one of the few anime’s in my opinion that feels completely finished a perfect ending no loops or cliff hangers and you wondering what’s happening next it’s something like you said every avid anime watcher should at least watch once and I love that you gave it a shot nick despite not really liking mech and appreciate your open mindedness about it love the trip with you and rewatching my favorite anime of all time and going down this path again

Gurren Lagann is definitely one of those shows that just changes your whole perspective on life tbh. Like, it's downright inspirational. I will always recommend it to people with the hope that it gives them the same kind of motivation and strength for life that it did me when I first watched it. 100/10 experience.
