It might seem obvious to us that Kakyoin's message was that DIO could stop time. But Joseph had maybe a few seconds to figure it out while he had to think of how to escape from the fangs of DIO at the same time. Plus he just saw his friend die, give him some slack

Now, that you know Dio stand can stop time, then remember stairs scene, when Dio just for giggles, must have stopped time just to bring Polnareff a few steps down, then he probably ran where he started. All while giggling like a little girl.
