THIS is the screw up they make.  This isn't all of it, or it isn't obvious how this creates a mess yet.

I thought they'd lose faith quickly after failing to alter the first big event, and they'd start giving up... until they start noticing they did change the future.

Tabitha is the key in some ways.  Just getting her instead of Victoria made a number of events happen differently.
