ABSOLUTELY. BRILLIANT.

This is the moment I have been worried would come, and it was even more brutal then I expected! There is some great acting here in what feels like the biggest episode of the season so far!

LOVED the twist with Ben and Glory! Definitely didn't see that aspect coming! XD

I feel I go in a bit hard on Willow and Xander 'guilting' Buffy into telling them about Dawn, but it does make sense that she does this now. I just wish they would all learn to not discuss her while in the HOUSE with her! XD

Great scene with Buffy and Spike. Does feel like a major moment for Buffy, not being able to blame him for 'doing the right thing' for Dawn.

Loved it! So, so good! (Also I make a great 'twist' joke at one point I am very proud of)

This is a pivotal episode, giving us answers to many of our questions, and finally, everybody knows about the Key's identity (except, thankfully, Glory herself, though she seems to be getting closer), so it is all out in the open and the plot takes a giant step forward. No, I don't think minions are paid. Minions were paid by Groo in Despicable Me, but I highly doubt Glory is so generous. Jinx is my favorite of them; I don't why there is something so....grotesquely and weirdly loveable about these ugly little demons. Though I do take issue with the fact that when we *first* saw them, prowling around the hospital, they had forked serpent tongues and didn't speak in normal human voices, and that has completely changed without explanation. IRL, I assume it had something to do with maybe the actors having difficulty actually speaking with the tongue prosthetic. For the fictional Buffyverse, I just chalk it up to Glory herself altering the minions to suit her needs, giving them human tongues and the ability to speak our languages.

I love this episode and I feel very protective about Dawn. I don't have much patience for people who hate Dawn and complain she's too whiny. Besides all the other shit that a 14 year old girl has to deal with to find out you were created only 6 months before I think she deals incredibly well. It's amazing she doesn't go out of her mind with this knowledge.

The forked tongue ones weren’t her minions, they were the group she recruited to kill the slayer that Tara accidentally turned invisible. Glory’s minions spoke the whole time.

Demi-god doesn't mean demon god, it means half-god- a lower deity, or a mortal who's been raised to divinity, etc. Brilliant episode, and great memory about 'if you cut me do I not bleed '- I didn't remember that being in earlier Buffy at all. It's fun watching the series again knowing the twist, as you say, with Ben in changing rooms and such XD

Yeah, I can never remember the species name, but to my half-deaf ears, it sounds like Lay-off demon. As in what Spike says in the episode Family, when they come into the magic shop and no one can see them because of Tara's spell. (Using the name as I hear it) "Lay-off demons. Big with the marrow sucking." Whereas I don't think the demons who serve as Glory's minions are ever given a species name, only individual names for some, like Jinx.

My brain pedantically remembering BTVS things for 20 years even though they are unimportant: 🎶here I come to save the day🎶 The demons in “Family” are called “layach” demons, pronounced “lay” as in “she lay in bed” and “ach” like “aww” with a “k” at the end.

I'm the same way. Especially people who, every time she opens her mouth, they're telling her to disappear. It's like, we're not stupid. We get it. You don't like her. Move the hell on. LOL

I just paused the reaction to make a comment on something, Veggie, because if I wait until the reaction is done, I'll forget. While I understand your point, and I understand why Buffy didn't initially tell the rest of the Scoobies about Dawn, I also understand and agree that now is the time to tell them. If they're going to help protect the Key, they can't do that very well if they don't know what it is. It's also harder to protect themselves properly if they don't have all the facts, or at least all the facts Buffy has. It isn't realistic for them to just trust Buffy to do all the work because she can't be there with them all the time, and if they don't know what Glory is looking for, or who her target is, it creates a weakness in the group. I hope that makes sense. To me, it no longer makes sense that they're in this blind.

Now that I'm finished the whole reaction... Don't worry about repeating yourself, Veggie. Season 5 is my favorite season, so it gives me a huge happy to see how much you're loving it so far. When I first saw this episode, I didn't like it as much as some of the others. I'm not sure why. It wasn't because of Dawn, I like her. Now, I love this one though.

As much I really don't like Dawn (again, a lot has to do with the actress), she really pulled the cart in this episode. Her existential crises to realizing she's not really a human was pretty well done. She and Spike's spitting truth were the highlights, for sure. The gang did need to know, too. They were going to be tasked for protecting the key, so they really did need to know what was actually going on. We're getting ready to move almost across the country (2300 miles) in a month, so these reactions are going to get me through the craziness of getting everything ready. Thanks, Veggie.

Loved this reaction, Veggie. I do have to say it’s refreshing to see someone so empathetic and attached to Dawn. As someone who has been a fan of this show since it was airing, the vitriol this character and actor received and still receives to this day is mind boggling. People really hate teenage girls, and this character brought out horrific behavior from people for years. It’s better now than it was, but I still have to roll my eyes at the way some people respond to her, even in 2024. You start talking about playing video games at the end there, so I have to jump in because my current hyperfixation is Baldur’s Gate 3 & now I’m wondering if you have or plan to play it at all.

What is it you don't like about the actress, Hannell? I'm not asking this to be disagreeable or pick a fight, but because I'm genuinely curious. I only know of Michelle Tractenberg (sp? Too lazy to look it up) from this show, and I've heard people say they don't like the actress before, but never with any context. I know she was in Harriet the Spy, but I've never seen the film, and that's the only other thing I'm aware of her from besides Buffy.

I feel soooo silly that even with the Family episode, I did not realize those were two different species in league with Glory. I guess it's a great thing about this series that even after 15+ viewings, new things can still be learned!

I don't think it's that people hate teenage girls, all the characters are teenagers for most of the show's run. It's more that she is just annoying, the show leaned too hard into the annoying kid sister aspect., the writing made her annoying.

I just haven't ever liked her. I loved Harriet the Spy but didn't like the actress in it. I didn't like her in this show, and I really didn't like her in Gossip Girl. Harriet the Spy was during my childhood, so that fact that I really didn't like her probably just stuck with me and has been too ingrained in me. It also could be that I didn't like the character of Harriet and associated the actress too much with the character.

After 20 years, I truly have no interest in debating the finer aspects of why “it’s ok to hate on Dawn, actually.” Respectfully, I think you are wrong & have no interest in expending the energy it would take to break down exactly why for you. If this is as mature a view as you are capable of having, I see no point.

Huh. How interesting. I don't love Dawn, but I like her well enough, and I love the wrinkles she brings to the storyline. Isn't it funny how things just hit different people different ways? And isn't it super strange how an actor playing a role you don't like (assuming that does in fact have anything to do with the reason you don't like Michelle) can cause a person to not like the actor even outside of said role? That happened to me with Billy Zane. I watched the movie Titanic (warning: spoilers for Titanic if you've never seen it), and Billy Zane's portrayal of Cal was the first time I saw him on screen. Cal was so horrible to Rose, and Billy Zane played him so well that I hated the actor for a long time after, to the point where I couldn't watch him in anything else without my blood boiling for a long time. The spell finally broke when I saw him in the movie The Phantom years later, where the character was so nice and heroic that I stopped seeing the actor as a misogynistic, abusive buttwipe. LOL

It's not that odd for me because I have a very strong loyalty personality. If I like something, I'll basically always like it outside of something horrible happening so that I morally can't support it anymore, and the same goes for strongly disliking something. There's a Taiwanese actor that I absolutely can't stand and almost gave up on a really great show the second I heard his voice. With Michelle Trachtenberg, the three roles I mentioned are kind of "annoying" characters, too, which doesn't help any. I think with Dawn, if they had written the character as more of a teenage girl, she wouldn't have been as hard for people to like. Someone mentioned that they wrote her as something like an eleven-year-old and didn't change the character when older Michelle was given the role, and, if true, that was a horrible decision.

Everyone was acting weird around Dawn after Buffy told them the truth, but to be fair, Buffy also acted weird around her (remember how overprotective she was) when she first found out. If there's anyone to get mad at, it's Giles for writing such detailed notes about the key, not encrypting them in any way, and leaving them in the Magic Box where Glory could have easily found them if she ever decided to ransack the place.

I do have a youtube link to the score that you like when Dawn was at the playground, but its youtube so you know how that can be with spoilery thumbnails around of other Buffy content and I wouldn't want to risk it. It's an unreleased score from composer Thomas Wanker. Doesn't have a name to my knowledge. As for the episode, one of my favorites and definitely underrated by the fandom I'd say.

Yeah, apparently that is true. And you're right, it was stupid of them not to change the character accordingly when they chose Michelle for the role. If they wanted her, fine, but they should have adjusted the character to fit her age.

I’m ill so I’ll keep it brief lol. Spike and Dawn being besties is one of my fav things from this episode. I agree that something shifted between Buffy and Spike in this episode and she seemed to be really confiding in him, taking comfort in his words and being vulnerable with each other. It’s kind of crazy to think of that change after everything that’s happened so far, is that the legacy of their quiet consolation at the end of fool for love? I don’t know. Dawn hurting herself is so distinct in my mind from this episode that I actually forgot the hospital part was in this episode and not one of the following ones!! I almost thought it was near the end for some reason. I’m not sure when the right time to tell the scoobies was but I don’t think it could go much longer. I won’t say too much about it but there’s a theory that the monks changing this reality to fit Dawn into it created some sort of disturbance and brought Dracula into the Buffy canon. It was out of nowhere as there was no indication of his existence before then, he appeared to be a myth until the beginning of season 5, coinciding with the reveal of Dawn’s character at the end of the episode. Lol. I’m not saying that’s what I think but it is very interesting. There’s more to it but I’ll expand later when relevant!

If I'm not mistaken, the name of the score is "The Confession". I think it first played when Buffy was telling Giles that she needed him to be her watcher again in the first episode of this season.

some context on buffy ages- each buffy season is one school year (except for season 1, which is only the spring semester of a school year, reflecting the season's shortness). in between each season the summer happens. though, we see the end of summer in the season 5 opener when the scoobies hang out at the beach. buffy's birthday is in early january and she was 16 in season 1 (already had her birthday.) then each season we have a birthday for her. in season 2 she turns 17, where she has a birthday party get cut short by the judge's arm and loses her virginity. in season 3 she turns 18, gets stood up by her father for the ice show, then giles and the counsel conduct the test every slayer gets at 18. in season 4 she turns 19 and simply gets a nice birthday bash at the dorm, though she does get a giles is missing scare that same episode. then we have this season, where she turns 20!

Man, you got me three times with the amazing twist joke. :) The first time when you said it about the memory block, because I knew what was coming. The second time when you made the actual joke, because we both said it together. :) Third time when you declared your pride in it. This is a good episode but it was so much BETTER as a reaction, thanks for the fun time.

When these episodes were airing, a lot of people were very hard on Dawn. But if I were a 14 year old who just realized I'm not real and none of my memories ever happened, I'd raise absolute hell and be a giant ball of angst. So anyone who wants to be critical of Dawn needs to cut her a freaking break and think how they wouldve acted or felt in her shoes.

I love this episode, too. Michelle Trachtenburg's acting is amazing, especially for her age. Yeah people hate on Dawn too much, but she's only a kid. Also the bit about xander where you thought he was lying well, but then changed your mind - He tickles Dawn, which actually might be xander trying to physically touch her to make sure she's actually real, because of the shock news he's just had about her. Could be an interesting idea xx

What an episode! I really like Dawn and while I hate the emotional trauma she had to go through this episode I'm really glad that now she knows what's happening :)
