My... GOD, I hate Ted!! Very good villain to what is a very creepy episode!

I feel like I picked up on a few clues early on, but my GOODNESS that twist got me good! XD

Love the stuff with Jenny and Rupert.  Honestly, theirs is one of my favourite story arks at the moment.

Also lovely to see more of the mother here! Feels like it has been a while!

Captain & Tenille were two people, an American pop rock (?) duo back in the 1970s. I never listened to them myself and have no idea if I've even heard any of their songs, as my older siblings didn't have their records. I'm actually a little surprised they were referenced in a 1990s show, as they weren't really a household name by then. I don't think so? They were famous in their own era, though. Likely Xander and Willow knew of them through their parents.

I’m pretty sure you’re right. I knew who they were in the 90s only because my mom had one of their songs on an oldies compilation disc. Never would have known otherwise. It’s one of those groups that has a couple of well known things… like if you hear a bit of one, you’re like “oh yeah, I know that song…” but that’s about it.

Hey Veggie, I have to strongly disagree with your disagreement with Buffy. "Self defence" does not give you the right to beat the crap out of someone, just because they hit you first. Buffy had the power. She could have tried to immobilise him, instead she used it as an excuse to wail on him ( i.e. she says "I was so hoping you would do that"). Her actions were in revenge, not self defence. Sorry - I didn't mean to get so preachy - I absolutely loved the video, and I can't wait for more. I guess your comment just struck a nerve.

Honestly Garry, you make a fantastic point. I would say my judgement of the situation is probably clouded by the fact this is brand new to me and I frickin' hate manipulation like which is portrayed in this episode. Also it isn't like Buffy was 100% in control from the second she snapped (Ted knocked her to the ground even after her quip). Also, I don't know if this is me being unintentionally bias, but I don't like the idea of a grown man slapping a teenager like this. Definitely need to address this in my next intro, having time to process what exactly happened. That being said... he turned out to be a robot, so in a way I was right! XD ( ONLY JOKING!!)

Hi guys! Seeing some excellent comments about if what Buffy did was right or not when it came to beating on Ted. This is definitely something we will discuss at the start of the next ep! Honestly, I think as this is the first time I saw this episode and it is all very raw to me, I may have misjudged my comments on what was right and wrong. To be honest, the manipulation and gaslighting definitely got to me, so my inital take on what Buffy did my have been clouded. Love the fact this show can make us think about these things on such a deeper level! Great episode and great villain!

I 100% agree with you about the grown man slapping the teenager, that was despicable. I think Buffy just lost her temper and things got out of control. Honestly if the episode had ended with that twist it would have been great. The fact that Joss Whedon switches it up again at the end, it's like he's toying with your emotions!

Yes, you totally spotted the food thing immediately. But then you've always been super observant. It's part of why it's so fun to watch your reactions. Captain & Tennille were an American pop duo from the 1970s. I'm not sure Willow and Xander were old enough to be that familiar with them, but the show's writers would have been. Buffy's mother is Joyce, When this originally aired, I wasn't much older than the characters. So I mostly knew John Ritter (RIP) as a very goofy comedian from sitcoms and silly movie comedies. (He apparently had solid dramatic roles as well, but in movies I was never allowed to watch, so I didn't realize.) Anyway, as you can imagine, I was so very creeped out to see him as Ted. It was jarring. And I'm with you brother. Xander and Cordelia's animosity in Season 2 was very much of the "pulling the pigtails of the girl you like" sort. Xander, particularly, is immature enough that it was clear to me there was something there... 7.5/10 episode for me

Yea, watching this as a kid around the actors ages, I definitely didn't know who they were talking about until I looked it up, but then again, my parents didn't listen to them, so that's why. I agree with RavenLord that Xander and Willow probably learned about the band from their parents.

Totally understandable! I appreciate your outrage at the manipulation and gaslighting. They are definitely some of the most infuriating elements of this episode.

You can make a note of the fashion that Buffy wears here. Whenever she feels she is in the wrong or feels small she tends to wear clthes that are more childlike, like the blue suspender pants after Teds death. It shows how inside she sometimes still feels like a little girl that doesn't know how the world works

Yes, Buffy _does_ deserve to fight back, but what ted did did not fall under killable offense. If Buffy would be able to decide that her killing one human didn't matter in the grand scheme, she wouldn't be buffy. If any other woman had done this, it would still be treate as manslaughter. It may have been justified, it may have been an accident, but the end result is a dead humen (usually) and a court of law cannot and must not overlook that. Manslaughter isn't the same as murder and there would be possible mitigating circumstances, but right now, the police is treating this as a possible homicide and that is their right.

I don't think you were that far off though, Veggie. Ted "died" from falling down the stairs during the fight, not from Buffy bludgeoning him to death or anything. Also, she might be the slayer, but she is still a minor and that matters quite a bit in this instance imo. Not saying she, as the slayer, have a right to kill or assault people but imo some are giving way too much weight to her "I so hoped you'd do that" comment.

I always forget how interesting this episode is! It's a tricky situation morally. Buffy absolutely had the right to defend herself. Regardless of her slayer powers, she has the right to that. But like the others were saying later, she can't be above the law. Once the situation moved beyond self defense, she has to pull back. And I think it's a very forgivable offense in this case to go too far given the circumstances (Ted threatened her, manipulated and gaslit and drugged her friends and family, and then actually hit her. Hard to blame her for lashing out), but forgivable doesn't necessarily mean right. She could have stopped attacking and restrained him or otherwise incapacitated him. Forgiveness is a big theme this season and we're seeing it with Giles and Jenny this episode too. There's also the fact that Buffy, while she did intentionally hurt Ted, did not mean to kill him. Intention matters, context matters, and I think it's also important to note that the villain of this episode was a robot who did not consider those things. It was an accident that she killed him, but she still did, and the fact that she is willing to take responsibility for her actions leading up to the accident speaks very highly of her.

I liked your comments, personally. Ted was heinous and clearly never met a woman who could fight back. Killing someone in self-defense is not acceptable under the law, but (1) this is a TV show with vampires in it and (2) we are still, in 2023, struggling mightily to adequately address domestic violence. So I am more ready than some to cut Buffy a lot of slack here.

On a separate note, this episode is fun on re-watching, because you notice some hints are given throughout. Like Ted saying “I’m not wired that way”, or his work colleague calling him a “machine”.

At the start i realized dood def was feeding people pot cookies/edibles. You picked up on him being a bot welllll before i even thought about it. Dude gave willow electronics super fast too. That episode aged pretty friggen well

Killing someone in self-defense is acceptable under the law though. They just have to be actively trying to kill you, not just fighting you.

"Psychologists use the term “gaslighting” to refer to a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is trying to get someone else (or a group of people) to question their own reality, memory or perceptions." how does this qualify? when did Ted try to get anyone to "question their own reality...."? yes, there was manipulation and i would classify it as an abusive relationship. not all manipulation is gaslighting. i find the term gaslighting being over used and it lesions the severity in peoples minds when they hear a bout a case of real gaslighting. sorry for the rant.
