The new and extremely popular new member of the Asano family was looking rather shell-shocked. Jason extracted Nik from the clutches of Hana and Jace, taking him to a quiet corner of the balcony.

“Well?”

“It’s… I don’t know. It’s a lot.”

“I know. You shouldn’t expect to just wander in and have some inherent connection to everyone. Get to know them. Let them get to know you, once they’re past the cuteness that makes everyone want to hug you and put you in a series of adorable costumes.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Dad…”

“What?” Jason asked with unconvincing innocence.

“Have you come into possession of a series of novelty hats?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s about time I brought the team in to introduce them to everyone. That should take the pressure off you a little.”

“You may wish to hold off on that, Mr Asano,” Shade said from Jason’s shadow. “The Australians have finally noticed their missing officials.”

***

“This is so good,” Josh mumbled around a spoonful of gelato.

He was standing outside the gelato shop with Sue, Solomon and the Concierge.

“It is quite palatable,” Solomon was forced to concede.

“It just occurred to me,” Sue said, “that we didn’t tell anyone where we went. Asano just kind of swept in and it all got strange from there. You don’t think that’s going to cause any problems, do you?

***

In the offices of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet was a conference room. The three government officials meant to be in that room were not, the open portal at one end of the room the obvious reason for their absence. If the trio had been having a more normal day, the kind that didn’t involve visiting an alien world in an alternate reality with a wizard, they might have done things differently. Told someone where they were going, for example, or running for the hills. Some days, however, are just so out of the norm that you end up going with the flow, only to later wonder what you were thinking.

The security force currently crammed into the conference room were already wondering what the trio had been thinking. A full squad of silver-rankers had been deployed, all equipped with magically enhanced tactical armour and firearms. They waited on a gold-ranker to portal in from the artefact city and lead them through.

What they found on the other side was a warehouse-scale space, with floor, ceiling and three of the walls made of unadorned metal panels. The last wall was a single, humungous pane of glass, looking out onto a planet.

“Are we in orbit?” asked Garnett, the squad’s silver-rank leader.

“Not just orbit,” said Lu, a gold ranker liaising from the Chinese government. “That isn’t Earth.”

Garnett looked again and saw that Lu was right. The planet did look like their big blue marble, but the continents were wrong.

“Where the hell are we?” he asked. “Some kind of space station? A spaceship? We have gravity. Is it from rotation, magic or some kind of alien science?”

“Figuring that out is why we’re here,” Lu said. “Where we are, and what Asano did to our people.”

He turned from the window to give the room a more thorough examination. The panels making up the walls were large, each several metres across. There were doors in each of the non-window walls, including one set that were warehouse-sized, large enough to let massive freight pass through.

“Some kind of warehouse?” he postulated. “A loading bay?”

“Maybe a security room?” Garnett suggested. “There could be recessed weapons behind some of these panels.”

“I was tempted,” Jason said, and the squad wheeled to level their guns at him. He was standing in the middle of the room, dressed like a tourist with his hands in his pockets. He looked at the guns with a sigh.

“Really?” he asked. “Have you guys not seen a movie? When one guy is standing casually while a bunch of SWAT-looking guys point guns at him, those guns definitely aren’t going to work. Look, let’s just skip ahead. You blokes shoot me and we’ll see how it goes.”

“Hold your fire,” Garnett ordered his squad. He glanced at Lu, the only one of them without tactical gear or a gun. He was wearing plain black fatigues that looked simple but had more powerful magic flowing through them than the tactical gear.

“Asano, where are we?” Garnett asked.

“On a space station in my personal universe.”

“Your personal universe?”

“Yeah. I don’t have time to go into the details, but it’s very small, by universe standards. Just the one solar system. That’s the main planet out there, smack bang in the goldilocks zone. Some of the others are habitable, if a little more exotic. I had to do some odd things to make that work, depending on their distance from the sun.”

“You say that we’re on a space station, in some private universe,” Garnett said. “Even with magic, it seems a lot more likely that it’s all a ruse. The air and gravity feel like we’re in a room on Earth, not in orbit around it. For all I know, that window is just a high-definition screen and that portal brought us to a warehouse in the middle of Geelong.”

Jason blinked surprise, then erupted into laughter.

“Oh, I totally wish I’d done that, now. I like you, Mr Garnett, so I’m not going to be to harsh on you and your lads.”

“We’re well versed in your methodology, Mr Asano,” Lu said. “You like to use absurdity to confuse and distract. That will not work here.”

The grin that crossed Jason’s face would have put the Chesire Cat to shame.

“Funny you should say that. In your world, you’d probably be right. But this is my world, Mr Lu, and you have no concept of how absurd it can get. Gentlemen, I told you to shoot me.”

Every finger resting on a trigger squeezed, sending a single bullet shooting out of each gun. The bullets stopped in the air, then each one floated into front of the person that fired it, hovering in front of their head. The bullets grew cartoon faces and started yelling.

“Were you even listening, idiot? Do you realise how expensive we are, and you’re just flinging us at some guy who turned us into cartoon characters! We’re going back in our guns now, and nobody better fire any more of us until you’re back where you belong.”

The bullets then returned to the barrels, some of them growing arms to flip off their shooters on the way. For a long moment, everyone was frozen. Then one of the security personnel threw their gun away as if it had tried to bite him. That triggered reactions from the others, staring at their guns or likewise tossing them to the ground. One actually looked down the barrel of his loaded firearm, getting him yelled at by Garnett. Only the unarmed Lu was unflinching, his expression calm and his eyes locked on Jason.

“Your universe,” Lu said.

“Yep.”

“You’re powerful, here. Controlling our perception of reality.”

“I could, yeah, but it’s easier to just change reality. The only things not mine to command in this place are your souls. As for your bodies, I could turn them into pots of water and cook lobsters in you.”

“You claim to be a god?”

Jason’s chuckle sounded every bit like light-hearted amusement, yet every other person in the room felt a chill run down their spine. The security team, still looking shell-shocked, snapped their attention onto Jason.

“I’m nothing so limited as a god, Mr Lu, but you can consider me such, if it helps. I understand the challenge of coming to grips with power on a scale beyond anything you considered possible. I once perceived the entirety of the cosmos. It was for an infinitesimally small time, beyond the ability to measure, yet even with the power I have in this place, just the revelation of it almost destroyed me.”

He smiled at Lu.

“Even now, you doubt me,” Jason continued. “Perhaps it’s all an illusion. Maybe we really are in a warehouse in Geelong. Mr Lu, in your world, I’m just a gold ranker, not unlike yourself. A powerful one, with powerful friends. But in this place, everything answers to me. Even physics.”

“So you say.”

“What do you want to see, Mr Lu? To feel? To be? What will it take to convince you? You want me to turn off the sun? I’ll have to warn the people on the planet, so they don’t start a religion or something, but I can do that.”

“Why do you even want to convince me? What do you get out of it? If you have this kind of power, what can I possibly offer you?”

“If I convince you, you’ll convince at least some of the leaders of Earth. Some won’t listen, of course, but you’re a man of influence. Of power.”

“That’s a laughable assertion in this place.”

“But you won’t be in this place. Hopefully helping world leaders understand what I have here. Because, if they do, they’ll understand why I have no ambitions on displacing them.”

He gestured at the window.

“What would be the point of seeking power on Earth when I have this?”

“To some people,” Lu said, “it doesn’t matter what they have, or how much of it. They always want the next thing, If only because someone else has it already.”

Jason sighed and nodded his acknowledgement.

“I can’t argue with that, Mr Lu.”

Lu turned to look at the planet through the window.

“Is this where it leads?” he asked. “This path of magic? Is there no limit?”

“I don’t know. The cosmos is vast beyond what any mortal mind can encapsulate, believe me. Most immortal minds as well. I’m not sure if a true limit to someone’s potential exists, but we each have our own roadblocks. For you, the monster cores you used to get to gold rank make you unlikely to go further. But nothing is impossible.”

The stoic Lu’s shoulders slumped.

“It’s easy to feel large, when you have power,” he said. “The truth is, I’m so very small, aren’t I?”

“We all are,” Jason said. “I have my own universe and I’ve sat on the throne of creation, yet I’m nothing but a speck. But that’s part of why it’s all so amazing. No matter how far you go, there’s always a new horizon. I don’t know if the people of Earth realise this, Mr Lu, but I’m immortal. Properly immortal. If you kill this gold-rank body, I’ll just make another, right here. I’m going to live forever, but I’ll never run out of hills to climb. Don’t think of yourself as small, Mr Lu. Think about the cosmos as a place of infinite potential.”

“Perhaps for the younger generation. Those that did not use monster cores to raise themselves.”

“That’s a tough one, I’ll grant you. But as I said, nothing is impossible. Right now, there’s a war going on in the other world. It’s over a relic that I’m told can, amongst many other things, purge the residual monster cores from people. Give them a fresh chance to advance. I’m not saying that you or I will ever get our hands on this relic, but my experience is that’s nothing is truly impossible. Just very, very infeasible.”

Lu walked over to the giant window, past the security squad who were watching their discussion with uncertainty. The gold ranker looked out at the planet below.

“You’re not lying, are you?” he asked softly. “About this place. The power you hold here.”

Jason walked over to stand beside him.

“No,” he said softly.

“Even if the cosmos is vast, we must seem so small to you.”

“Every seed is small, Mr Lu. That doesn’t mean it can’t become a mighty tree. I wasn’t going to talk about this yet, but one of my intentions in returning to Earth is to help it on the path forward. To prepare it for when other worlds come calling. I won’t lie, Mr Lu; the old guard, like you, have probably gone as far as you ever will. But some of those you will guide and teach will roam stars beyond stars. See wonders that even I have yet to encounter. You’re not the future, I’m sorry to say, but you are going to help build it.”

Lu looked from the planet to Jason and back to the planet.

“Can I go there? See it for myself?”

“Oh, absolutely. Your people are getting some gelato right now, we should get in on that.”

“Did you just say gelato?”

“Well, it’s not technically gelato.”

Don’t divide the chapters, forget the politics and let us enjoy the banter with Jason, his team, and his family

Unwillingmainer

He really needs to stop seducing Earth officials with space wizard gelato. Someone is going to get in trouble about it. And now that someone the Earth's leader have to listen too believes, the first crack in the wall of their understanding is made.

Gilgamiso

Ah yes, my favorite time of the day

Sean Beasle

Thank you for the early crack! You Florida people be safe

ByLAWphoto

Ty for understanding our addiction requires early access to our next hit!

Heather White

I love that he let them in. Because you know he could’ve blocked the portal if he’d wanted to. Time to f*k with the Earthlings, because most of those power-hungry leaders won’t, as they say, be able to handle the truth. But it’s going to be hard to ignore their own gold rankers. Eventually it’ll be a gold-ranked status symbol to have a cup from that gelato store.

Tim

Lmao, if my bullet flipped me off and climbed back into my gun I think Id probably line up a new profession...just saying, rofl.

Bingus McCready

Yes! We were about due for some proper flexing of cosmic muscle. This was a really fun one. TFTC!!!!

Jordan Rogers

Man I wish I could write even remotely this elegant.

Kenneth

That was a total Who Framed Roger Rabbit moment; and I am HERE for it. Awesome.

CipherFTW

BISCUITS

Razeel Nightfall

I stand by a mail box and wait for you to send me mail. Today I received a letter with just one word. "Uh". Tomorrow's tomorrow I hope the letter has a better word on it.

Martin Tomsic

Thank you for yet another stunning chapter!!!

Justin Butler

Sometimes you just go with the flow and wonder what you were doing later.

Mr IHHI

Wonder what combination would produce the ‘Toon’ confluence

Chris Furry

I think maybe you should wait to read chapters until you can read a bunch in a row, because when you look at this in context, this could turn out to be an incredibly important chapter. As Jason said Mr. Lu could help convince earth leaders that Jason doesn’t want to take over. That takes a lot of conflict out of his return to earth a hugely important concept.

samwise

Short chapter, but nice

Crystal Donak

The politics of Jason of talking to officials and not getting to any meat is getting annoying. I feels like two books worth of it.

Bru-

Time Zone change in Australia a very nice surprise.

BloodStorm

I love the daylight savings time schedule. That hour early is nice. Anyways I needed the flex of great cosmic power by Jason. I need more leaders of earth to get the tour and team biscuit to meet the family. There’s so much to do on earth.

BloodStorm

What is the chance the purity artifact is on earth? Maybe the old builder hid it there?

shawn B

Was this shorter chapter, or felt that way cause it was so entertaining?

Laura Hemly

And if you're in the U.S., it will go another hour earlier the first weekend in November. Which is truly lovely!

ItWasIDIO!!

Is this the Lu from earlier in transformation zone or someone new? if it is the same guy isn't he the one the thar blew one up & ran away screaming

Soli116

Poor Nik. He's too old to be forced to wear silly hats. Power to him if he wants to, but boo if he's coerced.

Mark Morrison

Great chapter. As much as I love the fights, I'm more looking forward to seeing how Jason and his team interact with the people of Earth in this Book.

ByLAWphoto

@Razeel--maybe one chapter at a time isn't for you. Maybe wait until the next book is out and read it all at once. I get that waiting is frustrating, but if all you got from that chapter is a literary pause, you may be better served by taking a break for a while.

mainiak

Now I have munchies and no gelato :-/ #TYFTC 🥰

Naotsugu97

Now I’m wondering the difference between ice cream and gelato! Deep thoughts… lol

Samuel Strode

This is like only champagne can come from champagne France but if it’s thicker then ice cream we are all going to call it gelato!

ByLAWphoto

I sympathize with Nik. No one should be liked just for their outside. ...and yet, I can't wait to see the hats!!!

Scott Martinis

This is probably the best way to introduce the earth to the rest of the cosmos peacefully

Laura Hemly

The thing is that Jason can tell Earth officials he's immortal and has his own universe till he's blue in the face and 95% of them won't believe him. That's why he's letting Lu see the universe and his power in action so HE can convince some of the Earth officials that he isn't a danger to them because he's immortal and has his own universe. Making this chapter a very important first step in convincing Earth officials that he's really, genuinely there to help Earth join the cosmos.

Scott McCarthy

It is only a matter of time till someone forces Nik to complain Roger Rabbit. Hopefully not EMI as I half expect that individual to cosplay Jessica...

Grant Whitehead

I think this may be one of, if not, my favorite chapters ever.

Laura Hemly

It's raining like someone is building an ark. And the wind hasn't even really flexed its muscle yet. I'm just VERY happy to have this chapter before our power goes out!

Justin

Great chapter, soon everyone will want to visit his universe! TYFTC!

Kevin Veldman

Whoa, an Earth Gold-Ranker not being an absolute asshat? Unheard of!

Laura Hemly

That's what I've been thinking all along. But nobody should tell the messengers -- there aren't enough people on Earth, even with the visiting gold rankers, properly able to fight off a messenger army! Jason could probably do it by himself but it would make his trip a pretty annoying visit, which he does NOT want.

batchickcr8zy

Truly great chapter! ❤️

Martin Tomsic

“I know. You shouldn’t expect to just wander in and have some inherent connection to everyone. Get to know them. Let them get to know you, once they’re past the cuteness that makes everyone want to hug you and put you in a series of adorable costumes.” “What?” “Nothing.” ----- I have to know. Was this already planned, or was it a reaction to the comment from @brian phillips last chapter saying that it would happen?

Jordan Rogers

I got bored at work today with no audiobook and came up with several new book ideas.

Martin Tomsic

TBF, he was virtually slapped with the hand of a god. I don't know that we can say whether he truly isn't an asshat, or just in a state of shock that knocked the asshat right out of him.

Feu et Glace

Sometimes I read a chapter and just go damn. That chapter was epic Shirt. Thanks.

batchickcr8zy

Where was the chapter title mentioned in the actual chapter? I didn’t notice the line in any of the conversations or descriptions.. :/

Martin Tomsic

The only way the Purity artefact could be on Earth is if the Founder and Noreth brought it with them. That would mean that Disguise and the Builder would have known as well.

Stephanie Washburn

This was a pretty good one, and finally didn't feel flippant about messing with those guys. It was an oddly and wonderfully compassionate way of trying to reach them. I like that for Jason.

ByLAWphoto

I did double check and it's not there. That does occasionally happen.

Martin Tomsic

Any chance of there being some kind of Painting or Drawing essences? And I think you'd need to have ritual magic knowledge in order to have an animated familiar be one of your powers.

DreadHawk666 Aron

Thank you for the chapter 😁! Light hearted doom is always gooood

Blake N.

Yeah, first time a title like that wasn’t a quote that I remember

Martin Tomsic

I think after the hot cocoa incident from the Earth arc, we should keep Colin away from deciding any of the gelato flavors.

Teddy Torres

If they did invade the Cult of the Phoenix would be aloud to act directly

Teddy Torres

Agreed. I told myself at the end of book 12 I wasn't going to read 13 until he comes back from Christmas break in January but it's just too damn good. This may be my favorite chapter EVER

Andrew Woodard

I love seeing this side of Jason. Building a better future.

Vincent Hill

Fantastic chapter!

Dalth

Gelato is made with milk, whereas ice cream is made with cream. Is a subtle difference. Then it’s churned slightly slower, which makes it a denser dessert than ice cream, because the slower churn speed introduces less air. It makes a massive difference in texture. I have also found that gelato is made from real fruits more often than ice cream, which has a big difference in the amounts of sugar needed. Also I’m pretty sure ice cream uses eggs and gelato does not. Don’t quote me on that last part.

Adam Yates

Jason can finally do what he has never been able to do before: take the time to properly explain and contextualize events to the people of Earth. He doesn't have to worry about them trying to steal his stuff, he's not lost and alone lacking context of his own, and he's not scrambling around trying to scotch-tape the world back together while dodging people a rank or more above him. It's great to see him have to opportunity to show character growth and explain to people what is happening :)

Johnathon Stout

Great chapter! I can't wait for a Belinda/Emi team up

ByLAWphoto

I don't think it can be. As I recall, Purity hid it before dissolving. Disguise took over and pretended to be Purity. But both are local gods to Palli. Seems to me, Knowledge told Jason that local gods have to stay put. I suppose it's possible that Purity could have given the artifact to someone else. But if Purity hid the artifact directly, it would have to remain on the planet.

Justin Edwards

A nice break from the hurricane, thanks Shirt!

Xiggurat

Not getting to any meat? We must be reading different books, or maybe we have very different ideas of what “meat” is, story-wise.

IllustriousIllusionist

Crazy what wisdom and experience can do to someone. Book 4-6 Jason would have never shown anyone on earth something like this

Yaldabaoth

Damn Fuckin Epic chapter, Shirt! Absolutely loved it! ❤️

Martin Tomsic

How long before Farrah gets Tina Turner there for some gelato? And now that I think about Tina Turner I realize that at some point in the future there may literally be a Rock god on Earth.

Joshua Stevens

I don't have any examples to hand, but I do remember it has happened a small handful of times

Justin Edwards

They've been replacing poles around here and it usually would have gone out by now. I just hope it flies by and we don't get flooded out.

Joanna

Found it: "Use all your well-learned politesse" is a line from the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil." Excellent!

Alex Schellenberg

My bet is the Purity relic is the mystery box the Jory took from the Reapers Astral space. His ability to identify it was blank. He had it on a shelf in a building sanctified by the Healer and I bet the second he takes it out of his dimensional pouch and put it on his dorm shelf in Jason's cloud house, Jason will know what it is. Or at least that it is something powerful.

Sean Beasle

You Florida people are built different. I’ll be praying for each of you. I hope yall have plenty of gas and water. I meant vodka my bad

Justin

Oh man. Imagine that shit? A hammer space power for spatial storage? Produces a wildly unlikely item for any situation, but it explodes cartoonishly after it’s used.

Joanna

It's almost always the case that a title that isn't in the chapter itself is a lyric from a song. I googled it: "Use all your well-learned politesse" is a line from the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil." I like the reference

Doodlyboy15

That was a nice way to end it, thanks

Michael Smalley

You have to love seeing Jason learn from his mistakes! He is making it very obvious that he is much beyond earth at this point. He has had trouble in the past conveying this point! Who thinks what the guild name for our band of misfits and friends will be? Personally I like the name "honey badgers" could be a great name! It's playful for one, and two the animal is scrappy like Jason and the team, they make choices they should not! (like eating venomous snakes)

Joanna

Ha! That would be hilarious. But sadly I'm pretty sure the timelines don't mesh

Joanna

Even better, the whole phrase in the song is "So if you meet me, have some courtesy Have some sympathy and some taste Use all your well-learned politesse Or I'll lay your soul to waste"

TimeDrawsNigh

I think this is the first chapter in a long time to not use the title somewhere in it.

ABTelford

This…❤️. This conversation is what I was wanting but didn’t know I wanted! ❤️❤️. SO well done!

Adrian

Aura seems more real to sipver and good rankers than their other senses. Jason must be entirely supressing his for his claims to be even remotely outlandish.

Adrian

With the Paper and Fire essences, you could have an Explosive Runes confluence!

Harbby

This was so good

Logan

Would Dawn then be Jessica Rabbit? I don't think there are too many women in this story with red hair.

Crystal Donak

It feels repetitive. And the is very little interactions with the main characters. I love the series . It feels very dragged out. Like Emi met Nik and no dialog between them and Jason and EMI finally reunit and once again no dialog...or barley. We haven't heard from Colin in I don't know how long. And Shade has faded into non existence. We just keep getting introductions and back stories of random people. I just miss the relationships.

Martin Tomsic

It is a big help that Jason can now do a "show and tell" to help people understand. When he had to explain everything without having much evidence to back his claims, it was hard to get through to them.

Scott McCarthy

Colin just needs to sample some flavored protein powders, let him experiment and he will get an idea how to make nit taste good.

Scott McCarthy

Who will they have to talk the Reaper into releasing for said Rock God? David Bowie Freddie Mercury Lemmy Hendrix ????

Martin Tomsic

I don't know, I think he would have if he had the chance. Isn't this the purest definition of "coming back to show them wonders"?

GentlemanG33k

Good chapter, looks to me like we are building to Jason working with the world to help it change. And now for something completely different. How have we never had an interaction between Shade and Stach I need to hear the oddly British shadow man say Mr. Velitraxistaach.

Scott McCarthy

@Martin I think all the Palamustus gods know where it is, based on Healers comments when he tells Jason about it, they just can not tell anyone.

ByLAWphoto

Not every day can be a war. And without context, we might as well say, "Jason met with Leader #7 and delivered his message. It was received. "

Martin Tomsic

There is a whole cast of characters that needs to be introduced because Jason has to start building all new relationships to keep the world from going crazy over his return. You can't just jump in and start without introducing people first.

Scott McCarthy

Ya, only Chen and Gerling survived the first, and Chen might have died due to stupidity from the 2nd.

pyrite jester

You're right timeline doesn't mesh several of the priests were from actual purity and not deception purity.

Samuel Strode

Cheese is still cheese even if it comes from cows goats or sheep it might be qualified as sheep milk cheese but it still tastes good

Martin Tomsic

I more see Rock as just looking like any of them that they feel like at the time. They may have to try making a deal with the Reaper though to be able to try channeling their spirits since Rock hadn't been around at the time they were alive to get to know them.

John Durrett

This is grandpa Jason fishing out wisdom. Take note, naysayers of Jason stubbornness. To everything time and a season.

Martin Tomsic

But Colin likes the taste of flesh and blood, so trying to get him to go with chocolate flavored protein probably won't go so well.

Timothy

Layne Stahley, Chris Cornell or Chester Bennington.

Scott McCarthy

Yup, the Purity priests Jason freed seemed to be pre-artifact, though that could have just been an excuse.

ByLAWphoto

A few have said this is their favorite chapter. I agree the context is important. I Realized why "the topic of pants" is one of my favorite chapters. It's the banter! I'm so proud of Jason for his personal growth. But I miss the trio of irreverent sidekicks.

Heather Jackson

I wonder if some of this is because they're in his Spirit realm and everyone says he's different in his Spirit realm he's calmer and seems to be able to explain things more

Joanna

When that happens, the title is almost always a song lyric instead, which is the case here

Martin Tomsic

Actually the timeline does work out. The Network Founder returned to Earth 500 years ago. And Jason said that Shade had been locked up for around (or just over maybe?) half a millennia. So that means that Real Purity would have already sanctioned themselves before the space was closed and (for whatever reason) had prearranged someone to take it into the astral space and hide it knowing that the space was about to be locked down. The priests that went into the astral space were pre-Disguise Purity, not necessarily pre-artefact. Purity could have timed it knowing the raid was about to happen. I just don't see it as a likely occurrence, though it would be funny.

Joanna

I'm pretty sure ice cream in general doesn't use eggs. French vanilla ice cream specifically uses egg, which is where it gets the yellow color

Allen Wilding

Every seed is small- deep thoughts and a great chapter

Joanna

Purity turned himself into the artifact, so he couldn't have been the one who hid it. Disguise is almost guaranteed to have had a hand in hiding it, imo, since he got in on the situation fast enough to swap in for Purity. And after all, the founder was a priest of Disguise, so... it makes sense to me that it's on Earth. Also helps explain why the hordes of messengers haven't found it on Pallimustus despite 15+ years of searching

Crystal Donak

I actually don't need it to be. It's just been all Jason and the random new characters. And the interactions, the teasing, the amazing chemistry between of long time friendship I just miss it.

Laura Hemly

What song? I don't think I know it. ETA: Never mind. I saw it elsewhere in the thread. Thanks!

Laura Hemly

We have underground power, @Justin, so we're often the last to go dark. Unfortunately, we're also last to get power back, so we'll see. We'll go stay with a friend out of the storm zone if it looks like a long outage after the storm.

Kalanaere

Kinda feel bad for Mr Lu. He's trying hard to cone to term's with his relatively low place on the totem pole of power and in the universe now. I can imagine how that makes him feel

3rdImpact

"It is not technically gelato" "It is not technically beef" seems like the dumplingverse is a great place for vegans xD Thanks for the chapter!

Chad .

I really enjoyed seeing Jason flex his power to do something absurd. I would like an entire book on Jason learning how to change reality in his kingdom. Like book 12.1

Laura Hemly

The one title that was in Spanish is another one that wasn't iun the chapter. Unless this series is translated to Spanish and it's in that version?

Heather White

“Dad…” “What?” Jason asked with unconvincing innocence. “Have you come into possession of a series of novelty hats?” “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Well, at the very least Jason has the embarrassing dad thing down pat.

Liesmith

Jason: "What would I need to do to prove my power to you?" Lu: "Make a trademarked Disney character appear and identify themselves verbally." Jason: "Literally impossible."

Heather White

“It is quite palatable,” Solomon was forced to concede. The response of all Earth politicians who discover that Jason isn’t the horrifying devil they’d expected… and now have no idea how to react.

Heather White

If your gelato is made from lizards’ milk, is it still gelato? And can I, someone allergic to dairy, eat it?

Heather White

At least he isn’t coming off as one of the crazy arrogant ones. They definitely won’t handle it as well as he does.

Heather White

I do appreciate Lu’s point that people are greedy. And I imagine that the greedier Earth politicians will plug their ears and “La La La La La La, I can’t hear you” their way through Jason’s show & tell.

Joanna

Good point. The statement is in the chapter, in English. Noreth says it, something about the good of the world being above all. “Yellow Bell” was the chapter title that threw me the hardest. I had no idea that Wang Chung meant anything

Nivyn

Still giggling about this chapter… lol

Brave Badger

An alien universe and still people would rather lizard pus over plant based milks

Joanna

Oh, wait, I’m thinking of a different one. The chapter title I mentioned is actually in Latin, near the end of book 6. You meant the one early in book 9 that’s in Spanish, when Jason is hunting the soon-to-be-ex-adventurers who think they’re hunting him. Something like “ the demon who makes trophies of men” was the translation I got of that one. I never thought to see if it was a lyric or quote from elsewhere

Heather Jackson

Can Jason make his own essence on his own planet? Or because that is somewhat controlled by the throne he can't or is it just the combinations the confluence that's controlled by the throne

Skalias Pablo

Man, the conversation with Jason and Mr. Lu here is possibly one of the greatest conversations in the entire series. I can't describe how much respect was instilled in me for the character of Mr. Lu at his reaction to the situation and how he became introspective and questioned not only his place in the universe but his way forward. As a seemingly important Gold Ranker on Earth it shows the strength of his character that he instantly saw and accepted his place as a speck in the wholeness of the cosmos. Knowing what we currently do about high rank advancement, I hope this mindset and revelation helps him reach Diamond.

Martin Tomsic

Of course there will still be politicians and egomaniacs like that on Earth. But I don't imagine that they will retain their power for long if they do that. Either their peers will just push them to irrelevance, or their supporters will pull them down.

Nick Remis

I’m waiting for Jason to go full dad mode and make up a batch of pancakes

BloodStorm

I think Mr North and the founder could’ve taken it to earth with them. We have no idea how long ago Disguise took over for Purity. I also think the messenger invasion on earth is the next big bad. If Palamustus is struggling then earth could be doomed. It could be the last big arc of the series

Gotrek65

Man all these chapters seem so good and so short when I reach the end. I just can't get enough!

Heather White

They expect him to be a murderhobo with plans to conquer Earth. Then they look out the not-at-all-eye-shaped window at his own personal planet below, “WTF?!”

Martin Tomsic

I'm really glad that Jason went with a soft touch on introducing the security team to his kingdom. --Books 1-3 Jason would have done some crazy outlandish things to try just messing with them and leave them all stirred up and more confused over everything. --Books 4-7 Jason would have just dropped his aura on them like a sledgehammer to show his power and make them see what he could do if he felt they pushed him to his breaking point. --But I think Book 11 Part II and Book 12 really took a lot of his edge off and forced him to really grow up and take a look at things. Obviously there is still a lot of the old him under there, but it's not like it was.

Tim

Hm, according to Greg Gaylord Focker, if it has a nipple, you can milk it. As to whether it would affect your allergies, thats a tough one. It would seem that most milk allergies are due to casein and several whey proteins. Casein is mostly found in mammal milk, mostly cows, less so in humans or sheep. The whey proteins are what breaks the milk down, and is used in the manufacture of cheese. So depending on your specific allergy and the biochemical makeup of the lizard milk, I would say that probably yes, you could eat the lizard gelato since gelato is more reliant on milk than cream which is mostly made from the milk's fats and it would seem to me that lizard milk would be way less fat intensive.

Tim

Its not early, its exactly on time. He posts on HIS time, which went BACK due to daylight savings in Australia.

Kconraw

That was the first time in a long time I felt the chapter was short. Don’t know if it was just that good or actually short. Thx for the chapter

StarkRG

Lizards don't have nipples, though. They're reptiles and nipples are an invention of mammals (and not all of them have nipples either, platypuses and Echidnas "sweat" their milk through pores in their belly skin which the puggles then lick up)

StarkRG

"I sat on the throne of creation." He also fought with and against many of the various pseudo-sapient mechanisms that keep the cosmos functioning. It's like dating gravity or having an argument with electromagnetism.

David White

He has the home video thing down, though we haven't seen as many dad jokes on screen from him lately - Jason would totally do terrible puns on purpose just to annoy Nik

Maudley

Wow I've been through this series a few times and still idr that box.

Alex Schellenberg

The generation that was alive when Purity sanctioned itself may have been the one to attack the Order of the Reaper. They would have known the original recipe but still be driven by deception to purge the Order but the relic may have been collected by the Order and kept in the Astral space as a safeguard.

Sean

By the end of this, Jason will have a cookout with the entire Australian government except for the PM.

Joanna

“Lizards don’t have nipples.” …But on Pallimustus they do! Cue egg frying shot

Andromeda Adams

Tyftc. I loved how this ended. I also can’t wait to see Jason’s family meet his team!

L.Goll

It would make sense. If Reality is at your whim, there is no need to stress over anyone

Austin Wolf

God this always makes me laugh. Can't wait to see Eri notice Zara and give Jason a bunch of guff

riley

Martin Tomsic

I just went back to check Book 2 Chapter 46: Mixed Medications about the box. It looks like the "mystery box" was taken by the leonids. ---- The leonids gave themselves first pick, but otherwise distributed the loot evenly. They found a magical box of unknown purpose, a magical staff that Jory claimed, some leather armguards, and no fewer than four awakening stones.

Justin Oliver

Damn good! Again and again!

Martin Tomsic

The Messengers can't invade Earth without an invitation from people on Earth. If they try then the World Phoenix will step in. Unless there is some loophole that we haven't been told about that would allow them to attack a closed universe. *On a side note: When Dawn had the meeting with the team but left Clive out, it was because he'd figure out what the danger to Jason and Earth would be (I thought). At the time nobody on the team knew about the Purity artefact or that the Messengers weren't there to aid Disguise in taking over the world. So I still don't think the Purity artefact is on Earth or that the Messengers will be the big crisis.

Taecharn Burt

I just love when Jason start showing his powers to the world

Martin Tomsic

@Heather - Jason can't make essences or awakening stones, yet. He most likely will be, but not for quite a long time. Fully transcendent is my guess, not just bare minimum diamond ranker.

Arieh Sochaczevski

I don’t understand Jason’s motivations here. This scene is kinda cruel to no benefit.

Kismet

Ooohhhh, I didn't know i needed this team up. Now that the idea is out there... please, please, please.

Tim

Listen man, Im just working with what the good Gods of Pallimustus is givin me here. I know its weird, but magic is like a roller coaster. A roller coaster of weird where lizards have nipples and the ice cream probably smells like snake skin and tastes like cold chicken.

Kismet

Okay, you writing paper & fire essences, I started wondering what would happen if you added rock essence to the mix. Sorry, the rochambeaux joke just got me. I'll see myself out.

Kismet

Are you implying Shirt is a wizard? I'm here for that.

Connor

I'm loving all of the recent chapters so much. It's great to see Jason truly taking on his role of a godlike figure, while still being himself.

3rdImpact

Good point. I am.not sure whether I you mean how nik is treated or how Jason treats the core users from earth. 1. I believe that might simply be an expression of Jason's melodramatic side. 2. It could also still be part of making a point to those in power and trying to emphasize the Gulf between any essence user on earth and Jason & Friends. Jason's past experience has shown that the people who have power on earth only listen to extreme disproportionate responses.

3rdImpact

I have to ask fishing out or dishing out? I am not a native speaker and might lack some knowledge on metaphors and idioms.

John Grizzly

told the guy what he was trying so hard to avoid, his limitations. but also that instead of giving up, he should instead look to the future and if he cant reach a higher potential, he can atleast raise people who might be able to achieve a higher potential. it is crushing his fake sense of security, but he also gives him something to hope for, to see know that he can still be a part of someones journey fort he future, instead of becoming jaded and instead ruining others future to compensate for his own lack of.

StarkRG

I agree, it's a harsh truth, but it's better than a lie. Jason them followed it up with solid advice for how he can move forward with his life productively rather than just let him flail in anger at the injustice of it all.

StarkRG

It's not impossible, it just requires intervention by powers more powerful than all the GABs combined: Cosmic Overlord Shirtaloon would have to hire lawyers to negotiate for the rights and pay to use the characters.

Shadowessence

I wonder if jason gets a chance to see how monster cores effect people or see the relic, if he could do the same thing in his space, like Carlos did with melody

William Martino

I feel that much of the mechanics of how advancement works in general will remain a mystery for worldbuilding reasons. There doesn't seem to be a good reason that he can't replicate monster cores like he can spirit coins, except that it utterly breaks the world that's been built to just instantly push anyone he wants to gold. Having a big backlog of cores is one thing, but an inf supply is another. Maybe they need reality energy to create, but that energy needs to remain scarce to keep jasons choices having consequence now that he's immortal (eg he could auto-farm the monsters that manifest in his domains for the power). I'm fine having the concept remain unexplored vs an attempt at a real reason that doesn't really make sense. I do think the question of _do essences manifest in new water_ needs to be addressed (and I hope the answer is no tbh).

Shadowessence

I agree, but because if it was possibly the astral king messengers would not be at war for it, but just food for thought, if he would have thought of it or wanted to try

Mitha

Damn I was confused. In german a Politesse is something like a meter maid or a traffic warden.

JonO

I think at some point a beef stock Gelato would be good, especially if Jason hosts a bunch of different species in his universe. For all we know he's working on a blood Gelato for the vampires he'll likely host there.

Mitha

Yeah, back when the priests got trapped, purity was still purity. The whole sanctioning stuff happened after.

JonO

Yup I honestly miss and look forward to a 5pm release.

JonO

I think Jason alluded to a much in book 11. I remember something about Jason mentioning many hugs and nik reminding him he's not a stuffed animal.

Bryan Jackson

Essences manifest in his spirit domains; why would they not manifest in his astral kingdom?

Shadowessence

I meant cleansing the monster core "taint" how the maguffin the messengers are searching for.

ErrebanRrereban

I thought it was because advancement is aligning the self to have better access to the power of the soul. Monster cores artificially accelerate the power gain so you end up with an atrophied, tainted body that is no longer able to properly connect to the soul. And as for jason auto farming, no point. He's reached the point where fighting no longer fives "XP". T diamond ranker lady mentioned it before going into the tunnel. The barrier to diamond is more to do with crystalline a path and understanding your own soul and having a coherent narrative of the self and how the essencess play in.

ErrebanRrereban

In cultivator terms, hes reached the consolidation stage prior to breakthrough. Boi needs to meditate lol

Zuzana Toulcová

I caaaaaaaaaan't wait to read how Jason introduces team Biscuit and his family to each other!! I just can't!! I so wonna know what will Emi say to Clive because I think they could like each other 🤪

someone

I think you could have monster cores along with essence need to form naturally with ambient manna (from needing free form or to complicated to understand by any astral king) and then just have a focus thing, he and all astral kings can only split there focus so many ways and pull in so much mana for there worlds that allows monster cores and essences while adding a limit and explaining why astral kings need new planets as each one even in there kingdom can only produce so many and Jason’s limit in split attention can be covered by for needing population until he is max diamond and proper king

Zuzana Toulcová

Interesting.. I kinda don't feel that it's cruel. I understand it I guess. .. What is cruel about it? You mean the thing that he as a monstercore user will probably never grow stronger? He can still get a looooooot better. Also pick up a profession. Lots of craft people gets to diamond rank even on cores and gold rankers live a long lives.. so.. please tell me what part is cruel? 🤔 I mean it. It's not supposed to be sarcastic...

Zuzana Toulcová

You're tottaly right StarkRG! And you made me laugh.. never thought about it like that... uuuu now I started to think about what they looked like and could do based on what you wrote 🤩

Daniel Wills

I think it’s mentioned that practically no one gets to Diamond rank on cores. It’s weird because they do say that there are more Diamond rank crafters than there are adventurers, and also many crafters use cores. But the crafters that reach Diamond never used cores.

Joanna

Lol, that would be confusing! In English it just means formal politeness

William Martino

Tbh if the goal is a totally self consistent world, then I think essences manifesting in his spirit domains a bug in the worldbuilding mechanism. Same goes for the monster cores that come from the monsters there. Easy to fix with a retcon of _only in dominated bita of reality do they manifest_. Otherwise, in the next several millenia it would make sense for him to figure out how to farm essences and cores (either by replication or making some optimized safari where people cant die in his universe). Maybe jason wouldn't, but some other AK would have and IMO the cosmos would look very different as the proceas would have been playing out for eons already (eg if the process isnt expensive to the ak then an exchange rate of 1 reality core for 1M eccences etc isnt crazy). This isn't a criticism of you or the world the book built, more a _there be rationalist fic dragons_ warning for trying to set down the mechanism too firmly as cannon and my happiness that its just not touched. Every process he can do needs to be assumed to have already been running infinitely already... Which is a crazy standard when figuring out his limits.

William Martino

I like the idea of focus being the finite resource, as a way to cover for _why doesnt he just essence and core everyone to gold_ problem (which north would have loved btw). Also the idea that one cant grok their production until transcendence with a hint that even after that theres a reason that mortals cant fathom to block it, is pretty great too as an out. Effectively, is a post-transcendence natural process.

William Martino

My farming comment was wrt if cores have reality energy then he can farm them for his prime avatar, not farming for his own advancement. But because cores can get one to gold, but its just expensive, and jason can print inf money, cores need to require something more for replication than raw magic. Otherwise, it's hard to grok why he doesn't immediately advance every core user he doesn't hate to gold.

Heather White

And then there will be Jazz, who often appears in the visage of Miles Davis.

Martin Tomsic

@Daniel Willis - It was never said that "practically no on gets to Diamond rank on cores." It was said that you can't advance beyond gold simply by using cores. Here is how I interpret things: All of the nobles that core up to gold use it as a crutch to get power and never take the time to meditate and be introspective enough to bring their bodies and souls into the balance necessary for reaching diamond. It's one of the reasons they tend to have negative personality traits as they rank up, from not being balanced with their essences. Crafters that use cores are still always focused on their craft and themselves, so they are still bringing their bodies and souls into alignment for diamond rank advancement. I think that the conversation between Akari and Amy during the Earth arc about core use points in this direction. Amy was frustrated over all of the core users in the Network passing her by because she wanted to do it "the right way" and go the core-free route that Jason and Farrah were teaching. Amy realizes that Akari is a core user and apologizes, but Akari isn't offended by it. Akari talks about balance and focus and self-awareness, or something along those lines. I wouldn't be surprised if this is just another one of those diamond rank secrets that are kept from the world of Palli to stop people from doing terrible experiments or ruin their rise through the ranks early by misunderstanding things. This may be a secret that even the diamond rankers keep to themselves and that nobody under diamond knows unless they have a diamond mentor specifically bringing them along.

Martin Tomsic

@3rdImpact - I believe they meant "dishing out". Jason was giving out wisdom to Mr. Lu and the other security force members, like serving them food. "Fishing out" would have meant that Jason was trying to get wisdom from them, like if he was fishing in a lake.

Martin Tomsic

@Kismet - I think that would be the Paper, Rock, and Sword essences. No Fire included with it.

Martin Tomsic

Thanks a lot, JonO. Now I have the image of Colin and Craig in a kitchen trying to figure out recipes for their "I Scream" brand of sanguine desserts. It's somewhere between Willy Wanka and the kitchen at the Vain estate from book 1.

Arieh Sochaczevski

I wasn’t referring to the bit about unlikely advancement. I mean the way Jason treated the security team. None of those people did anything antagonistic. It doesn’t even say they pointed their weapons at him. I get that he’s got a(n understandable) chip on his shoulder, but he’s rarely so rude to average people doing a non-objectionable job. Since when does Jason showboat this way to people who are no threat and not doing anything very wrong?

David White

They did point their weapons at him, though. Reasonable reaction, sure, but still. “I was tempted,” Jason said, and the squad wheeled to level their guns at him.

mainiak

The way I read it, Jason is very gentle and while Mr. Lu realizes the magnitude and could whisper with the hints of fear, despite that I feel hope. I would even say Jason is very humble and sincere. Mr. Lu might never ascend so high, but he is still needed ... like everyone is important (except other Gordon) and can contribute to help move Earth forward towards wider cosmos. I'm just waiting for the bomb to drop - like the artefact actually being on Earth and it unleashing multi-cosmos-wide war for the artifact. Paper boat in the middle of the ocean ... and storm is coming, that's how it feels.

mainiak

Off topic - Murderhobo series as audio books was quite good too. Except there was only one Cookie. (And lot of Uni.corns 😹)

Tell The TRUTH

That would be such great get back for the Clives's wife joke... I wonder if the age and rank gap will keep that from being a thing... maybe not tho because Jason and Dawn

TechB

It's the gelato. I've never even heard of someone being angry while eating gelato. Sol didn't come across as a psycho so (while eating gelato) he had to agree that there are good things in that world.

N8rtotPlayz

I see what your point is on world building. I think you’re forgetting something, essences manifest ing his domains on earth as a byproduct of the magic levels and density, same as for Earth and Palimustus. It’s also why monsters spawn. It’s a function of magic and consistent with the established lore. As I understand, it’s mostly inside the astral spaces. It would make sense if it also occurred in the domains, as a function of magic. Remember also that domains are what gods do, and we don’t really know, lore wise, what goes on in them except for in Jason’s. As for in his kingdom, magical beings like messengers can’t use essences. Yet they can be used in rituals and crafting. Therefore it stands to reason that astral kings use essences and stones as any other magical resource. It’s also established in earlier books, that astral kings exist in the hierarchy of the cosmos between gods and great astral beings. Meaning their power is vast. The question of wether they can manifest essences if a matter of knowledge. If they don’t know everything there is to know, then it falls apart when leaving the kingdom. Just like Dawn explained to Jason about spirit coins. At silver, he could make gold and diamond coins, but they lacked the true power to exist outside of Jason’s kingdom. He could however make the other coins, silver down to lesser spirit coins. Just because Jason has infinite money, doesn’t mean he spends hours making warehouses of spirit coins. He just doesn’t need to. As for awakening stones and essences, he can’t make them, yet. He will likely need a few decades or centuries before that happens. They’ll likely be system related, at least at first. That’s just my opinion and I may have missed a few points or forgotten important points.

Zuzana Toulcová

I know right. I mean, it's totaly crazy, but I'd root for them as hell!!🤪 It would be so cute and awkward and complicated... craaaaazyyyy 🤭🫢

Thomas Bell

I almost want clive to marry Emi as the ultimate punchline to jasons jokes about clives wife 🤣😂🤣😂

Thomas Bell

He forced them to pull the triggers, then had the bullets turn into cartoon caricatures. It's not cruel, he's demonstrating that in this place he is all powerful, showing that from a realistic perspective they are specks of dirt to him. Divorce yourself from the meta knowledge and look at it from an their perspective. Jason needs to show them that he exists in a world they can't even fathom, he needs to completely shatter their understanding of what is possible to even have a hope of convincing them of the reality. Someone who claims to be an alien can fly will be laughed at. The moment they prove they CAN fly it suddenly them being an alien is way more believable.

Philip Pleiss

The next few chapters might answer a personal theory I have always had: Wouldn't it be hilarious if Clive ended up in a relationship where Jason would get major ick from making the "Clive's Wife" jokes? I've had that little nugget running through my head for something like the last 7 books.

Maudley

Lmfao that'd be some wonderful karma Edit: hey wait a sec...

Kevin Veldman

Ian seems like a pretty open guy. Wonder if he and Erica and Clive would do a throuple thing

ABTelford

Oh my gosh now I want them to get together! Lol! Just for the jokes!! 😂😂

JonO

I whole heartedly approve of this nightmarish amalgamation of a dessert you have just presented martin. Thank you lol

Arieh Sochaczevski

He can cause the gate to intimidate Diamond rankers without them ever stepping in. He can control light and gravity and the aura around them once they’re inside… He doesn’t need to be flashy to demonstrate his power, and these guys weren’t monsters coming to get him. They were every-day security guards coming to investigate people missing from their work place, and none of them said or did anything really wrong. Even walking into his portal wasn’t an intrusion, given that he’d left it open in the middle of their office building. Besides, he demonstrated his power against the pirates. Each and every one of those guys already knew who he is.

Chiqui Joy

Shade: “The Australians have finally noticed their missing officials.” … “It just occurred to me,” Sue said, “that we didn’t tell anyone where we went. …. You don’t think that’s going to cause any problems, do you?” LOL 😂

ABTelford

I love this chapter so much! Especially the conversation with gold tanker Lu. It felt like coming full circle somehow and this being a better way forward than anything else before this.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Kristy Riedel

His domains are places in the world that he has consecrated to himself. His astral kingdom is his soul. I don't think anything he doesn't generate will manifest there.
