Do EV Road Trips Still Suck Without a Tesla?

Ah! A good reason to stay awake a bit longer!

Gerrit Immink

As someone who bought an EV6 last week... I'm mildly anxious watching this

agingwheels

I'll spoil it for you. The thing charges incredibly well and the CCS network performed admirably. The only let down of the EV6 is the built in nav, but there's no need to use it unless you it's cold and you need to precondition

Gerrit Immink

BUT MUH SPOILERS lol. I'm at 500 miles and already really happy with it, and since I'm in California, the CCS Network has been pretty solid in my use so far (though two road trips upcoming, so I'm very curious how itll go)

Dan Sweikata

I've noticed the same in the Tesla app when charging my Bolt.

Kenneth Garrett

The Tesla app could actually be starting you at Null Island. There's no actual land there, but its a common default location for maps because the coordinates are 0⁰N, 0⁰E.

agingwheels

I figured that's what's it's doing, but it would be pretty easy for them to make it default to my last location or even the US rather than null island

Sean Feichtenbiner

babe wake up, 40 minute aging wheels video just dropped

Dan Sweikata

Question for Robert: which adaptor are you using? I have the Lectron one and getting the NACS cable off it can be an absolute pain.

agingwheels

I have the A2Z Typhoon. The slide lock is slightly irritating, but it's much lighter than the Typhoon Pro

Graham Burgdorf

Good video. Where you stopped in berry Hill is the old 100 oaks mall lol. You gotta see the theater at night it's pretty cool looking.

Graham Burgdorf

My thought is that it was a joke because the owner is African. Your theory is more practical though.

Big Car

It puts you in Africa because the app defaults to Lat 0, Long 0 before populating with the correct location, but I'm sure you already knew that...

Chris Horry

I hope to get an EV in the next couple of years, this gives me hope that it will be just as easy as owning a gas guzzler.

Nuno Campos

Great video to watch as a Portuguese. We have a solid network, but the confusion of apps does not exist. We have a public network and 2 private ones. The privates are one from the largest supermarket group and they only have chargers on their locations, in private property. The other is Tesla, but they "can't" expand more because the attribition of electrical lines specific to charging stations depends on the chargers to be on the public network. The public network is unique, because everybody can sell energy for any charging station. The fight here is for price, and some companies sell energy very expensive. The price has 3 components: the electricity seller, the owner of the station and the government. Being able to activate any station from any provider is great and makes the access very easy, but it makes the price be very high. And, finally, credit cards are being implemented...

Misha Dellinger

How did you clone yourself and drive two cars at the same time? 🤔

Adam Wishneusky

“Through the magic of buying two of them” borrowed from Alec. Wait was one of them Alec?

The trouble with thicker cables is they are a pain to handle and position to insert into the car. Literally a pain, as I currently have 3 damaged discs in my spine. I can manage it, but it hurts. The one thing that EV charging still lags behind is usability for those who have physical limitations. My 83 year old mother and my friend in a wheelchair will both struggle with 300A cables. Maybe both of them together would manage that NACS cable with the extra handle? Most Petrol / gas stations have an attendant who is happy to assist and the hoses are just much easier to work. Even where we have chargers at gas stations locations, the gas station attendants are usually reluctant to have anything to do with the chargers as they are operated by a different company. If they do help, it's purely out of good will.

Chris K

I put thick cables between my legs and draw them further out, so that the plug goes straight. Not sure if that helps you, but I thought I should let you know. Cheers!

DrumBrakes

Just remembered. Aren't there a couple of states in the US where it's a legal requirement that an attendant pumps your gas? I'm pretty sure Oregon or maybe Washington was one. I'm guessing the laws don't apply to recharging EVs?

Kadah

Weird, my SCv2 station is now open to other brands, but it's the last revision of v2. My friend's friend was caught in the SC Team purge, but was hired back in a higher role by just saying he'd work for them again. Their was internal and leadership issues, it was apparently easier to start over.

agingwheels

Wait, where is this supercharger? I didn't think any V2 were open or even could be opened to non-Teslas. Outside of Europe, that is

Kadah

Tustin California. I see Rivans there often. They have to park backwards and use the pedestal for the adjacent stall due to the v2 cable length and positioning to the side of the stall. Other brands of EVs are extremely uncommon here for some reason. I can't remember what the last non Tesla or Rivans EV I saw was or where.

agingwheels

Just had a look on the map and confirmed that Tustin doesn't have any V2 superchargers. There are four V3 sites including a massive 36 stall V3 site. V3 and V2 are visually nearly identical so I understand the confusion

Kadah

Yeah, I dumbed, it's a v3. I don't actually use it (that massive one), it's just on one of our properties. I know it was one of the last v3 projects completed before the designs and hardware was finalized for v4, and before the purge. I've been trying to find out if they have plans to upgrade at least the pedestals to v4 so the cables can reach Rivan's mirror port position and stop needing to use 2 stalls while charging, or up to 4 as a few have parked that badly some days... I should probably ban them when they parallel park across 3+ stalls, but I'm lazy and it's kinda funny still.

John Jenson

I was thinking with all the changes it might be a good time to bring back a fleet update.
