Don't worry about the 5-speed. The 5th gear starts popping out because of a lubricating flaw. Getting modern tires will improve your handling. The econ-gauge is a vacuum line straight in to the carb. Basically measeures how much the carb is sucking. I know exactly what's wrong with your heater.

Seems so strange to say a Lada is too normal. But for you, maybe that works. Either fix it up to be a daily drive, or sell now and go for weirder.

Polski Fiat! Definitely a Polski Fiat! My cousin had one in the early 2000s. He painted it pink and chopped the roof off. The only bright pink Fiat 126p cabriolet in the country! Unfortunately, they are practically unobtainium in the US.

Citroen GS or CX for me. They may just be the quirkiest cars ever mass produced. The crazy hydraulic suspension and feedback-less self centering DIRAVI steering system are unlike anything else on the road.

For peculiar replacements; ZAZ 968 gets my vote. You want to do something odd with the Lada, why not do a diy fuel injection thing, meqasquirt or speeduino type stuff :P But the 5speed would be good to watch. Regarding the French, it feels like the Citroen BX doesn't get enough love. Any of the ones with the magic suspension

The body shape of your lada is very similar to my 1976 DAF 66 I acquired from the Nederlands, it also has no ac or power steering it also only has 2 out of 6 windows that open an a heater with option of high and low, it also has one of those wonderful belt driven cvt units you love!
