Steinel Ammunition has started making a rather niche new product, but one that I think is quite convenient: .45 ACP downloaded to .455 Webley pressure. This is for use in Webley revolvers that were shaved to use moon clips and .45 ACP when they were imported. This is a common modification done by importers back when proper .455 Webley ammunition was very hard to find; by converting the guns to .45 ACP they became much easier to sell (a similar thing was done with .380 ACP barrels in Husqvarna M1907 9x20 SR pistols). However, standard .45 ACP ammunition is equivalent to .455 Webley proof loads, and it's not safe to shoot it. So historically, the shaved Webley revolvers have been shootable (safely) only for bandleaders. Steinel's new offering gives people a factory-made option that can be safely shot right out of the box.

Disclaimer: Steinel sent me a box of this ammo for free. I'm doing a video because I think it's an excellent thing to have on the market, not because I can be bribed for $39.99 ;)

Shootable only by bandleaders? Wow, that is niche! 😀

Interesting, up to now that’s why I have avoided picking up a Webley with a shaved cylinder because I knew it to be a ticking time bomb possibly

Matthew Long

Lawrence Welk’s favorite revolver…? ;-p

Mrgunsngear

Wild how weak that loading is - it is cool that it's a factory loading now though

I LOVE moonclips. would 45autorim work in a shaved to acp cylinder? man topbreaks are just too cool. wow. 455 has REALLY low(!) preassure, huh. if a acp is warmer...

Guido Schriewer

think a 454 HAS BEEN in combat. once or twice. bet they did the trick very well back then. so... maybe one would use those again.

It seems that a cheap folding table would be a useful and helpful investment.

When I bought mine in 1963, there were no such thing as full moon clips. Mine came with four M1917 half moon clips. As I recall, all for 27 dollars.

ViejoLobo

Yes. Half moons only back then, although undoubtedly someone welded a couple together just 'cause.

Kudos to Steinel for filling yet another niche. Somewhere I have a box or two of .45 AR. Still manufactured, as is the brass. Why not .45 Auto Rim, suitably downloaded? You might even be able to use speedloaders--not quite as fast as a moon clip, but what's the hurry in shooting a century-old topbreak?

Shooting a Webley is still on my Bucket List. 🪣💥🔫🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Episode title made me pause to think...
