Aly & Kaufman AKB-23: Better Than the SA80 / L85 (Ad-free)

Penguin Brutality t-shirt available from Varusteleka: https://varusteleka.com/en/products/forgotten-weapons-penguin-brutality-t-shirt The Aly & Kaufman AKB-23 is a set of parts that allows one to use a Brownells BRN-180 upper to create an SA80 / L85 lookalike. It's a very clever adaptation, based on the fact that the original British L85A1 was essentially copied from the AR-180 design. By creating a new bullpup lower for Brownells' modernized AR-180 (the BRN-180), the basic mechanics of the SA80 are used, but in a form that is well tested and reliable. The parts include, of course, the new lower (which is legally a firearm, and required FFL transfer). The lower is milled aluminum, and uses standard AR fire control parts. It also includes iron sights that mount onto the BRN-180 picatinny rail and a high quality printed cheek rest and front handguard. This is a really fun rifle, and a very clever way to create an L85 analog that is affordable and accessible. If I lived in the US I would buy this immediately 😁

This is on my list (its a long expensive list) of guns to get. There must be surplus SUSATs given how long they had been in service or am I wrong? L1A1 SUIT scopes came in by a boatload in the 90s.

could even be lighter than the original using the brownells. furniture may be better, too. NOT a gazillion screws as so many conversions. NICE. well done! I actually do like the looks of the 85 irons but who ever really used those. ar grip looked off but could feel fine on that. can see that they would sell those like sliced bread stateside.

hey if they do a 1 to 1 repro of that they can start doing famas TOO! jimo. bet ya they wold sell both if any affordable price on it. the conversion will sell better than the repro giving the lack in price tag most likely, I reckon.

I looked up the Murdock L85, and since it costs 10 times as much as this gun, yeah I'm good

Ian, how was the trigger compared to most bullpups? I didn't hear any comment about it. If I missed it I'm sorry. :)

Ian, when you threw the British desert camo shirt on the gun, that made the video for me! I was one of the first to buy the kit, and I was grinning ear-to-ear when I finished it. I also bought one of the Murdoch flash hiders. Now, I need that updated pistol grip and a bayonet.

I just wish we could get an L86 handguard and a 20" barrel to make an LSW!
